English:
In English, this half term, our quality text will be The Twits by Roald Dahl. We will be completing descriptive pieces of writing as a character from the story and retelling our favourite chapters. We will also be writing a recount of our exciting trip to Blackpool Zoo!

Maths:
In Maths this half term, we will start by learning all about Position and Direction, looking at key vocabulary such as Left and Right, Clockwise and Anti-clockwise. We will then move on to learning about Mass, Capacity and Temperature exploring these in fun, practical ways. In Number Ninja, we will continue refining our arithmetic skills and moving through the levels on our Maths Passports.
Science:
In Science we will be spending the half term consolidating on our learning from across the year. We will revisit minibeast habitats to discover if the creatures we find are different to our findings in Autumn and Spring. The children will further develop their understanding by ‘Working Scientifically’ and continue to apply their scientific understanding to a range of enquiry style questions.
Year 2 –
Art & Design and Design Technology:

In DT this half term we will be exploring a balanced diet. Through their exploration of what makes a balanced diet, children will taste test food combinations of different food groups aiming to find the perfect, healthy mix in an exciting, delicious wrap.
PE:
In PE this half term we will continue to have two sessions a week, one with our class teacher and one with our PE coach. We are continuing our learning of the fundamental movement skills and will look at:

History:
In History, we will begin our unit by developing our knowledge of what makes a significant, influential person. We will learn about three famous nurses from the past: Florence Nightingale, Mary Seacole and Edith Cavell before comparing their interesting lives and their contribution to modern day medicine.
Geography:
This area of the curriculum is taught in Autumn 1, Spring 2 and Summer 1.

PSHE
In PSHE we are going to be focusing on Living in Our World. We will begin to understand why we should look after things both inside and outside our homes and about keeping our communities clean. We will also begin to develop an appreciation of Money, looking at skills you may need in a future job and career, how to save money and the difference between wanting and needing.
Music: In Music this half term, we will be developing our breath control whilst learning to play the recorder. We will also explore pitch control and structures in music, building up to a solo performance.
Computing: This area of the curriculum is taught in Autumn 1, Autumn 2 and Spring 2.
RE:
Our key question this half term is:
How and Why do we celebrate special and sacred times?
We will be retelling well known stories from a range different religions that focus on celebrations and festivals. We will explore the religious meaning behind these events and why they matter to believers.
We will also be identifying similarities and differences between the celebrations studied and look at symbols and actions used.

Our Science unit this half term is called ‘animals including humans’. Throughout this unit, we are going to explore the basic needs of animals and humans, look at how animals and humans grow and change. We will also develop our understanding of the importance of a healthy diet and good hygiene.
Maths:
In Maths this half term, we will start by learning all about telling the time! We will look at how we know it is O’clock, half past, quarter to and quarter past before moving on to telling the time to 5 minute intervals. We will then spend the rest of the half term focusing on measures. In Number Ninja, we will continue refining our arithmetic skills.
Year 2 –

Summer 1: ‘Down Under’
Art & Design and Design Technology:
In Art this half term we will be continuing to explore drawing, using line, tone and texture and a wide range of materials to express our ideas as artists.
PE:
In PE this half term we will continue to have two sessions a week, one with our class teacher and one with our PE coach. We are continuing our learning of the fundamental movement skills and will look at:

In Geography, we will begin our unit by finding out more about the countries that make up the United Kingdom. We will then move on to looking close to home with a focus on Southport as a seaside resort. Following this, we will then compare and contrast our home town with Southport, Australia, identifying the key physical and human features.
History:
This area of the curriculum is taught in Autumn 1, Spring 2 and Summer 2.

Music:
In Music this half term, we will be looking at using different musical pulses and developing our percussive control. We will also continue learning to read music.
Computing:
We will be linking to our science by learning about the international space station to find out about humans survive and interpreting data.
PSHE
In PSHE we are going to be focusing on staying safe and spotting hazards around us. We will learn about Fire Safety and the importance of always being responsible in a range of different scenarios, including when we are faced with difficult decisions to make in our every day lives.
RE:
Our key question this half term is: What can we learn from Sacred books?
We will read different stories told in the Bible and suggest answers to questions which arise from these stories. We will also talk about issues of good and bad, right and wrong and how these are explored through religious stories.

