Personal, Social & Emotional Development: This half term we will place a large focus on transition and supporting our older children through discussions, visits and stories. We will talk about feelings and emotions around periods of change. We will continue to focus on resolving conflicts with peers and gaining confidence through friendships.
Physical Development: Children will continue to practise their fine motor skills, focussing on scissor skills and pencil control with a focus on developing a comfortable grip. We will spend time outdoors with lots of opportunities to support the children in developing gross motor skills. West Lancashire Coaches take PE twice a week.
Literacy: We will enjoy sharing a range of books including Supertato and The Colour Monster starts school. In phonics some children will continue to recognise and write initial sounds. We will play games to focus on hearing these sounds in words and focus on orally blending words as well as exposing children to rhyme. We will continue to place a greater emphasis on name writing.
Maths: Continuing with matching a set of objects to their numeral with lots of exposure to counting forwards and backwards. Children will be considering what comes before an after a number and looking at how numbers can be made. They will also revisit 2D shape and repeating patterns.
Nursery Summer 2: People who help us /Transition
Understanding the world: Children will learn about Florence Nightingale and modern day doctors. Children will use sand and water play to explore weights and measure as well as care for the plants in our garden. Our baking sessions enable children to explore, identify and describe how ingredients change.
Communication & Language: Children will talk with adults and friends, one to one and in small groups. Children will be encouraged to take part in Show & Tell with a focus on using longer sentences. We will continue to place an emphasis on developing children’s vocabulary and understanding of ‘why’ questions.

Expressive Arts: Small world and role play areas are continuously available, children always have access to the home corner. Additional role-play opportunities will include a doctors surgery and dressing up area. We will continue to provide opportunities for children to explore a variety of art and craft projects.
RE: Use opportunities, such as charity days, to discuss similarities and differences between countries and/or cultures.
Personal, Social & Emotional Development: Supporting the children in developing appropriate ways of being assertive. Children to work on talking to each other to resolve conflicts, with the support of an adult. Children to continue to talk about their feelings.
Maths: Continuing with matching a set of objects to their written numeral. Lots of exposure to counting forwards and backwards. Use positional language, e.g next to, behind, above. Children will look at directions and describe a familiar route.
Understanding the world: We will continue looking at life cycles and developing their understanding of seasonal changes. Children will be planting and caring for plants in our outside environment.
Physical Development: Making the most of good weather to develop gross motor skills through moving and playing outdoors. Children to be encouraged to being increasingly independent as they get dressed and undressed. West Lancashire Coaches take PE twice a week.
Nursery Summer 1: Growing
Literacy: We will enjoy sharing many books including Jack and the Beanstalk. We will be developing the children’s phonological awareness through looking at rhyme, syllables and initial sounds. Children will be supporting in using print and letter knowledge in their writing.
Communication & Language: Children to talk with adults and friends, one to one and in small groups. Children to be encouraged to develop their tenses and plurals, and where possible use longer sentences.
Children to listen to longer stories and work on remembering the story plots.
Expressive Arts: Small world and role play areas are available at all times. Drama and role play will be enhanced through the stage area in Nursery. Children will look at adding more detail when drawing faces and bodies. Through helicopter stories, the children will begin to invent their own narratives.

To play with one or more other children, extending and elaborating play ideas. To support children to find solutions to conflicts and rivalries.
Physical Development: To spend time outdoors using the balance bikes and scooters. PE with large equipment to develop core strength and shoulder stability to promote good fine motor control as well as regular sessions of Dough Disco and Squiggle whilst you wiggle. Use one handed tools and equipment, for example, making snips in paper with scissors.
Maths: To learn how we can count and represents numbers 6-7 and explore length, height, mass and capacity through adult led and exploratory activities and play.
Understanding the world:Begin to make sense of their own life story and family history. Children to share their family traditions and routines. To look for signs of the changing seasons and create maps related to text and our local community.
Literacy: To enjoy sharing multiple books daily, and to explore quality texts including We’re Going on a bear hunt, Brown Bear, Brown Bear, Billys Bucket and Duck in a Truck. To develop the children’s phonological awareness, so that they can spot and suggest rhymes, count or clap syllables in words and begin to recognise words with the same initial sound and to begin to introduce the RWI phonic scheme and begin writing some letters correctly.
Communication & Language: Children to talk with adults and friends, one to one and in small groups and developing a wider range of vocabulary. Encouraging them to listen to longer stories and begin to show an understanding of what has happened and talk about the story.
Expressive Arts: To join different materials and explore different textures. Using role play to create and recreate narratives from their own lives and stories.

Personal, Social & Emotional Development:
To develop their sense of responsibility and membership of the Early Years school community. Children will learn the names of staff in our building and the main school, like the head, deputy head and assistant head teachers. To understand the importance of healthy food and drink choices, activity and toothbrushing.
Physical Development: To spend time outdoors using the balance bikes and scooters. PE with large equipment to develop core strength and shoulder stability to promote good fine motor control as well as regular sessions of Dough Disco and Squiggle whilst you wiggle.
Maths: To learn how we can count and represents numbers 3-5 as well as subitising. We will sing simple number songs to practise counting 1-5 both forwards and backwards as well as encourage children to attempt to write the numeral.
Understanding the world: To explore and talk about the different forces they feel and explore winter. Children will learn about their home address and local landmarks in Churchtown.
Nursery Spring 1:
Once upon a time

Literacy: To enjoy sharing multiple books daily, including traditional fairy tales. To develop the children’s phonological awareness, so that they can spot and suggest rhymes, count or clap syllables in words and begin to recognise words with the same initial sound. Children will continue to practise writing their own names.
Communication & Language: Children to talk with adults and friends, one to one and in small groups and developing a wider range of vocabulary. Encouraging them to listen to longer stories and begin to show an understanding of what has happened and talk about the story.
Expressive Arts: Small world and role play areas are available at all times. Children will have access to a variety of junk to create models using their own ideas.
RE: To learn about the festivals of Chinese New Year and the beginning of Lent.

To talk about the different feelings and emotions as the children begin to settle in to Nursery. To support the children grow in confidence to leave their carers and enjoy their nursery experiences.
Maths: Learning how we can match shapes and objects using colour, size and shape. The children will sing simple math songs to practise their counting.

Nursery Autumn 1: All about me
Literacy: We will enjoy sharing multiple books daily, including The Colour Monster and The Little Red Hen. The children will be introduced to the different parts of a book and how we hold and use them. We will use listening games to develop the children’s listening skills and using their own voices to replicate sounds.
Communication & Language: Children to spend time in smaller key worker groups to develop their confidence to talk with adults and friends. Encouraging them to talk about their families as well as listen to stories and talk about them.
Expressive Arts: Small world and role play areas are available at all times. Adults will model and support children as they explore these areas. Children will be encouraged to join in with a range of actions and rhyme songs and various craft activities.

Nursery Autumn 2: Let’s celebrate
Understanding the world: We will explore the history of bonfire night and Remembrance day as well as sharing our ow family traditions. Children will bake on a regular basis and explore how mixtures and ingredients change after baking.
Literacy: We will enjoy sharing multiple books daily, including The Rainbow Fish and Dear Zoo. We will be developing the children’s knowledge of the different parts of a book, identifying rhymes and clapping syllables in their own and others names. Children will begin to practise writing their own names.
Communication & Language: Children to talk with adults and friends, one to one and in small groups and developing a wider range of vocabulary. Encouraging them to listen to longer stories and begin to show an understanding of what has happened and talk about the story.
Expressive Arts: Small world and role play areas are available at all times. Children will be encouraged to join in with a range of actions and rhyme songs in preparation for the Christmas show.
