Year 2 - Summer 1

English: For our quality text we will be focusing on a range of ‘ Traditional Tales’. From this we will be writing an alternative narrative to the ‘Three Little Pigs’, creating our own main character and writing character descriptions, creating instructions about how to make a gingerbread man, write a recount on Jack and the Beanstalk and much more! We will continue to embed our knowledge of the use of full stops, exclamation marks and question marks, the use of capital letters for sentences and proper nouns, continue our work on coordinating and subordinating conjunctions and use lots of adjectives.

Science:

Our Science unit this half term is called ‘Animals including humans’. Throughout this unit, we are going to explore the basic needs of animals and humans, look at how animals and humans grow and change. We will also develop our understanding of the importance of a healthy diet and good hygiene.

Maths: We will continue to focus on measurement such as ‘length and height’ and ‘mass, capacity and temperature’. The children will be using a mixture standard units of measurement such as centimetres, metres, grams, milligrams, millilitres and litres. The children will learn to order and compare the different measurements and then use the four operations of calculations to solve problems. We will then continue to learn about Fractions. The children will focus on halves, quarters and thirds. They will also learn the language of unit and non-unit fractions.

Year 2 – Summer 1: Art & Design- Drawing: This unit focuses on helping pupils develop their ability to tell a story through drawing. It includes lessons on creating textures, observational drawing, character expression and storytelling through illustrations.

PE: We will be having a big focus on developing the children’s Fundamental Skills. WLSP will be focusing on striking and catching and teachers will be focusing on travelling, balancing and rolling through Gymnastics.

Geography: We will begin our unit by finding out more about the countries that make up the United Kingdom. We will then move on to looking close to home with a focus on Southport as a seaside resort. Following this, we will then compare and contrast our home town with Southport, Australia, identifying the key physical and human features.

Spanish: Bajo el mar / Under the sea:

• Recognise, recall and remember up to 7 different sea creatures in Spanish. • Learn to listen attentively to, understand and participate actively in a Spanish song about creatures that live under the sea.

PSHE. we are going to be focusing on how we both live and work in ‘Our World’ We will focus on why we should look after living things and why it is important to keep our community and countryside clean. We will then look at different ways we receive money, how we keep money safe and look at future jobs and careers.

Computing: We will be linking to our Science by learning about the international space station to find out about how astronauts survive on board the ISS and how they interpret data to help them to survive.

Music: This term we will be carrying on with the ukulele, with a focus on duration and vocal pitch. We will also perform African rhythms on the djembe drums, with a focus on structure and dynamics.

RE: Our key question this half term is: Who is a Muslim and what do they believe. We will look what they believe about their God, who is the prophet Muhammad and why he is important and how and why they pray and worship at a mosque.

English:

We will be focusing on a mixture of different non-fiction texts and from this we will be writing instructions and creating explanation texts linking them to our Science knowledge of plants. Using high quality texts, we will be looking at how different non-fiction texts are structured and then look closely at features and new vocabulary. We will be teaching the children the difference between present and past tenses, the use of commas in a list, subordination and coordination and also the difference in statements, questions and commands. We will end the term by looking at performance poetry using appropriate intonation to make the meaning clear.

Maths:

This half term we will be continuing our work on ‘Money’ and ‘Multiplication and Division’. We will be focusing on the 2s, 5s and 10s. The children will make connection between repeated addition and multiplication. We will also be focusing on ‘Length and Height’. The children will be using non-standard units such as cubes and then begin to look at measuring using a ruler. The children will be learning about ‘cm’/ centimetres.

Year 2 – Spring

Art & Design: Craft and design: Map it out. This unit focuses on teaching children to explore and create maps through various art forms including drawing, felt making, printmaking and designing stained glass.

Science: We will be learning all about plants. This will include keeping a growth chart of how plants grow from bulbs and seeds. Our learning will focus on the life processes of plants and during our visit to Botanic Gardens we will look at different types of plants and trees.

Geography: We will be developing our skills in map work and field work. As part of our learning, we will be undertaking field work in Botanic Gardens, looking for human and physical features. We will also be creating maps and symbols.

