Year 5 Summer Curriculum 2023

Maths: This half term we will be consolidating our learning around decimal numbers and looking at the Year 5 geometry objectives.

Number- Decimals: • Multiplying and dividing decimals by 10, 100 and 1,000 Geometry- Properties of Shape: • Measure, compare, order, draw and calculate angles in degrees.

• Reasoning about triangles, quadrilaterals and 3-D shapes.

• Describing position and translation on a grid.

• Plotting and carrying out translation with coordinates.

Computing: In the ICT suite, the children will apply their understanding of coding, to create a piece of music, which combines a variety of structures, using the app ‘Sonic Pi’!

Year 5 – Summer 1 ‘Vile Victorians’

English: When the children return after Easter, they will be exploring the features within writing a formal letter. They will look at writing in the 1st person, using rhetorical questions and formal tone. We will then put these skills to practise, writing a letter to King Charles to congratulate on his upcoming coronation. To tie in with our Victorian topic, the children will explore extracts from different a variety of Charles Dickens texts.

History: During this half term in History, the children will be delving into the Victorian era and investigating the question, 'How did life change for children in Victorian Britain?' They will be exploring historical sources and drawing their own opinions and conclusions. The children will take part in a fantastic Victorian day introducing them to life as a poor child in Victorian times, focusing on schools, slums and workhouses!

R.E: In R.E, we ask the question 'What would Jesus do?' and encourage children to think about the messages from the bible, but to also question whether we can, or should live by the values of Jesus in the 21st century.

PE: During their PE lessons this halfterm, the children will either be completing a series of Dance or OAA (Outdoor Adventurous Activities) sessions with both the WLSP coaches and their class teacher.

Spanish: With Señor Asensi, the children will be exploring the different vocabulary for common, everyday pets. They will learn to say what pets they do/don’t have and give the name for any pets they own. The children will then practise asking others what pets they have at home.

PSHE: In PSHE, the children will be discussing 'The Working World’.

The module supports their understanding of the world around them. They will gain an understanding of how they can contribute to their communities now and in the future.

Students will explore many areas including enterprise skills, budgeting, and price comparisons.

Year 5 – Summer 1 ‘Vile Victorians’

D.T: Our next topic in DT, will involve the children making their very own stuffed toy! They will design, make an appropriate template, then sew their own toy using blanket stitch followed by decorative applique.

They will then evaluate their piece highlighting what worked well and areas for improvement.

Music: In Music, the children be exploring the ‘Seven Songs of Summer’ before exploring pitch, duration, texture and timbre on a recorder!

Science: In Science, the children will be exploring 'Properties of Materials'. They will compare and group together everyday materials based on their properties, such as hardness and solubility. The children will discover that some materials will dissolve in liquid to form a solution and they will learn how to recover a substance from a solution. Using their knowledge of solids, liquids and gases, they will decide how mixtures might be separated, including through filtering, sieving and evaporating.

In addition, they will explore whether changes are reversible or irreversible.

Maths: The children kick-start the half term by continuing to practise long multiplication and using the ‘bus stop’ method to divide 4-digit numbers, by a 1digit number. Once they have mastered multiplication and division, the children will learn how to multiply unit/non-unit fractions and mixed numbers, before finding the fraction of an amount and quantity. Towards the end of the halfterm, the children will explore the topic of ‘Statistics’. Here they will practise drawing and reading line graphs, while practising interpreting tables/timetables.

Year 5 – Spring 2 ‘A Greek Odyssey!’

Science: During Spring 2, the children will explore the differences in the life cycles of a mammal, an amphibian, an insect and a bird, before exploring the human life cycle and begin to describe the life process of reproduction! Throughout the topic, the children will research the work of naturalists and animal behaviourists e.g. David Attenborough and Jane Goodall.

English: Over the next six weeks, the children will attempt to write their own Greek Myth, before composing a biography about the life and work of David Attenborough! There will be a particular focus in our SPAG lessons on how/when to use a comma when writing fronted adverbials, relative clauses and using commas correctly in a list. The children will continue to read a variety of different Greek Myths in their Whole Class Reading lessons, whilst enjoying ‘Who Let the God’s Out’ for their Class Novel.

History: Once again the children will delve into the realms of ‘Ancient Greece,’ where they will begin to investigate what impact Ancient Greeks have had on society today, while exploring how significant their legacy is. They will explore Greek architecture, art & theatre, before exploring where the Olympics originated from. The children will research ‘Archimedes’ and how his work/research has influenced life as we know.

Art: During our Art lessons, the children will investigate the ‘built environment’ through drawing and printmaking, learning about the work of architect Zaha Hadid, creatively presenting research on artist Hundertwasser and exploring the symbolism of monument design.

