Reception
Half-Term: Summer 1
Theme: People Who Help Us!
In EYFS, we believe that this is the start of our journey, where we build relationships with yourselves as a family. As part of this relationship, we have provided a new ‘menu’ of suggested learning activities for your child to complete with you during this half term. These activities can be brought back into school and shared as part of our ‘show and tell’ sessions, where we encourage children to communicate in front of their peers as part of our drive to improve children’s speaking and listening at an early age. These activities are aimed at supporting your child’s learning and development in school.
In addition to the homework bingo, Children in Reception will also bring a library book each week to share at home with an adult. As you will appreciate, reading is fundamental to a child’s progress in all areas of the curriculum! Therefore, we expect all children to read with an adult a minimum three times per week. Reception children will also bring a reading book home once they have learnt the first set of sounds. This will be a sound blending book and will match the sounds they have already been taught in school. Children should read this book daily to an adult at home. Once they can read this book confidently, they will move onto the next book.
We can’t wait to see your work!
Shape Hunt!
Understanding shape helps us to make sense of the world around us. Go on a shape hunt around your house. See if you can find circles, squares, rectangles or triangles.
Puppet Show
Can you make a shadow puppet at home? What different shapes/animals can you make? Can you make a puppet show to tell a story with your puppet?
People Who Help Us!
Look at your community and see what people help you and how they help you. Can you choose someone in your community to draw a picture of?
Write a sentence to say what they do to help us!
Fabulous Phonics:
We have now learnt most of our Set 1 Phonics Sounds! Use the phonics mat below to practise your sounds. Can you draw a picture to go with some of the sounds?
Can you find objects in your house which have these sounds in them?
Construction!
Build models using your imagination, encourage your child to talk about their plan e.g. what are you going to build, how will you begin, what do you need to do next? If they encounter a problem or their work is not going as planned, question them – what has gone wrong, why do you think it has happened, what could you do differently?
Rhyming Bingo!
Lots of the stories the children are exploring this half-term all have rhyme within them. Using the attached worksheet, can the children pair up the rhyming words together. Extra points for anybody who can come up with their own examples of words that rhyme!
Scissor Skills
Help to develop fine motor muscles. Have long strips of paper available and draw a mixture of pattern lines on them (wavy, zigzag, straight). Invite children to cut along the lines to complete the pattern.
Role Play!
Make believe – dress up or take on different roles in play. Set up a café, a restaurant, a shop, play doctors, dentists, schools and teachers! Use props from around your home to enhance the play e.g. tins of food, coins/money. Explore different occupations and their importance in our society/lives.
Children’s Choice:
Do you have your own Homework idea linked to a topic of your choice? Extra points for creativity!
