Maths:

To start Year 5, the children will be exploring numbers up to 1,000,000. Children will learn to read, write, compare, order and partition these much larger numbers! We will then recap the written methods for addition and subtraction and apply our skills to a larger number range, before delving into the realms of multiples, factors, prime numbers, square numbers and cube numbers before October half-term.

Year 5 – Autumn 1

‘All Aboard the Hogwarts Express’

Science:

This half-term, our topic is ‘Forces’. The children will learn about the concept of gravity and how it acts a force between the Earth and falling objects. After that, the children will identify the effects of air resistance, water resistance and friction, that act between moving surfaces. We will also be learning about key scientists, such as Isaac Newton and how he developed the theory of gravitation.

Art:

In this collection of lessons, the children will learn and develop their skills in: design, drawing, craft, painting and art appreciation. They will be designing their own invention, expanding on an observational drawing and using a poem to create a portrait! They will paint an enlarged section of a drawn collage and learn to ‘think’ like an artist.

English: Our genre for this half term is instructional writing. We will be identifying the features of an instructional text and then applying our knowledge when writing a range of texts including instructions to make a magical potion and instructions for how to care for a magical creature. Our grammar lessons will focus on conjunctions and fronted adverbials. In addition, we will explore how to use colons and semicolons as well as punctuation for parenthesis.

PE: In P.E this half term, the children will be having lessons in athletics or invasion games.

RE:

In RE we will be exploring the question 'Why do some people believe God exists?.' We will define the terms theist, atheist and agnostic and outline a Christian, Muslim and Jewish understanding of what God is like. We will present different views on why people believe in God or not.

Geography: In Geography, we will be using the 8 points of a compass and using 4 and 6-figure grid references. The children will be using symbols and keys on a map to build their knowledge of the U.K.

Computing:

Music:

During this half term, we will be rehearsing our songs to perform in the harvest festival celebration in St. Cuthbert's Church. In addition, we will be learning and practising our songs in preparation for our 'Young Voices' concert.

Spanish: This half term's Spanish unit is Presenting Myself / Me presento. We will learn to count up to 50 in Spanish. We will also ask somebody how they are feeling, their age, name and where they live. In addition, we will learn how to say how we are feeling, how old we are, what our name is and where we live. We will apply rules of adjectival agreement when saying our nationality.

During this half term, our topic is Online Safety. We will understand how apps can access our personal information and how to alter the permissions. We will learn to be aware of the positive and negative aspects of online communication and understand how online information can be used to form judgements. We will discover ways to overcome bullying and understand how technology can affect health and wellbeing.

PSHE:

PSHE: During this half term in PSHE, the children will be learning about the difference between a fixed mindset and a growth mindset. They will also be exploring feelings and emotions.
