English: Our writing focus this half term will be about biographies. Through our reading lessons, we will look at the biographies of a variety of scientists and inventors to plan and create our own biographies. Our grammar focus will be recapping relative clauses and subordinate clauses and we will continue to learn spellings from the Year 3 & 4 Statutory Spelling List

Year 4 Summer Half-term 2: ‘Bright Sparks’

Geography:

We will start our final half term with National Fieldwork Week which will link with our focus on mapping skills. We will learn the 8 points of a compass and use 4-figure grid references to locate places on a map.

Science: Electricity

We will learn about electrical appliances and construct simple electrical circuits, identifying the key components such as cells, bulbs, wires and switches. We will also learn to recognise common conductors and insulators, understanding that metals are good conductors.

History: This area of the curriculum will be covered in Summer 2.

PE: Pine & Birch – Dance

Maple – OAA

Music:

Maple will be learning how to play the djembe drums and guitar. Pine will be learning to play the trumpet. Birch will be learning to play clarinet.

Art & Design and Design Technology:

In design technology, we will be evaluating a range of torch designs before designing and creating our own. We will use our knowledge of simple circuits to construct a working torch with a switch.

RE: Why is Jesus inspiring to some people?

We will be exploring different reasons why Jesus is considered an inspiring figure by Christians and by many other people too. ent to exemplify the learning outcomes through considering what makes a person inspirational to others and identifying characteristics of a good role model.

PSHE: A World Without Judgement

Spanish: La clase / The classroom:

• Recall from memory a selection of nouns and indefinite articles for common classroom objects.

Computing: Computational Thinking

We will be developing our coding skills using the ‘Scratch’ software to create a simple game. We will be using decomposition to solve problems that may arise in the games we create.

We will learn how to identify positive attributes in others and explain why being different is ok. We will recognise our own strengths and goals and understand that these might be different from others.

• Learn how to use the negative in Spanish.

• Describe what we have and do not have in our pencil case.

English: We will be reading the text ‘Once Upon a Liverpool’ which will link to our topic based performance this half term.

We will also be focussing on news reports on significant events in Liverpool and creating poetry based on the work of Roger McGough. Our reading focus will be liked to our topic about Liverpool and its architectural structures.

History: We will discover how Liverpool became the city of today. We will uncover preserved Stone Age footprints in Merseyside and understand how the history and culture has developed. We will learn about the ‘Three Graces’, slavery, and look at how Liverpool suffered during WW2. We will also study the impact of music, the Beatles and Mersey Beat.

Science: States of Matter.

We will learn to compare and group materials together depending on whether they are solids, liquids or gases. We will learn about the properties of each state of matter and understand how materials change state when they are heated or cooled. We will also study the roles of evaporation and condensation in the water cycle.

Geography:

This area of the curriculum will be covered in Summer 2.

PE:

Year 4 Summer Half-term 1: ‘Imagine’

Music:

Maple will be learning how to play the djembe drums and guitar. Pine will be learning to play the trumpet. Birch will be learning to play clarinet.

Art & Design and Design Technology: Drawing – Power Prints

We will learn how to create 3D effects using shading and create images using a variety of tools and techniques. We will create a finished drawing based on our original compositions, including detail such as contrast and pattern. Design Technology – This area of the curriculum will be covered in Summer 2.

RE: What does it mean to be a Hindu in Britain today?

We will be investigating key aspects of Hindu beliefs and worship. We will be focussing on British Hindus and the diversity in ancient and modern Hindu traditions.

PSHE: The Working World

Spanish: Los instrumentos musicales / Musical Instruments:

• Name and recognise up to 10 instruments in Spanish.

Computing: This area of the curriculum is covered in Autumn 1, Spring 1 & 2 and Summer 2.

We will be identifying ways in which we can help those who look after us and discuss the positive impact of our actions. We will be exploring ways of contributing positively towards our home, school and wider community.

We will also look at the skills we might need in future job roles.

• Attempt to spell some of these nouns with their correct definite article/determiner in Spanish.

• Learn how to say I play an instrument in Spanish.

• Learning to recognise and learn cognates such as guitarra, piano, clarinete first.

We will be learning about South America, identifying the physical geography and features of Brazil. We will recognise and describe the cultural attractions there and compare Brazil with a region in the UK.

Year 4 Spring Half-term 2: ‘Going, Going, Gone’

Science: Living Things and Their Habitats

We will continue to study animals in their habitats and look at how environments can change and how this can pose dangers to living things.

English: We will be continuing to use our theme to inspire our writing for setting descriptions and non-chronological reports. In grammar, we will focus on using similes, possessive apostrophes and relative clauses. In spellings we will look at words ending with –sure and words with the short ‘u’ sound spelt ‘ou’.

