Maths:

Place Value:

• To know the value of digits to 10,000,000.

• To read and write numbers up 10,000,000.

• To compare and order any integers.

• To round any integer.

• Looking at negative numbers.

Written Calculations:

• To be able to use a written method for addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.

• To solve multi-step problems using addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.

English: This half term we will be reading 'War Horse' by Michael Morpurgo. Our writing will be based on the text and will conclude with the children composing their own animal adventure story. In grammar and sentence work we will begin by ensuring children can create well-structured sentences.

We will move on to using conjunctions correctly in sentences, the use of adverbials and understanding grammatical terms.

Multiplication:

• To be able to identify factors, multiples and prime numbers.

• To have a knowledge of square and cube numbers.

• To know the rules of divisibility.

Year 6 Autumn 1: ‘The Great War’

RE: In RE we will be exploring the question 'What matters most to Christians and Humanists? We will explore what makes the world a better place, what is a Humanist and we will consider the theme of peace.

Science: In Science, we will be studying the topic of electricity including learning about electrical components, how to make simple circuits, the history of electricity and we will carry out a scientific investigation into the brightness of bulbs.

Reading: The children will work on their retrieval skills, understanding vocabulary and phrases, how to infer from the text and how to use evidence to support inferences. They will read a wide range of texts and extracts across different themes.

Art and Design: Make my voice heard Children will create their own graffiti tag, explore the work of Kathe Kollwitz and Pablo Picasso and create their own clay sculpture based off their own drawings.

History: This half term we will be learning about The Great War. We will examine the events that led to the outbreak of war, the use of propaganda and what life was like in the trenches for soldiers. The unit ends by learning about how the war came to an end and the Treaty of Versailles.

PSHE: Our topic for this half term is 'Feelings and Emotions' with a focus on 'Worry'. We will explore what emotions are, identify how we can reduce our feeling of worry, learn how to support others, and recognise that our actions affect others.

Spanish: Presenting Myself (recap unit):

• Count up to 100 in Spanish.

Music: The children will learn all about complex rhythms using Djembe drumming. They will also be rehearsing for the Harvest Festival Celebration at St Cuthbert's Church.

Computing: This half term our focus is online safety. We will spend time thinking about the impact and consequences of sharing online and explore strategies that will help to keep us protected online.

• Ask somebody how they are feeling, their age, name and where they live in Spanish.

• Say how we are feeling, how old we are, what our name is and where we live in Spanish.

• Revisit rules of adjectival agreement when saying our nationality in Spanish.

PE: In PE we will develop skills in invasion games and athletics. We will also swim for 5 weeks during this half term.
