Maths: This half term we will be delving into the topic of Shape. We will measure, compare, order, draw and calculate angles in degrees. We will be exploring reasoning problems about triangles, quadrilaterals and 3-D shapes. We will be describing the position and translation on a grid and finally plotting and carrying out translation with coordinates. Our final unit for this half term, will continue back to our learning journey with decimals, reinforcing and deepening our understanding. We will delve into the intricacies of adding and subtracting decimals, honing our skills and exploring the most effective strategies to tackle both fluency and reasoning questions with confidence and precision.

Year 5 – Summer 1

‘Vile Victorians’

History: Throughout this half term in History, the children will embark on an immersive journey into the Victorian era, diving into the compelling question: "How did life change for children in Victorian Britain?" Through meticulous analysis of historical sources, they will cultivate their critical thinking skills, forming their own insightful opinions and conclusions. They will partake in an engaging Victorian-themed day, offering a first-hand glimpse into the experiences of impoverished children during that era, with a focus on schools, slums, and workhouses.

English: This half term, we will immerse ourselves in the art of composing formal letters. Our journey will intertwine with our captivating new topic on the Victorians, as we write a letter to Queen Victoria to extend our heartfelt congratulations on her impending diamond coronation. Following this, students will engage in crafting a balanced argument surrounding the thought-provoking question: "Should Victorian children have been sent to work?" Meanwhile, during our reading sessions, we will delve into a diverse array of extracts from various Charles Dickens texts, delving deep into the rich tapestry of Victorian literature.

Computing: In the ICT suite, students will leverage their coding prowess to craft a unique musical composition. With the innovative app 'Sonic Pi', they will blend a diverse array of musical structures, showcasing their creativity and technical skills.

R.E: In R.E, we ask the question 'What would Jesus do?' and encourage children to think about the messages from the bible, but to also question whether we can, or should live by the values of Jesus in the 21st century.

PE: Throughout their PE sessions this half term, the children will engage in a dynamic mix of activities. They will alternate between invigorating sessions of Outdoor Adventurous Activities (OAA) and skilful Striking and Fielding sessions led by the WLSP coaches alongside their class teacher.

Spanish: With Señor Asensi, the children will be exploring the different vocabulary for common, everyday pets. They will learn to say what pets they do/don’t have and give the name for any pets they own. The children will then practise asking others what pets they have at home.

PSHE: In PSHE, the children will be discussing 'The Working World’. The module supports their understanding of the world around them. They will gain an understanding of how they can contribute to their communities now and in the future.

Students will explore many areas including enterprise skills, budgeting, and price comparisons.

D.T: Our next topic in DT, will involve the children making their very own stuffed toy! They will design, make an appropriate template, then sew their own toy using blanket stitch followed by decorative applique. They will then evaluate their piece highlighting what worked well and areas for improvement.

Year 5 – Summer 1

‘Vile Victorians’

Music: In Music, the children be exploring the ‘Seven Songs of Summer’ before exploring pitch, duration, texture and timbre on a recorder!

Science: During Summer 1, the children will explore the differences in the life cycles of a mammal, an amphibian, an insect and a bird, before exploring the human life cycle and begin to describe the life process of reproduction! We will maintain our captivating observational study of our caterpillars, meticulously documenting and investigating the remarkable transformation into butterflies. This enriching topic builds upon the children's prior learning from last term, inspired by the renowned naturalists and animal behaviourists, David Attenborough and Jane Goodall.

Maths: In Maths, we're embarking on an exciting journey with our unit, 'Decimals and Percentages.' Building upon the foundation laid in Year 4, students will refine their skills by ordering, comparing, and rounding decimals. We'll then transition into exploring percentages, understanding them as both fractions and decimals. We will then delve into perimeter and area, covering rectangles, rectilinear shapes, polygons, and compound shapes. Our term will culminate with a focus on Statistics, where students will master drawing and reading line graphs, along with interpreting tables and timetables.

Year 5 – Spring 2 ‘A Greek Odyssey!’

Science: In Spring 2, we'll kick off the term by delving deeper into our topic, 'Properties of Materials.' Our focus will be on investigating reversible and irreversible changes, paving the way for an exciting experiment on thermal insulators. Get ready for hands-on exploration and scientific inquiry! Later in the term, the children will explore the differences in the life cycles of a mammal, an amphibian, an insect and a bird, before exploring the human life cycle and begin to describe the life process of reproduction!.

English: Over the next six weeks, the children will attempt to write their own Greek Myth, before composing a biography about the life and work of David Attenborough! There will be a particular focus in our SPAG lessons on how/when to use a comma when writing fronted adverbials, relative clauses and using commas correctly in a list. The children will continue to read a variety of different Greek Myths in their Whole Class Reading lessons, whilst enjoying listening to a range of class texts too.

History: Once again the children will delve into the realms of ‘Ancient Greece,’ where they will begin to investigate what impact Ancient Greeks have had on society today, while exploring how significant their legacy is. They will explore Greek architecture, art & theatre, before exploring where the Olympics originated from. The children will research ‘Archimedes’ and how his work/research has influenced life as we know it.