Our learning will focus on the life processes of plants and during our visit to Botanic Gardens we will look at different types of plants and trees.
Maths:
In Maths this half term we will begin our learning about fractions, using our prior knowledge of division to help us find halves, thirds and quarters of length, shapes, set of objects and numbers. We will then move on to learning about time,comparing and sequencing intervals of time, telling and writing the time to five minutes, including quarter past/to the hour and draw the hands on a clock face to show these times.

In PE, we will be focussing on dance or functional movement skills. We will be developing our skills of hopping, skipping and sidestepping, and body control through a range of activities.
During dance sessions we will develop our skills independently before creating group dances.
Geography:
In Geography this half term, we will be developing our skills in map work and field work. As part of our learning, we will be undertaking field work in Botanic Gardens, looking for human and physical features. We will also be creating maps and symbols for our own ‘Barefoot Island’.
Music:
In Music this half term, we will be learning how to play the ukelele. During music lessons with Mr Pritchard the children will have the opportunity to play simple strumming patterns.
History: History will be studied in the Summer term.

English: During this half term we will be using Julia Donaldson’sThe Snail and the Whale as our quality text. The Snail and the Whale is a picture book rich in rhyming language and is written from the perspective of the adventuroussnail. We will be using the text alongside other whale related books to support our writing, where we will be focusing on non-chronologicalreports and letter writing. Grammar, spelling and punctuationwork will also support the children's writing.

Making Waves
Maths:
Science: Sound and Electricity : This series of lessons focuses on giving children an understandingof electricity, and how sound works. They will do a range of activities for effective and engaging learning through a variety of practical,hands on investigations.
Whole class reading: In our reading lessons, we will be continuingto read a range of fiction, non-fiction and poetry texts. We will be focusing on developingour retrieval and inference skills and buildingour knowledge of vocabulary.
In Maths this half term, we will begin looking at money including; identifying coins, making different amounts and giving and receiving amounts in pounds and pence. Followingon from this we will be moving on to multiplication and division focussing more on the 2,5 and 10 times tables. We will then be looking at mental and written strategies such as multiplyingand dividingwith no exchange and with exchange. We will be finishing off with looking at fractions includinghalves, quarters and thirds.
PE: Working each week with WLSP, the children will continueto take part in striking or gymnastics lessons.

Music: In our Music lessons with Mr. Pritchard, we will be embracing the music of Chinese New Year through song and using the keyboards.

Computing: This half term, we are going to begin using the computer programme ‘Scratch’.
DT: The children will draw accurate diagrams with correct labels, arrows and explanations.They will correctly identify definitions for key terms. They will Identify five appropriate design criteria and create a finished ‘Moving Monster’ that fulfils the design brief.
RE: In RE, we will be learning about Judaism, with a specific focus on and how the Jewish community celebrate Shabbatand Sukkot.
PSHE: In PSHE we are focussing on the unit; Being Responsible,covering topics such as practice makes perfect, helping someone in need and stealing.
History: This half term, we will be learning about the life and times of Christopher Columbus. We will be studying the journeys he took and following the routes across the continents and oceans we have learnt about in our Geography lessons.

In English, this half term, our quality text will be ‘The Bog Baby’. We will be creating story maps, collecting adventurousadjectives, writing descriptive sentences about the story and making a ‘Missing’ poster. Our focus will be on handwriting, presentationand sentence structure.

Our class novel will be the ‘Christmasaurus’ by Tom Fletcher, this will also be a focus for our guided reading to develop our comprehension skills.

Our Science unit this half term is materials, as part of this we will be planning and carrying out our own investigationson a range of materials. We will also have a visit from Adrian and his travelling Science Show!
Year 2 – Autumn 2: ‘I need a hero!’
Art & Design and Design Technology:
In our DT lessons we will be using our skills to build a chair for Traction Man, using a range of techniques to explore stability, strengthening materials and testing our finished product.
Maths:
In Mathsthis half term, we will be focussing on addition, subtraction, time and shape. In addition and subtraction we will be developing key skills such as using the inverse to check our answers. In time we will be looking at o’clock and half past.
PE:
In PE, we will be developing our athletics skills througha range of structuredactivities. We will spend our sessions on the field with both our WLSP coach (Tuesday) and our class teacher (Monday).

History: Through our History lessons, we will be learning about the life and times of Guy Fawkes. We will be exploring a range of historical enquiry skills to enhance our learning, such as role playand hot seating.
