English:

During this half term, our quality text will be an Usborne Young Reader copy of Beowulf, a traditional Anglo Saxon oral story. We will learn how to use dialogue in writing, thinking carefully about punctuation and then we will be writing our own myth based on the story.

History:

In our History lessons, we will be looking closely at the Anglo Saxons, where they came from and why. They will learn about their settlements, laws and way of life. The children will use primary and secondary sources and compare Anglo Saxon life with Roman life in Britain

Year 3 Summer:1

‘Anglo Saxons'

Geography: This area of the curriculum will be covered in Summer 2, where we will be completing some fieldwork.

Maths:

Mass and Capacity: The children will be reading scales to find the mass of objects using grams (g) and Kilograms (Kg). They will find equivalent measurements and compare them too. They will find the capacity and volume of liquids using Litres (L) and millimetres (ml). They will be adding and subtracting mass, volume and capacity.

PE: Working each week with WLSP, the children will take part in striking and fielding activities. Teachers will be teaching OAA.

Fractions: The children will be adding and subtracting fractions. They will also be finding the unit fraction amount and the non-unit fraction amount of a group of items. They will also reason with fractional amounts.

Money: The children will be using pounds and pence to add, subtract and find the change using money.

Music: This half term, with Mr Pritchard, the children will be doing the following: Rockin' rhythms - Rhythmic study of drumbeats - focus on structure, dynamics and duration.

Year 3 Summer:1

‘Anglo Saxons’

Art: Sculpture

Computing: The children will be looking at Data Handling this half term. Using data cards (like TOP Trumps) they will sort, analyse and present information in a range of ways.

The children will learn how to transform 2D card shapes into threedimensional structures and sculptures. They will explore abstract shapes and space, develop skills in constructing 3D objects, and understand the difference between 2D and 3D art.

PSHE:

In P.S.H.E, we will be focusing on humans and the planet, looking after our world and looking at how we can go on a recycling journey.

RE:

What can we learn from sacred books? We will explore a variety of holy books from different religions and learn how they act as a source of guidance. We will then look more closely at the Bible and how Christians use the Bible in their lives.

Design Technology: This area of the curriculum will be covered in Summer 2.

Science: The children will be learning about Light. The new National Curriculum, introduced in 2014, requires children in Year 3 to understand that they need light to see and that light is reflected from surfaces. They will explore shadows and learn how shadows are formed when a light source is blocked by an opaque item.

Spanish: Sé / I know how…:

• Recognise, recall and spell 10 action verbs in Spanish.

• Use these verbs in the infinitive to form positive and negative sentence structures with ‘sé’ (I know how to…) / ‘no sé’ (I do not know how to ..).

• Attempt to combine positive and negative sentence structures to form longer and more complex sentences using the conjunctions ‘y’ (and) & ‘pero’ (but).

English: Our quality text for this half term will be the marvellous book by Philip Pullman, 'The Firework Maker's Daughter'. We will be having a weekly reading comprehension session, followed by a range of different drama, speaking and listening and writing opportunities. These will include instructional writing and narrative writing. Spelling groups and RWI phonics will continue, with some children moving groups after their recent assessments.

Year 3 Half-term: Spring 2

Journeys

Science: We will be learning about plants and identifying and describing the functions of the different parts of a plant. We will then explore the requirements for plant life and growth, learn about the life cycle of a plant and investigate the way water is transported within plants.

Whole class reading: In our reading lessons, we will be continuing to read a range of fiction, non-fiction and poetry texts linked to our theme work. We will be focusing on retrieval and inference skills and building our knowledge of vocabulary. We will also be focusing on making accurate predictions and explaining our ideas about a text.

Maths: We start this half term by learning all about length and perimeter. We will be measuring in metres, centimetres and millimetres and looking at equivalent lengths. We will then compare, add and subtract length. We will then learn about perimeter using our understanding to measure and calculate perimeter. We will continue the term by looking at Fractions, learning about numerators and denominators in both unit and non-unit fractions. We will then compare fractions and learn about equivalent fractions.

PE: Working each week with WLSP, the children will take part in dance. Teachers will be teaching invasion games on the field.

Music: This half term, the children will be learning to play the ukulele with a focus on dynamics, tempo and chords. They will also accompany the ukulele with singing, as well as learning Easter songs for Church.

Design Technology: The children will be looking at seasonal foods in our DT unit this term. They will look at where our food comes from, make a fruit skewer and cook a delicious fruit or vegetable tart.

Spanish: Las formas / Shapes:

• Name and recognise up to 10 shapes in Spanish.

• Attempt to spell some of these shapes.

• Recognise that nouns are commonly associated with an article in Spanish and in this case ‘un’ or ‘una’.

Year 3 Half-term: Spring 2

Journeys

PSHE: This half term we will be focusing on relationships including body language and emotions and appropriate ways of communicating.

Geography: This half term, we will be building our locational knowledge of Europe and making comparisons between a region of the UK and a region of Italy. We will also be studying the natural wonders of the world.

Computing: This half term we will be looking at internet safety exploring how we can keep ourselves safe online.

RE: This half term we will be continuing to deepen our understanding of our topic of prayer. We will study how prayer in Christianity and Hinduism. We will also study symbols linked to prayer.

Art: This area of the curriculum will be covered in Summer.

English: During this half term we will be using Quentin Blake's 'The Green Ship' as our quality text. The Green Ship is a thematically rich picture book which captures both adult and child perspectives in the same narrative making it a thought-provoking text to read and revisit with children (and adults) of different ages. We will be writing our own diary entries based on the characters' adventures. Grammar, spelling and punctuation work will also support the children's writing.