History: This area of the curriculum has been covered in Autumn 1 and 2 and will be covered in Summer 1.

PE: Birch and Maple classes will be developing their skills in gymnastics and Pine class will be improving their fielding techniques, with a focus on throwing and catching, and using these skills in games.

Music: Wider opportunities (instrument focus) Pine will be learning how to play the djembe drums and guitar with Mr Pritchard. Maple & Birch will be learning to play the trumpet and clarinet with the music teachers from Sefton.

We will be describing some of the features of a biscuit based on taste, smell, texture and appearance. We will then plan and adapt a biscuit recipe within a budget before baking our biscuits and designing our own packaging.

RE: Why do some people think that life is a journey?

We will compare the religious journeys of the Christian, Jewish and Hindu communities considering the significant experiences that mark these journeys.

Year 4 Spring Half-term 1: ‘Going, Going, Gone’

We will continue to use variables in coding through the program Scratch and understand how Scratch works by using decomposition to identify key features.

We will be identifying the different types of relationships we can have and describe how these can change as we grow. We will also identify how relationships can be healthy or unhealthy and explain how our families can support us.

• Attempt to spell some of these nouns with their plural article/determiner.

• Learn and use the high frequency verb "quisiera" from the verb “querer” in Spanish.

Year 4 Spring Half-term 1: ‘Going, Going, Gone’

Science: Life Processes

We will identify the seven life processes and group and classify living things according to their features. We will be taking part in an invertebratehuntand studying the local habitatand environmental changes.

English: Our qualitytext will be ‘The Great Kapok Tree’. We will be using our theme to create Haiku poems and writing a persuasive text around the issues of deforestation.We will continue to look at the grammatical features used for writing in Year 4 such as relative clauses and subordinateclauses.

History: This area of the curriculum has been covered in Autumn 1 and 2 and will be covered in Summer 1.

PE:

In PE we will be developingour skills in dance and outdoor adventurousactivities. We will also be starting swimming later this half term.

Using the flora and fauna of tropical rainforests as a starting point, we will develop drawings through experimentation and textile-based techniques to design a repeating pattern suitable for fabric. Design Technology – This area of the curriculum will be covered in Spring 2.

RE: How do family life and festivals show what matters to Jewish people?

We will learn about how Jewish people show their beliefs through worship in festivals, both at home and in wider communities.

Year 4 Spring Half-term 1: ‘Going, Going, Gone’

We will be using variables in coding through the program Scratch and understandinghow Scratch works by using decomposition to identify key features.

We will be looking at rules and guidelines children may have to follow when thinking about home time.

Spanish: La fecha / The date: We will recall, from memory, the seven days of the week, the twelve months of the year and numbers 1-31 in Spanish. We will also ask and answer what the date is in Spanish.

English: Our qualitytext will be ‘Stone Age Boy’. We will also be focussing on writing to entertain where we will be writing setting and character descriptions. We will build on our knowledge of grammatical features such as expanded noun phrases, similes and fronted adverbials to add interest and description in our writing. Our reading focus will be linked to our topic about the Stone Age and our Science topic on teeth and digestion.

Geography:

History: We will study the early civilization periodsfrom the Stone Age to the Iron Age and how artefacts and discoveries have led to developingour understandingof these periods in history. We will develop our chronological understandingusing timelines to identify the different periods of the Stone Age, Bronze Age and Iron Age.

First, we will be learning about the different types of teeth and their functions. We will then describe the basic parts of the digestive system in humans and how they work to break down and digest food. Finally,we will be constructing and interpreting a variety of food chains, identifying producers, predatorsand prey.

We will be using a variety of online documents to share comments and ideas whilst understandingthe need to be thoughtful when working on a collaborativedocument.

PSHE: Feelings and Emotions

We will be exploring feelings of jealousy, anger and worry and will develop our skills to manage our emotions positively and understand how and where to seek help if needed.

We will be learning about the culture of Spain includingfood, traditionsand what Spain is well known for. We will be learning how to greet people in Spanish and say goodbye and also review colours and numbers 1 to 20.

English: Our qualitytext will be ‘The Egyptian Cinderella’.We will be writing our own version of a traditional talewith an Egyptian twist. We will continueto build on our knowledge of expanded noun phrases, similes and fronted adverbials and also develop our understandingof inverted commas. We will be reading a variety of traditional tales to support our writing and will focus on our RE topic about inspirational figures.

We will identify how sounds are made and understand that vibrationstravel through a medium to the ear. We will be investigating patterns between volumes of sounds and the vibrationsthat produced it. We will also consider how sound can change with distance from the source.
