Year 2 Curriculum including Summer 2023

English:

Maths:

In English, this half term, our quality text will be ‘The Twits’ by Roald Dahl. We will be focusing on developing our writing skills based on the text, including composing a diary entry in role as one of the characters and writing our own chapter. In addition to this we will also write a recount of our fieldwork.

In Maths this half term, we will start by learning all about telling the time! We will look at how we know it is O’clock, half past, quarter to and quarter past before moving on to telling the time to 5 minute intervals. We will then spend the rest of the half term focusing on measures. In Number Ninja, we will continue refining our arithmetic skills.

Science: Our Science unit this half term is called ‘animals including humans’.

Throughout this unit, we are going to explore the basic needs of animals and humans, look at how animals and humans grow and change. We will also develop our understanding of the importance of a healthy diet and good hygiene.

Year 2 – Summer 1: ‘Down Under’ Art & Design and Design Technology: In Art this half term we will be continuing to explore drawing, using line, tone and texture and a wide range of materials to express our ideas as artists.

PE: In PE this half term we will continue to have two sessions a week, one with our class teacher and one with our PE coach.

We are continuing our learning of the fundamental movement skills and will look at: • Skipping • Sidestepping • Rolling • Throwing • Catching • Striking • Kicking

Geography In Geography, we will begin our unit by finding out more about the countries that make up the United Kingdom. We will then move on to looking close to home with a focus on Southport as a seaside resort.

Following this, we will then compare and contrast our home town with Southport, Australia, identifying the key physical and human features.

PSHE In PSHE we are going to be focusing on staying safe and spotting hazards around us. We will learn about Fire Safety and the importance of always being responsible in a range of different scenarios, including when we are faced with difficult decisions to make in our every day lives.

History: This area of the curriculum is taught in Autumn 1, Spring 2 and Summer 2.

Music: In Music this half term, we will be looking at using different musical pulses and developing our percussive control. We will also continue learning to read music.

Computing: We will be linking to our science by learning about the international space station to find out about humans survive and interpreting data.

RE: Our key question this half term is: What can we learn from Sacred books?

We will read different stories told in the Bible and suggest answers to questions which arise from these stories. We will also talk about issues of good and bad, right and wrong and how these are explored through religious stories.

by Enid Blyton. We will explore a range of writing genres such as diary entries and story writing. In addition to this we will also be writing a recount of our field work in Botanic Gardens.

Science: In Science this half term, we will l learning all about plants. This will include keeping a growth chart of how plants grow from bulbs and seeds.

Our learning will focus on the life processes of plants and during our visit to Botanic Gardens we will look at different types of plants and trees.

Maths: In Maths this half term we will begin our learning about fractions, using our prior knowledge of division to help us find halves, thirds and quarters of length, shapes, set of objects and numbers. We will then move on to learning about time, comparing and sequencing intervals of time, telling and writing the time to five minutes, including quarter past/to the hour and draw the hands on a clock face to show these times.

Year 2 – Spring 2: ‘Fairies, Forests and Fieldwork’ Art & Design and Design Technology: In Art this half term, our/ topic is called ‘Clay Houses’ . We will begin with shaping a pinch pot and adding shapes as decoration and complete our learning by designing and making a 3D clay tile with a house design.

PE:

In PE, we will be focussing on dance or functional movement skills. We will be developing our skills of hopping, skipping and sidestepping, and body control through a range of activities.

During dance sessions we will develop our skills independently before creating group dances.

Geography: In Geography this half term, we will be developing our skills in map work and field work. As part of our learning, we will be undertaking field work in Botanic Gardens, looking for human and physical features. We will also be creating maps and symbols for our own ‘Barefoot Island’.

Music: In Music this half term, we will be learning how to play the ukelele. During music lessons with Mr Pritchard the children will have the opportunity to play simple strumming patterns.

PSHE In our school, we follow the 1 decision scheme to teach our PSHE. Through PSHE, we see the children develop and grow – building positive relationships with their peers. This half term we will focus on friends, family and bullying.

RE: This half term we will be exploring Islam and the Muslim religion, learning about Allah, the Prophet Muhammed, the importance of the Qur’an. As part of our learning, we will also look at the Muslim way of life, celebrations and festivals.

History: History will be studied in the Summer term.

Computing: This half term, Year 2 will begin to work on algorithms and debugging in the computer suite using the computer programme ‘Scratch’.

English: During this half term we will be using Julia Donaldson’s The Snail and the Whale as our quality text. The Snail and the Whale is a picture book rich in rhyming language and is written from the perspective of the adventurous snail. We will be using the text alongside other whale related books to support our writing, where we will be focusing on non-chronological reports and letter writing. Grammar, spelling and punctuation work will also support the children's writing.

Science: Sound and Electricity : This series of lessons focuses on giving children an understanding of electricity, and how sound works. They will do a range of activities for effective and engaging learning through a variety of practical, hands on investigations.

