Maths: This half term we will be consolidating our learning around decimal numbers and looking at the Year 5 geometry objectives. Number- Decimals: • Multiplying and dividing decimals by 10, 100 and 1,000 Geometry- Properties of Shape: • Measure, compare, order, draw and calculate angles in degrees. • Reasoning about triangles, quadrilaterals and 3-D shapes. • Describing position and translation on a grid. • Plotting and carrying out translation with coordinates. Computing: In the ICT suite, the children will apply their understanding of coding, to create a piece of music, which combines a variety of structures, using the app ‘Sonic Pi’!
Year 5 – Summer 1 ‘Vile Victorians’
English: When the children return after Easter, they will be exploring the features within writing a formal letter. They will look at writing in the 1st person, using rhetorical questions and formal tone. We will then put these skills to practise, writing a letter to King Charles to congratulate on his upcoming coronation. To tie in with our Victorian topic, the children will explore extracts from different a variety of Charles Dickens texts.
History: During this half term in History, the children will be delving into the Victorian era and investigating the question, 'How did life change for children in Victorian Britain?' They will be exploring historical sources and drawing their own opinions and conclusions. The children will take part in a fantastic Victorian day introducing them to life as a poor child in Victorian times, focusing on schools, slums and workhouses!