PSHE: Through PSHE, we see the children develop and grow –building positive relationships with their peers. This half term, we will focus on friends, family and bullying. Following this, we will be looking at Online Safety especially around ‘Image sharing’.

Music: We will be learning ‘Easter’ songs and learning how to play Ukuleles. We will be a focus on duration, dynamics and timbre.

Spanish: Los transportes/ Transports:

• Recognise, recall and remember up to 7 modes of transport in Spanish.

• Recognise, recall and remember a short phrase for each mode of transport in Spanish.

• Learn to listen attentively to, understand and participate actively in a Spanish song about transport.

RE: We will be exploring ‘How should we care for others in the world and why does it matter? We will focus on Christianity, Islam and Judaism and look at ways in which they care for others and the world.

PE: In PE, we will be focussing on Outdoor Adventurous Activities with WLSP and Invasion games with School staff.

Computing: Year 2 will begin to work on algorithms and debugging in the computer suite using the computer programme ‘Scratch’.

English: During this half term we will be using a range of Julia Donaldson’s stories such as ‘The Snail and the Whale’, ‘Tabby McTat’ &’The Gruffalo’s child’ as our quality texts. These picture books are rich in rhyming languages, illustrations, interesting characters and are based on a number of different settings, such as woods, oceans, cities and castles. We will be focusing on our grammar, spelling and punctuation skills. We are also going to be focusing on how we embed our phonics knowledge in our writing.

Science: We will be focusing on ‘Living things and their habitats’. We will recap our Year 1 learning of how to classify animals and look at the vocabulary of carnivore, herbivore and omnivore. Through this we will describe how animals obtain their food from plants and other animals, using the idea of a simple food chain, and identify and name different sources of food.

Year 2

Half-term:

Spring 1

Whole class reading: In our reading lessons, we will be continuing to read a range of fiction, non-fiction and poetry texts. We will be focusing on developing our retrieval and inference skills and building our knowledge of vocabulary. We will also create opportunities for mini writes.

Maths:

In Maths this half term, we will looking at money including; identifying coins, making different amounts and giving and receiving amounts in pounds and pence. Following on from this we will be moving on to multiplication and division focussing more on the 2,5 and 10 times tables. We will then be looking at mental and written strategies such as multiplying and dividing with no exchange and with exchange.

PE: The children will participate in team games, developing simple tactics for attacking and defending and with WLSP they will perform dances using simple movement patterns.

Music: In our Music lessons with Mr. Pritchard, we will be embracing the music of Chinese New Year through song and using the keyboards.

PSHE: In PSHE we are focussing on the unit; Being Responsible, covering topics such as practice makes perfect, helping someone in need and stealing.

RE: Learning Questions: Who is Jewish and what do they believe? In RE, we will be learning about Judaism, with a specific focus on and how the Jewish community celebrate Shabbat and Sukkot.

DT: Mechanisms The children will draw accurate diagrams with correct labels, arrows and explanations. They will correctly identify definitions for key terms. They will Identify five appropriate design criteria and create a finished ‘Moving Monster’ that fulfils the design brief.

Year 2 Half-term: Spring 1

Spanish: En la selva / In the jungle: The children will:

• recognise, recall and remember up to 7 different jungle animals in Spanish.

• recognise, recall and remember a short phrase for each jungle animal in Spanish.

• learn to listen attentively to, understand and participate actively in a Spanish song about animals that may live in the jungle

Computing: Developing an understanding of what algorithms are, how to program them and how they can be developed to be more efficient through a range of unplugged and plugged-in activities.

History: This half term, we will be learning about the life and times of Christopher Columbus. We will be studying the journeys he took and following the routes across the continents and oceans we have learnt about in our Geography lessons.

Maths:

In English, this half term, our quality texts will be ‘Traction Man’ and ‘The Christmasaurus’. Through these we will be continuing to look at what makes a ‘good’ sentence. We will also be developing our use of conjunctions and developing our spelling of tricky words.

Science:

English: Art & Design: Painting and mixing media. The children will develop their knowledge of colour mixing, know how texture can be created with paint, use paint to explore texture and pattern and compose a collage, choosing and arranging materials for effect.