Year 2 Half-term: Spring 1 Making Waves

Whole class reading: In our reading lessons, we will be continuing to read a range of fiction, non-fiction and poetry texts. We will be focusing on developing our retrieval and inference skills and building our knowledge of vocabulary.

Maths: In Maths this half term, we will begin looking at money including; identifying coins, making different amounts and giving and receiving amounts in pounds and pence. Following on from this we will be moving on to multiplication and division focussing more on the 2,5 and 10 times tables. We will then be looking at mental and written strategies such as multiplying and dividing with no exchange and with exchange. We will be finishing off with looking at fractions including halves, quarters and thirds.

PE: Working each week with WLSP, the children will continue to take part in striking or gymnastics lessons.

Music: In our Music lessons with Mr. Pritchard, we will be embracing the music of Chinese New Year through song and using the keyboards.

DT: The children will draw accurate diagrams with correct labels, arrows and explanations. They will correctly identify definitions for key terms. They will Identify five appropriate design criteria and create a finished ‘Moving Monster’ that fulfils the design brief.

RE: In RE, we will be learning about Judaism, with a specific focus on and how the Jewish community celebrate Shabbat and Sukkot.

Year 2 Half-term: Spring 1 Making Waves Computing: This half term, we are going to begin using the computer programme ‘Scratch’.

PSHE: In PSHE we are focussing on the unit; Being Responsible, covering topics such as practice makes perfect, helping someone in need and stealing.

History: This half term, we will be learning about the life and times of Christopher Columbus. We will be studying the journeys he took and following the routes across the continents and oceans we have learnt about in our Geography lessons.

English: In English, this half term, our quality text will be ‘The Bog Baby’. We will be creating story maps, collecting adventurous adjectives, writing descriptive sentences about the story and making a ‘Missing’ poster.

Our focus will be on handwriting, presentation and sentence structure.

Maths: In Maths this half term, we will be focussing on place value and deepening our understanding of numbers. We will consolidate, and build on concepts introduced in Year 1, including counting, ordering numbers, comparing numbers, and numbers as words.

Year 2 – Autumn 1: ‘Beastly Beings’ Science: Our Science unit this half term is animals and their habitats. Through our quality text we will look at a range of different habitats and discover why certain animals live there.

Art & Design and Design Technology: This area of the curriculum will be taught in the next half term.

PE: In PE, we will be developing our athletics skills through a range of structured activities. We will spend our sessions on the field with both our WLSP coach (Tuesday) and our class teacher (Monday).

History: This are of the curriculum will be taught during the next half term.

PSHE In our school, we follow the 1 decision scheme to teach our PSHE. Through PSHE, we see the children develop and grow – building positive relationships with their peers. This half term we will focus on feelings and emotions, including worry.

Geography: This half term our focus will be on geographical skills and language, using atlases and compass points, identifying continents and the key oceans Music: In Music this half term, we will be learning how to play the Djembe drums, practising a range of Autumn songs. In October, we will be visiting church for our Harvest festival assembly.

Computing: This half term, the children will be developing a range of basic computing skills and becoming more confident using IT.

RE: This half term our key question is: 1.4 How and why do we celebrate special and sacred times?

We will learn about which times are special and why, why festivals are important to religious communities and how people from religious and non-religious communities celebrate key festivals.

English: In English, this half term, our quality text will be ‘Traction Man’.

Through this we will be developing our descriptive writing and use of past and present tense.

Our class novel will be the ‘Christmasaurus’ by Tom Fletcher, this will also be a focus for our guided reading to develop our comprehension skills.

Science: Our Science unit this half term is materials, as part of this we will be planning and carrying out our own investigations on a range of materials.

We will also have a visit from Adrian and his travelling Science Show!

Maths: In Maths this half term, we will be focussing on addition, subtraction, time and shape. In addition and subtraction we will be developing key skills such as using the inverse to check our answers. In time we will be looking at o’clock and half past.

Year 2 – Autumn 2: ‘I need a hero!’

Art & Design and Design Technology: In our DT lessons we will be using our skills to build a chair for Traction Man, using a range of techniques to explore stability, strengthening materials and testing our finished product.

PE: In PE, we will be developing our athletics skills through a range of structured activities. We will spend our sessions on the field with both our WLSP coach (Tuesday) and our class teacher (Monday).

History: Through our History lessons, we will be learning about the life and times of Guy Fawkes. We will be exploring a range of historical enquiry skills to enhance our learning, such as role play and hot seating.

PSHE In our school, we follow the 1 decision scheme to teach our PSHE, we will also continue with our regular circle times.

In addition to this we will be looking at fire safety.

Geography: This area of the curriculum will be covered in the next half term.

Music: In Music this half term, we will be learning our Christmas songs for our class performance.

Computing: This half term, the children will begin to learn about word processing and developing our keyboard skills.

RE: This half term we will be learning all about the Christmas story and what it means to Christians, how Christians celebrate Christmas and the story of advent. We will also be joining our buddy classes in church for our Christmas assemblies.