Art: During our Art lessons, the children will investigate the ‘built environment’ through drawing and printmaking, learning about the work of architect Zaha Hadid, creatively presenting research on artist Hundertwasser and exploring the symbolism of monument design.

Computing: In the ICT suite, the children will apply their understanding of coding, to create a piece of music, which combines a variety of structures, using the app ‘Sonic Pi’!

Music:

During Mr Pritchard’s Music lessons, the children will be learning how to play the ukulele. They will learn simple songs and our focus will be on chords, strumming patterns and dynamics

PE: This half term, we will be continuing our teacher-led lessons of invasion games, developing their understanding of both attacking, defending principles and working as a team. The children will also be taking part in OAA (Outdoor, adventurous activities), which encourages children to draw upon mental, as well as physical skills, including leadership, critical thinking, and problemsolving.

Year 5 – Spring 2 ‘A Greek Odyssey!’

PSHE: During SRE week (w/ 18th March), the children are taught about the physical, emotional and social changes at puberty, which includes personal hygiene. They are able to identify why our bodies go through puberty, develop coping strategies to help with the different stages and identify who and what can help them during this time. More information regarding this week, will be communicated nearer the time!

Geography: To tie in with our ‘Ancient Greece’ topic in History, we thought it be only fair to explore Greece, as we know it today! The children will begin to investigate the physical and human features of Greece, including climate, economic activity, tourism and Greek culture (e.g. foods/hobbies). The children will have the opportunity to sample some of the more common Greek delicacies during the topic!

Spanish: With Señor Asensi, the children will practise ordering a selection of foods, drinks and snacks from a Spanish menu, before role playing the ‘real life’ scenario in the setting of a café. It is here where children will also be able to practise common phrases learnt earlier in the year. E.g hello, thank you & good bye!

Maths:

The children will start the Spring term with multiplying and dividing 3 & 4 digit numbers, by a 2-digit number (2345 x 56) using the strategies they are familiar with. They will move onto problem solving with multiplication before working on division methods. This will include short division and dividing a 4-digit number by a onedigit number. After problem solving using division, we will then move onto fractions (AGAIN!) This will involve multiplication and finding fractions of amounts.

Spanish: With Señor Asensi, the children will be learning about 'El tiempo' (the weather). They will recognise and recall weather expressions. In addition, the children will learn how to ask what the weather is today and give a reply in Spanish. They will learn about the weather in Spain, including using a weather map with symbols.

Year 5 – Spring 1

‘A Greek Odyssey’

English:

During this half term, the children will be reading a range of Ancient Greek myths and legends. They will be exploring the features of persuasive texts and writing their own persuasive texts linked to the Ancient Greeks. They will have the opportunity to write independently, applying their knowledge from the year so far. The children will be learning how to use causal conjunctions, apostrophes for possession, subjunctive verbs and colons to link related clauses.

History:

For our first History topic of Year 5, the children will be learning all about Ancient Greece! During Spring 1, the children will be exploring the civilisation of the Ancient Greeks. They will compare similarities and differences between Athens and Sparta, before learning about the famous wars and battles of the time. Tied in with our reading, the children will learn all about the Greek Gods!

RE: During this half term, the children will be unpicking what it means to be a Muslim in Britain today. They will explore the religion in detail and understand what it is like to live as part of that faith. The children will continue to develop their knowledge of other faiths and cultures alongside this question.

PE: This half term, we will have a specialist WLSP coach who will lead our children in dance. Children will move and dance within a formation. They will describe what unison is and dance within unison. Children will also identify street dance movements in relation to other dance styles. Teacher led sessions will be invasion games.

Year 5 – Spring 1

‘A Greek Odyssey!’

Art: This half term, we will be starting our new topic: Painting and mixed media, focusing on portraits. The children will investigate self-portraits by a range of artists, they will use photographs of themselves as a starting point for developing their own unique self-portraits in mixedmedia.

PSHE: This half term, the children will be recognising the importance of being responsible and looking out for others. They will recognise why they should take action when someone is being unkind and describe caring and considerate behaviour. They will also identify how making some choices can impact others’ lives in a positive or negative way.

Music: Alongside learning Chinese New Year songs on the guitar, the children will be preparing for the Young Voices concert at the beginning of February.

Science:

This half term we will begin our new Science topic, 'Properties and Changes of Materials'. We will be investigating and experimenting with different materials and compare their properties. The children will learn that some materials will dissolve in liquid to form a solution and they will be able to describe how to recover a substance from it. We will be conducting exciting science experiments investigating questions such as, ‘What material makes the best thermal insulator?’ They will be working as scientists exploring how mixtures might be separated through filtering, sieving and evaporating.

Maths:

During our Maths lessons this half-term, the children will start by furthering their understanding of multiplication and division. Within this topic, the children will be exploring the concept of: multiples, factors, prime numbers, square & cube numbers and practise multiplying/dividing by 10, 100 and 1,000! The children will then begin to look at equivalent and improper fractions, before attempting to order, compare and convert!

