English: During this half term, our quality text will be ‘Flotsam’. We will develop our comprehension skills of prediction and inference through the use of pictures. Our grammar focus will be using fronted adverbials to begin sentences and using subordinating and coordinating conjunctions to expand our ideas. We will complete some short writing activities such as postcard and letter writing and build up to writing the opening of a story.

Year 3 Half-term:

Autumn 1

Science: In our Science lessons, we will complete our unit of work on Rocks. We will compare and group different rocks according to their appearance and properties. We will also be looking about how fossils are formed.

Whole class reading: In our reading lessons, we will be reading a range of fiction, non-fiction and poetry texts linked to our history and science topics. We will be focusing on retrieval and inference skills and building our knowledge of vocabulary.

Maths: In maths this half term, we will be working on Place Value and Addition & Subtraction. The children will be working on identifying, representing and estimating numbers using different manipulatives. They will learn about each place and its value (H,T,O) and count in multiples of 4, 8, 50 and 100. They will find 1, 10 or 100 more than numbers also. In Addition & Subtraction we will work up from adding and subtracting 1, 10 and 100 up to 3-digit addition and subtraction questions.

PE: Working each week with WLSP, the children will take part in gymnastics. Teachers will be teaching athletics.

Music: The focus element this half term is Pitch. In this unit the children will explore their voices, compose music for the glockenspiel and learn to play a simple song.

Year 3 Half-term: Autumn 1

Spanish: This half term in Y3 Spanish we will cover the following:

Greetings in Spanish / Los saludos en español:

• Say ‘hello’ (formally and informally) in Spanish

• Say ‘my name is…’ in Spanish.

• Ask somebody in Spanish how they are feeling and give a reply.

• Say ‘goodbye’ and ‘see you soon’ in Spanish

Geography: We will learn that the Earth is constructed in layers, and the crust is divided into tectonic plates. We will then study the formation and distribution of mountains, volcanoes and earthquakes and use Mount Etna to identify how human interaction shapes a volcanic landscape.

Computing: This term we will be programming using 'Scratch' and making sure that we can sequence commands to create a simple game.

RE: In R.E we will be studying what Christians, Muslims and Hindus believe about God. We will learn about the similarities and differences between ideas about God.

History: This part of the curriculum will be covered in Autumn 2

PSHE: In P.S.H.E, will are focusing on feelings and emotions and we will be examining healthy and unhealthy anger.

DT: This part of the curriculum will be covered in Autumn 2

Art: In our Art lessons, we will be studying the formal elements of art including shading and toning. We will work towards creating our own botanical inspired artwork.
