Year 2

Half-term: Autumn 1 (W/C Monday 2nd September 2024– W/C Monday 21st October 2024)

In Year 2, we believe that homework should consolidate the learning that has taken place in school and inform families of the children’s learning as they share this knowledge with you at home.

To support this, please choose and complete 6 activities from the grid over the course of the half-term. Please can your child bring this in every Thursday so it can be celebrated in class on a Friday Work can be completed in homework books or, where appropriate, brought in its original form e.g. a photograph or poster etc.

We teach the children to take pride and responsibility for their own work and we strive to develop their independence, therefore we expect each homework task to be completed with care and to the best of their ability.

Our weekly homework offer in Year 2 includes:

1. Curriculum Menu

2. Reading- please continue to aim to read with your child at least 3 times a week.

3. Maths - we would also like your child to continue to practise their maths at home, focusing on counting in steps of 2s, 5s and 10s. You could use your child’s Maths passport to help with this. Your child will be practising their ‘Maths passport’ twice weekly. These will be sent home during the week.

4. Focus words - we would like your child to practise their ‘red words’. Red words are common exception words – this means they are words that don’t always follow the usual phonics patterns when we read & spell these words We will put our focus words inside your child’s reading records every week so they can practise reading & spelling these words at home. In class, we will learn to read and spell these words together throughout the week.

We can’t wait to see your work!

Thank you so much for your continued support!

Your Year 2 Team

English:

Have a look at your local area and see if you can use lots of different adjectives (describing words) to describe them, such as a wood, the beach, the fields or even your own back garden. Using these adjectives, can you write some sentences. Don’t forget to use a capital letter, finger spaces and full stops.

Maths:

Have a look at 2-digit numbers such as 27, 19 etc and say how many ‘tens’ and ‘ones’ there are in that number. Objects from around the home like buttons, dried pasta shapes, marbles, or pencils are great to practise counting and organising numbers. For example, ’34’ could be represented by 34 marbles arranged into three groups of ten and four ones.

Spanish:

Practise saying hello (Hola), and goodbye (adios) with your friends and family. You could also ask someone what is your name? (¿Como te llamas?) and How are you? (¿Como estas?)

PSHE: What kind things can you say to a friend or family member?

Can you write down, in sentences, the types of things you could say to make someone feel happy?

RE:

Can you research 4 facts about either, the Bible, the Torah or the Qur’an?

Can you make a fact file with your findings?

Science:

Choose your favourite animal and draw a detailed picture of their habitat. Can you label your habitat?

Children’s choice:

Share something you have learnt at home! Maybe you could do some baking, crafting or go on an outing somewhere.

Geography:

Can you research a hot country and a cold country and compare the following:

• Where are they in the world?

• What is the weather like?

• What types of animals live there?

• What types of plants live there?

Design and Technology:

Can you make a strong structure that can hold 4 big books? You could use Lego, card or anything of your choice, but do be careful!