Science:

In Science this half term we will be starting our new topic Earth and Space. We will be learning all about spherical bodies, the movement of the moon and features of the planets. We will learn all about the famous Galileo Galilei, work scientifically pattern seeking and then investigate day and night.

Year 5 – Autumn 2 ‘Blast Off!’

PSHE:

English:

This half term, we will be using a quality text called, 'Where Once We Stood'. It is all about the moon landings between 1969 and 1972. From this, they will produce a number of pieces of writing, including: an exploration narrative, a formal report, some poetry, a setting description, a character study and some short dialogue. We will also be including all of the elements of grammar that are required in Year 5. A focus on spelling and handwriting will also be included in our English provision.

During this half term, the children will be looking at keeping safe and healthy. They will discuss how to maintain a healthy lifestyle by eating the correct food and exercising regularly. They will also look at mental health and keeping their minds healthy. The children will discuss peer pressure and identify the best resolutions when faced with challenging scenarios.

RE: In RE we will be discussing big questions such as 'What is a place of worship and what is it for? We will be looking from the Christian, Jewish and Hindu point of view. We will also be questioning 'Are people more important than the place? What does a place of worship mean to believers?'

Spanish:

With Señor Asensi, the children will be learning to count up to 50, before learning the names for different family members. The children will then begin to describe their relatives age, relationship and appearance.

Year 5 – Autumn 2

‘Blast Off!’

PE:

In P.E this half term, the children will swap WLSP coaches. We will be doing gymnastics. All children in Year 5 will continue to visit Tarleton Academy for 2 more of their swimming lessons. The children will be building up to swimming 25m on their front and backs over the course of the sessions.

D.T: In D.T, the children are going to be studying various mechanical systems (such as levers) and producing their own pop-up books. They will be responsible for designing, writing and illustrating their children's book and they will follow the story of Raymond Briggs' 'The Snowman'.

Music:

During Autumn 2, the children will be preparing for not only the Young Voices concert in February, but preparations will be well underway for our spectacular Carol Concert at St Cuthbert's Church on December 15th!

Computing:

In Computing this half herm, pupils will begin their new topic Data handling: Mars Rover. They will be researching and calculating the distance from Earth to Mars and will explain how the Mars Rover transmits the data back to Earth. They will identify input, processing and output on the Mars Rovers. Read binary numbers and grasp the concept of binary addition. We will Relate binary signals (Boolean) to a simple character-based language, ASCII.

Maths:

To start Year 5, the children will be exploring numbers up to 1,000,000. Children will learn to read, write, compare, order and partition these much larger numbers! We will then recap the written methods for addition and subtraction and apply our skills to a larger number range, before delving into the realms of multiples, factors, prime numbers, square numbers and cube numbers before October half-term.

Year 5 – Autumn 1

‘All Aboard the Hogwarts Express’

Science:

This half-term, our topic is ‘Forces’. The children will learn about the concept of gravity and how it acts a force between the Earth and falling objects. After that, the children will identify the effects of air resistance, water resistance and friction, that act between moving surfaces. We will also be learning about key scientists, such as Isaac Newton and how he developed the theory of gravitation.

Art:

In this collection of lessons, the children will learn and develop their skills in: design, drawing, craft, painting and art appreciation. They will be designing their own invention, expanding on an observational drawing and using a poem to create a portrait! They will paint an enlarged section of a drawn collage and learn to ‘think’ like an artist.

English: Our genre for this half term is instructional writing. We will be identifying the features of an instructional text and then applying our knowledge when writing a range of texts including instructions to make a magical potion and instructions for how to care for a magical creature. Our grammar lessons will focus on conjunctions and fronted adverbials. In addition, we will explore how to use colons and semicolons as well as punctuation for parenthesis.

PE: In P.E this half term, the children will be having lessons in athletics or invasion games.

RE:

In RE we will be exploring the question 'Why do some people believe God exists?.' We will define the terms theist, atheist and agnostic and outline a Christian, Muslim and Jewish understanding of what God is like. We will present different views on why people believe in God or not.

Geography: In Geography, we will be using the 8 points of a compass and using 4 and 6-figure grid references. The children will be using symbols and keys on a map to build their knowledge of the U.K.

Year 5 – Autumn 1

‘All Aboard the Hogwarts Express’

Music:

During this half term, we will be rehearsing our songs to perform in the harvest festival celebration in St. Cuthbert's Church. In addition, we will be learning and practising our songs in preparation for our 'Young Voices' concert.

Spanish: This half term's Spanish unit is Presenting Myself / Me presento. We will learn to count up to 50 in Spanish. We will also ask somebody how they are feeling, their age, name and where they live. In addition, we will learn how to say how we are feeling, how old we are, what our name is and where we live. We will apply rules of adjectival agreement when saying our nationality.

Computing:

During this half term, our topic is Online Safety. We will understand how apps can access our personal information and how to alter the permissions. We will learn to be aware of the positive and negative aspects of online communication and understand how online information can be used to form judgements. We will discover ways to overcome bullying and understand how technology can affect health and wellbeing.

PSHE:

PSHE: During this half term in PSHE, the children will be learning about the difference between a fixed mindset and a growth mindset. They will also be exploring feelings and emotions.