Music: During Mr Pritchard’s Music lessons, the children will be learning how to play the ukulele. They will learn simple songs, before performing them to small audiences.

Year 5 – Spring 2 ‘A Greek Odyssey!’

Geography: To tie in with our ‘Ancient Greece’ topic in History, we thought it be only fair to explore Greece, as we know it today! The children will begin to investigate the physical and human features of Greece, including climate, economic activity, tourism and Greek culture (e.g. foods/hobbies). The children will have the opportunity to sample some of the more common Greek delicacies during the topic!

PSHE: During SRE week (w/b 27th March), the children are taught about the physical, emotional and social changes at puberty, which includes personal hygiene. They are able to identify why our bodies go through puberty, develop coping strategies to help with the different stages and identify who and what can help them during this time.

More information regarding this week, will be communicated nearer the time!

Spanish: With Señor Asensi, the children will practise ordering a selection of foods, drinks and snacks from a Spanish menu, before role playing the ‘real life’ scenario in the setting of a café. It is here where children will also be able to practise common phrases learnt earlier in the year. e.g hello, thank you & good bye!

PE: This half term, two classes will be having gymnastics lessons, while the other two will be striking and fielding. During gymnastics, the children will demonstrate various positions and shapes while safely showing fluency and good extension.

During striking and fielding, focussing on methods of travel and reacting quickly.

Maths: The children will start the Spring term, as they ended the Autumn term – exploring Fractions! The children will practise adding and subtracting fractions greater and less than one, before beginning to multiply and divide different unit and nonunit fractions. After Fractions, the children will practise multiplying and dividing 3 & 4 digit numbers, by a 2-digit number (2345 x 56) using the strategies they are familiar with.

Spanish: With Señor Asensi, the children will be learning about 'El tiempo' (the weather). They will recognise and recall weather expressions. In addition, the children will learn how to ask what the weather is today and give a reply in Spanish. They will learn about the weather in Spain, including using a weather map with symbols.

Year 5 – Spring 1 ‘A Greek Odyssey’

English: During this half term, the children will be reading a range of Ancient Greek myths and legends. They will be exploring the features of persuasive texts and writing their own persuasive text linked to the Ancient Greeks. In addition, the children will be producing their own descriptive writing in the form of character and setting descriptions linked to Ancient Greece. The children will be learning how to use causal conjunctions and colons to link related clauses.

History: For our first History topic of Year 5, the children will be learning all about Ancient Greece! During Spring 1, the children will be exploring the civilisation of the Ancient Greeks. They will compare similarities and differences between Athens and Sparta, before learning about the famous wars and battles of the time. Tied in with our reading, the children will learn all about the Greek Gods!

RE: During this half term, the children will be unpicking what it means to be a Muslim in Britain today. They will explore the religion in detail and understand what it is like to live as part of that faith. The children will continue to develop their knowledge of other faiths and cultures alongside this question.

Art: This half term, we will be starting our new topic: Painting and mixed media, focusing on portraits. The children will investigate self-portraits by a range of artists, they will use photographs of themselves as a starting point for developing their own unique self-portraits in mixedmedia.

PE: This half term, two classes will be having gymnastics lessons, while the other two will be striking and fielding.

Year 5 – Autumn 2 ‘A Greek Odyssey!’

PSHE: This half term, the children will be recognising the importance of being responsible and looking out for others.

They will recognise why they should take action when someone is being unkind and describe caring and considerate behaviour. They will also identify how making some choices can impact others’ lives in a positive or negative way.

Music: Alongside learning Chinese New Year songs on the guitar, the children will be preparing for the Young Voices concert at the end of January.

Science: This half term we will be continuing our Space and Earth topic and revisiting some of the fascinating facts we have discovered over the last few weeks. We will then start our new Science topic 'Properties of Materials'.

We will be investigating and experimenting with different materials and comparing their properties. We will be conducting exciting science experiments investigating questions such as, 'How does a dish of saltwater change over time and how does temperature of water affect how long it takes for sugar to dissolve.

Maths: To start Year 5, the children will be exploring numbers up to 1,000,000.

Children will learn to read, write, compare, order and partition these much larger numbers! We will then recap the written methods for addition and subtraction and apply our skills to a larger number range, before delving into the realms of multiples, factors, prime numbers, square numbers and cube numbers before October half-term.

Science: This half-term, our topic is ‘Forces’. The children will learn about the concept of gravity and how it acts a force between the Earth and falling objects.

After that, the children will identify the effects of air resistance, water resistance and friction, that act between moving surfaces. We will also be learning about key scientists, such as Isaac Newton and how he developed the theory of gravitation.

Year 5 – Autumn 1 ‘All Aboard the Hogwarts Express’

Art: In this collection of lessons, the children will learn and develop their skills in: design, drawing, craft, painting and art appreciation. They will be designing their own invention, expanding on an observational drawing and using a poem to create a portrait! They will paint an enlarged section of a drawn collage and learn to ‘think’ like an artist.