Our Science unit this half term is materials, as part of this we will be planning and carrying out our own investigations on a range of materials. We will also have a visit from Adrian and his travelling Science Show.

In Maths this half term, we will be focussing on addition, subtraction and shape. In addition and subtraction we will be developing key skills such as adding 10 more and subtracting 10 less. We will then subtract across 10 and subtracting from a 10. In shape we will recognise many 2D and 3D shapes and use the correct vocabulary such as vertices, sides, edges and lines of symmetry.

Year 2 – Autumn 2:

PE: In PE, we will be continuing our learning in both Athletics and Gymnastics, looking at other Fundamental Skills such as hopping, skipping, rolling and catching.

History:

Through our History lessons, we will be learning about the life and times of Guy Fawkes. We will be exploring a range of historical enquiry skills to enhance our learning, such as role play and hot seating.

Spanish :

Los colores y los números / Colours and numbers. We will name and recognise up to 10 colours in Spanish. We will also count from 1-10 in Spanish.

Music:

In Music this half term, we will be learning our Christmas songs for our class performance. We will focus on pitch and structure.

Computing:

This half term, the children will begin to learn about word processing and developing our keyboard skills.

PSHE

In our school, we follow the 1 decision scheme to teach our PSHE, we will also continue with our regular circle times. In addition to this we will be looking at fire safety. We may also be visited by an actual fire fighter!

RE: How and why do we celebrate special sacred times? With a special focus on Christmas.

This half term we will be learning all about the Christmas story and what it means to Christians, how Christians celebrate Christmas and the story of advent. We are also participating in a Children’s University Masterclass called ‘‘Christmas story time’ presented by Storybarn at The Reader Organisation’. We will also be learning about other festivals such as Diwali and Hannukah.

English:

In English, this half term, our quality text will be ‘The Bog Baby’. We will be creating story maps, collecting adventurous adjectives, writing descriptive sentences about the story and making a ‘Missing’ poster. Our focus will be on handwriting, presentation and sentence structure.

Maths:

In Maths this half term, we will be focusing on Place Value and deepening our understanding of numbers. We will consolidate, and build on concepts introduced in Year 1, including counting, ordering numbers, comparing numbers, and numbers as words.

Science:

Our Science unit this half term is animals and their habitats. We will explore the differences between things that are ‘living’, ‘dead’ and things that have ‘never been alive’. We will also learning about habitats and describe how different habitats provide for basic needs of animals and plants, and how they depend on each other.

Year 2 – Autumn 1

Design Technology:

We will be following the process of ‘design’, ‘make’ and ‘evaluate’ to make our own structure of a chair. We will be looking at ways to make our structures ‘stable’ and ‘strong’. We will also be focusing on materials that we can use both natural and man-made.

PE:

In PE, alongside the teachers, West Lancashire Sports Partnership (WSLP) will teaching Athletic. Alongside developing the children’s fundamental skills the children will be learning about different running, jumping, throwing athletic events.

We will also be learning about Gymnastics where children will continue to develop their balance, agility and coordination skills.

PSHE

In our school, we follow the 1 decision scheme to teach our PSHE. Through PSHE, we see the children develop and grow –building positive relationships with their peers. This half term we will focus on feelings and emotions, including worry.

Spanish:

The children will be learning Los saludos /

Greetings: They will learn to say ‘hello’ (formally and informally), say their name, ask how somebody is feeling and give a reply and say ‘goodbye’ and ‘see you soon’.

Geography:

Our focus will be on geographical skills and language, using atlases and compass points, identifying continents and the key oceans. We will also be looking at the four countries that make up the United Kingdom and its surrounding seas. We will be using world maps, atlases and globes.

RE:

Our key question is: What can we learn from sacred books? The children will learn how religious books such as the Torah, the Bible and the Qur’an contain stories which are special to the people who read them.

Music: In Music we will be learning how to play recorders and learning Harvest songs. Our main focus will be on Pitch and Timbre.

Computing:

The children will be exploring what a computer is by identifying and learning how inputs and outputs work and how computers are used in the wider world.