Year 3 Half-term: Spring 1

Journeys

Science: Forces and Magnets: This series of lessons focuses on giving Y3 children an understanding of forces and magnets, and what makes objects move and how. They will do a range of activities for effective and engaging learning using different materials and the character Traction Man.

Maths:

In Maths this half term, we will be looking at multiplication and division focussing more on the 4 & 8 times table. We will then be looking at mental and written strategies such as multiplying and dividing with no exchange and with exchange, with a focus on remainders.

Whole class reading: In our reading lessons, we will be continuing to read a range of fiction, non-fiction and poetry texts linked to our geography and science topics. We will be focusing on retrieval and inference skills and building our knowledge of vocabulary. We will also be focusing on making accurate predictions.

Following this, we will be focussing on length and perimeter, looking at measuring in m, cm & ml and then using this to compare, add, subtract lengths. We will be finishing off with looking at measuring and calculating perimeter.

PE: Working each week with WLSP, the children will take part in dance. Teachers will be teaching invasion games on the field.

Music: In our Music lessons with Mr. Pritchard, as a School, we will cover Chinese New Year, with Year 3 focusing on - Chinese New YearGreetings songs, numbers and letters songs and composition.

Year 3 Half-term: Spring 1

Journeys

Spanish: New topic: Los instrumentos musicales / Musical instruments:

• Recognise, recall and spell up to 10 instruments in Spanish with the correct definite article/determiner.

• Understand articles/determiners better and that the definite article/determiner ‘the’ has a plural form in Spanish.

• Learn to say and write ‘I play an instrument’ in Spanish using the high frequency 1st person regular verb ‘toco’ (I play) with up to 10 different instruments.

Computing: This half term, we are going to be working on our word processing skills.

Geography: This half term, we will be building our locational knowledge of Europe including the UK. We will studying capital cities and comparing and contrasting human and physical features in various countries.

PSHE: In PSHE we are focussing on the unit 'Being Responsible' looking at the themes: 'Helping someone in need' and 'Stealing'.

RE: In RE, we will be learning about why people pray. We will examine what prayer is and how it is practised and regarded in Christianity, Islam and Hinduism.

DT: The children will draw accurate diagrams with correct labels, arrows and explanations. They will correctly identify definitions for key terms. They will Identify five appropriate design criteria and create a finished pneumatic toy that fulfils the design brief.

English: During this half term, our quality text will be 'Violent Volcanoes', written by Anita Ganeri and illustrated by Mike Phillips. Throughout this unit, we will be learning how to write a nonchronological report to support our Geography learning about volcanoes and develop our non-fiction writing skills. We will also be using our knowledge of how to use descriptive language to write our own shape poem about a volcano erupting. The children will continue to practise and write using cursive script, focussing on how to form each letter accurately and consistently. Science: In our Science lessons, we will complete our unit of work on Animals including Humans. This will include looking at different types and amounts of nutrition and identifying that humans have skeletons and muscles for support, protection and movement.

Year 3 Half-term: Autumn 2

Blast from the Past

Whole class reading: In our reading lessons, we will be continuing to read a range of fiction, non-fiction and poetry texts linked to our history and science topics. We will be focusing on retrieval and inference skills and building our knowledge of vocabulary. We will also be focusing on making accurate predictions.

Maths: In maths this half term, we will be working on Addition & Subtraction we will work up from adding and subtracting 1, 10 and 100 up to 3-digit addition and subtraction questions. These mental methods will then be followed by more formal written methods. This will include columnar methods which will start without crossing the tens boundary and then it will move on to carrying across columns. We will also look at partitioning and number lines which include counting on and counting back.

PE: Working each week with WLSP, the children will continue to take part in athletics lessons or invasion games. These will be on the field.

Music: In our Music lessons with Mr. Pritchard, we are doing the following: Learning how to play 'Little Donkey'Reading music, keyboard skills and pitch study

Year 3 Half-term: Autumn 2

Blast from the Past

Spanish: This half term in Y3 Spanish we will be moving on from learning and saying greetings to cover the following:

Los numeros y los colores / Numbers and colours unit:

History: In History we will be learning about the Romans and the Roman Empire, thinking about how they invaded Britain and the impact they have had on Britain. Boudica, Hadrian's Wall and what legacy did they leave us with.

Computing: This term we will continue to ensure that we work safely online. We will be programming using 'Scratch' and making sure that we can sequence commands to create a simple game.

PSHE: In P.S.H.E, will are focusing on Health, particularly brushing our teeth and medicines.

• Saying 10 common colours in Spanish.

• Count from 1-10 in Spanish.

RE: In R.E we will be studying what Christians, Muslims and Hindus celebrate and the festivals associated with their religions. We will learn about the similarities and differences between them.

Art: In our Art lessons, we will be studying the formal elements of art including shading and toning. We will work towards creating our own botanical inspired artwork.

English: During this half term, our quality text will be 'Escape from Pompeii' by Christina Balit. Using this text, we will be writing setting descriptions focusing on using descriptive language. We will also be writing our own version of the story from another viewpoint. To support our learning and develop our skills, throughout this unit we will be looking at features of language such as adjectives, powerful verbs, adverbs, prepositional phrases and similes and incorporating these into our independent writing.

Year 3 Half-term: Autumn 1

The Romans

Science: In our Science lessons, we will complete our unit of work on Rocks. We will compare and group different rocks according to their appearance and properties. We will also be looking about how fossils are formed.

Maths: In maths this half term, we will be working on Place Value and Addition & Subtraction. The children will be working on identifying, representing and estimating numbers using different manipulatives. They will learn about each place and its value (H,T,O) and count in multiples of 4, 8, 50 and 100. They will find 1, 10 or

100 more than numbers also. In Addition & Subtraction we will work up from adding and subtracting 1, 10 and