English: Our genre for this half term is instructional writing. We will be identifying the features of an instructional text and then applying our knowledge when writing a range of texts including instructions to make a magical potion and instructions for how to care for a magical creature. Our grammar lessons will focus on conjunctions and fronted adverbials. In addition, we will explore how to use colons and semicolons as well as punctuation for parenthesis.

PE: In P.E this half term, the children will be having lessons in athletics or invasion games.

RE: In RE we will be exploring the question 'Why do some people believe God exists?.' We will define the terms theist, atheist and agnostic and outline a Christian, Muslim and Jewish understanding of what God is like. We will present different views on why people believe in God or not.

Music: During this half term, we will be rehearsing our songs to perform in the harvest festival celebration in St. Cuthbert's Church. In addition, we will be learning and practising our songs in preparation for our 'Young Voices' concert.

Geography: In Geography, we will be using the 8 points of a compass and using 4 and 6-figure grid references. The children will be using symbols and keys on a map to build their knowledge of the U.K.

Year 5 – Autumn 1 ‘All Aboard the Hogwarts Express’ Spanish: This half term's Spanish unit is Presenting Myself / Me presento. We will learn to count up to 50 in Spanish.

We will also ask somebody how they are feeling, their age, name and where they live. In addition, we will learn how to say how we are feeling, how old we are, what our name is and where we live. We will apply rules of adjectival agreement when saying our nationality.

Computing: During this half term, our topic is Online Safety. We will understand how apps can access our personal information and how to alter the permissions. We will learn to be aware of the positive and negative aspects of online communication and understand how online information can be used to form judgements. We will discover ways to overcome bullying and understand how technology can affect health and wellbeing.

PSHE: PSHE: During this half term in PSHE, the children will be learning about the difference between a fixed mindset and a growth mindset. They will also be exploring feelings and emotions.

Maths: During our Maths lessons this half-term, the children will start by furthering their understanding of multiplication and division. Within this topic, the children will be exploring the concept of: multiples, factors, prime numbers, square & cube numbers and practise multiplying/dividing by 10, 100 and 1,000! The children will then begin to look at equivalent and improper fractions, before attempting to order, compare and convert!

Science: In Science this half term we will be starting our new topic Earth and Space. We will be learning all about spherical bodies, the movement of the moon and features of the planets. We will learn all about the famous Galileo Galilie, work scientifically pattern seeking and then investigate day and night.

Year 5 – Autumn 2 ‘Blast Off!’

English: This half term, we will be focusing on reading and writing newspaper reports. After learning about the features of this genre, the children will write their own newspaper reports which link to our 'Blast off!' topic. As part of our grammar and punctuation lessons, the children will practise using direct and indirect speech. There will also be a focus on using relative clauses within their writing. Within our reading lessons, the children will explore a range of texts from sci-fi to Christmas poetry.

PSHE: During this half term, the children will be looking at keeping safe and healthy.

They will discuss how to maintain a healthy lifestyle by eating the correct food and exercising regularly. They will also look at mental health and keeping their minds healthy. The children will discuss peer pressure and identify the best resolutions when faced with challenging scenarios.

RE: In RE we will be discussing big questions such as 'What is a place of worship and what is it for? We will be looking from the Christian, Jewish and Hindu point of view. We will also be questioning 'Are people more important than the place? What does a place of worship mean to believers?'

Spanish: With Señor Asensi, the children will be learning to count up to 50, before learning the names for different family members. The children will then begin to describe their relatives age, relationship and appearance.

PE: In P.E this half term, the children will swap WLSP coaches. Larch & Beech classes, will be partaking in athletics, while Chestnut & Alder will be playing a variety of invasion games.

All children in Year 5 will be visiting Tarleton Academy each week, for their swimming lessons. The children will be building up to swimming 25m over the course of the sessions.

D.T: In D.T, the children are going to be studying various mechanical systems (such as levers) and producing their own pop-up books. They will be responsible for designing, writing and illustrating their children's book and they will follow the story of Raymond Briggs' 'The Snowman'.

Year 5 – Autumn 2 ‘Blast Off!’

Music: During Autumn 2, the children will be preparing for not only the Young Voices concert in January, but preparations will be well underway for our spectacular Carol Concert at St Cuthbert's Church on December 15th!

Computing: In Computing this half herm, pupils will begin their new topic Data handling: Mars Rover. They will be researching and calculating the distance from Earth to Mars and will explain how the Mars Rover transmits the data back to Earth.

They will identify input, processing and output on the Mars Rovers.

Read binary numbers and grasp the concept of binary addition.

We will Relate binary signals (Boolean) to a simple character-based language, ASCII.
