During this half term, the children will be looking at keeping safe and healthy. They will discuss how to maintain a healthy lifestyle by eating the correct food and exercising regularly. They will also look at mental health and keeping their minds healthy. The children will discuss peer pressure and identify the best resolutions when faced with challenging scenarios.

English: This half term, we will immerse ourselves in the art of composing formal letters. Our journey will intertwine with our captivating new topic on the Victorians, as we write a letter to Queen Victoria to extend our heartfelt congratulations on her impending diamond coronation. Following this, students will engage in crafting a balanced argument surrounding the thought-provoking question: "Should Victorian children have been sent to work?" Meanwhile, we will be using 'Street Child' by Berlie Doherty as a vehicle to drive the learning in our lessons.

Year 5 – Autumn 2

Maths:

During our Maths lessons this half-term, the children will start by furthering their understanding of multiplication and division. Within this topic, the children will be exploring the concept of: multiples, factors, prime numbers, square & cube numbers and practise multiplying/dividing by 10, 100 and 1,000! The children will then begin to look at equivalent and improper fractions, before attempting to order, compare and convert!

Science:

This half term we will begin our new Science topic, 'Properties and Changes of Materials'. We will be investigating and experimenting with different materials and compare their properties. The children will learn that some materials will dissolve in liquid to form a solution and they will be able to describe how to recover a substance from it. We will be conducting exciting science experiments investigating questions such as, ‘What material makes the best thermal insulator?’ They will be working as scientists exploring how mixtures might be separated through filtering, sieving and evaporating.

In RE we will be discussing big questions such as 'What is a place of worship and what is it for? We will be looking from the Christian, Jewish and Hindu point of view. We will also be questioning 'Are people more important than the place? What does a place of worship mean to believers?'

PE:

In P.E this half term, the children will be doing gymnastics with the WLSP coaches. All children in Year 5 will also be doing athletics and will continue to visit Tarleton Academy for more of their swimming lessons. The children will be building up to swimming 25m on their front and backs over the course of the sessions.

Music:

The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air

This half terms key element of music is tempo. During this half term our unit is based around the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air and we will move on to glockenspiels and recap stave notation. We will learn how to rap, analyse lyrics, improvise and play simple melodies on the keyboards. We will also be rehearsing for our carol concert in St. Cuthbert's Church.

Year 5 – Autumn 2

D.T: In D.T, the children are going to be studying various mechanical systems (such as levers) and producing their own pop-up books. They will be responsible for designing, writing and illustrating their children's book and they will follow the story of Raymond Briggs' 'The Snowman'.

Spanish: Mi familia / My family: With Senor Asensi, the children will:

• Remember the nouns for family members in Spanish from memory.

• Describe our own or a fictitious family in Spanish by name, age and relationship.

• Understand possessive adjectives better in Spanish (‘my’ form only).

History:

Throughout this half term in History, the children will embark on an immersive journey into the Victorian era, diving into the compelling question: "How did life change for children in Victorian Britain?"

Through meticulous analysis of historical sources, they will cultivate their critical thinking skills, forming their own insightful opinions and conclusions. They will partake in an engaging Victorian-themed day, offering a first-hand glimpse into the experiences of impoverished children during that era, with a focus on schools, slums, and workhouses.
