Maths:

To start Year 5, the children will be exploring numbers up to 1,000,000. Children will learn to read, write, compare, order and partition these much larger numbers! We will then recap the written methods for addition and subtraction and apply our skills to a larger number range, before delving into the realms of multiples, factors, prime numbers, square numbers and cube numbers before October half-term.

Year 5 – Autumn 1 ‘Malamander'

Science:

This half-term, our topic is ‘Forces’. The children will learn about the concept of gravity and how it acts a force between the Earth and falling objects. After that, the children will identify the effects of air resistance, water resistance and friction, that act between moving surfaces. We will also be learning about key scientists, such as Isaac Newton and how he developed the theory of gravitation.

PSHE:

PSHE: During this half term in

PSHE, the children will be learning about the difference between a fixed mindset and a growth mindset. They will also be exploring feelings and emotions.

Art:

In this collection of lessons, the children will learn and develop their skills in: design, drawing, craft, painting and art appreciation. They will be designing their own invention, expanding on an observational drawing and using a poem to create a portrait! They will paint an enlarged section of a drawn collage and learn to ‘think’ like an artist.

English: We will be using the quality text, 'Malamander' by Thomas Taylor to immerse ourselves in the characters and plot. We will write letters, create a 'missing' chapter and invent a character that would fit into the genre. Our grammar will include using hyphens, commas in lists and to avoid ambiguity, relative clauses and including speech in our writing.

PE: In P.E this half term, the children will be having lessons in swimming or gymnastics.

RE:

In RE we will be exploring the question 'Why do some people believe God exists?.' We will define the terms theist, atheist and agnostic and outline a Christian, Muslim and Jewish understanding of what God is like. We will present different views on why people believe in God or not.

Music:

In Music this half term our focus element of Music is pitch. The unit is called Livin’ on a Prayer and is based on the song by Jon Bon Jovi. We will be singing the song, playing the keyboards, composing, improvising and exploring music from the 1980’s.

Geography: In Geography, we will be exploring the significance of our oceans, children learn how humans use and impact them and how this has changed over time. Pupils study the Great Barrier Reef and how plastic and pollution is damaging this marine environment, before considering positive environmental changes that can be made including making eco-friendly choices. They use fieldwork skills to investigate the amount and type of litter in their nearest marine environment.

Spanish: Me presento / Presenting Myself:

• Revisit basic greetings, ask somebody how they are feeling and their name in Spanish and reply when asked.

• Recall numbers 1-31 in Spanish.

• Ask somebody how old they are and where they live in Spanish and reply when asked.

• Express our nationalities in Spanish understanding gender agreement rules.

Computing:

During this half term, our topic is Online Safety. We will understand how apps can access our personal information and how to alter the permissions. We will learn to be aware of the positive and negative aspects of online communication and understand how online information can be used to form judgements. We will discover ways to overcome bullying and understand how technology can affect health and wellbeing.
