“Imagination is more important than knowledge. Knowledge is limited. Imagination encircles the world.”

Activities in Reception are carefully planned and organised to give your child a wide variety of learning experiences. Children are taught as a whole class, in small groups, and individually. Much of their learning takes place in child led play, in our indoor and outdoor environments, sensitively supported by the adults in the classroom.
Planning for each half term is flexible, often guided by a quality text or storybook, and is focused around the needs and interests of the children.
• This booklet is to help inform our staff of your child’s interests. You will find it in your pack.
• Teachers will use the information the photos and pictures you send in to enhance the classroom and develop our home and school together displays.
• Please complete the activities in the booklet with your child during the summer and return it to school in September.
• During the Reception year, Early Years staff will complete a personalised and unique learning journey for your child, which you can access from home.
• Staff will add photos and observations, and suggest opportunities and next steps for your child’s learning. You can also add your own photographs at home to share with us and allow us to build a complete picture of your child’s growth and development during their first year at school.
• There is a letter to complete in the Reception pack. Please complete this and return to your child’s class teacher before leaving the meeting this evening, then we can get you set up, and allow us to begin communicating with you straight away
• We are looking to add to our team of Reading Angels who come into class and support the children with reading. This year we would like to extend this to working with children on gardening, baking, school trips and visits to the local area.
• If you are interested in helping, and can spare a bit of time regularly each week, please speak to a member of the Early Years Team.
• You will need to have a DBS check to comply with safeguarding procedures in school. Our friendly operations manager, Mrs Pearce will support you with this.
Please, clearly label every item with your child’s name

• We are very fortunate to have our own team of chefs at Churchtown who create interesting and varied dishes for your children to enjoy.
• Reception children eat in the Early Years Hall. Each class have their own lunchtime assistant. Lunch is provided by the school free of charge.
• Children can choose a hot dinner or something from the deli bar.
• How do I order school meals?
• In your welcome to reception pack you will have seen a 3 week menu for school dinners. Our kitchen is run by our own in house catering team. We have a 3 week cycle for meals.
• My child has dietary needs what do I do?
• Our amazing kitchen staff are used to catering for any number of dietary needs. If you think of anything specific then please speak to your child’s class teacher or Mrs Patten (lunchtime co-Ordinator) and we will discuss with the kitchen.
• If the request is due to a medical issue/allergy please make sure you provide with a copy of the doctors/NHS letter.
• How much do school dinners cost?
• If your child is in Reception, Year 1 or Year 2 then they are entitled to a free school meal. This has nothing to do with pupil premium (next slide). When your child gets to year 3 if they are not pupil premium you will then be charged £2.35 per meal. If they are pupil premium they will still be entitled to a free school meal
• Any other questions?
• If you have any questions please feel free to speak to any of the staff.
• What are the benefits of claiming free school meals?
• School meals are a good way to ensure that your child eats well at lunchtime, and they can also save you time and money. Claiming free school meals also helps the school. We get extra funding, known as the ‘pupil premium’, for every eligible pupil who is registered.
• What is the pupil premium?
• The pupil premium grant is funding provided to schools to help all pupils reach their full potential, regardless of their background or financial situation.
• How is the pupil premium funding used?
• The pupil premium is not used to pay for school meals. Schools use the funding to improve the attainment of pupils who are eligible.
• How can I ensure the school gets the funding?
• The more eligible pupils that are registered for free school meals, the more funding the school receives. Registering does not mean your child has to take up free school meals if they don’t want to. You should still register for free school meals even if:
• Your child already receives universal infant free school meals
• You would rather your child had a different meal, such as a packed lunch
• Please contact the Schools Support Section via Sefton Council on 0151 934 3263 who will check your eligibility.
• We have a breakfast club which runs daily, Monday –Friday from 7.308.40am. The price is £3.75 per day. Please speak to operations manager Mrs Pearce, to find out more details and book your place for September
• Little Buds is our after school care club for our nursery and reception children only. This runs daily, Monday-Friday form 3.10-5.55pm. The price is £10 per day. Please speak to Mrs Pearce to find out more details and book your space for September
• Your child has been allocated a date and time for their transition visit ( week beginning 3rd July) to meet their class teacher and some of their class mates. Your date and time is in your pack.
• All children will start school full time on Wednesday 6th September 2023 at 8.50am
