We use a topic to create awe and wonder through many of our subjects.
Maths:
To start Year 5, the children will be exploring numbers up to 1,000,000. Children will learn to read, write, compare, order and partition these much larger numbers! We will then recap the written methods for addition and subtraction and apply our skills to a larger number range, before delving into the realms of multiples, factors, prime numbers, square numbers and cube numbers before October halfterm.
Science:
This half-term, our topic is ‘Forces’. The children will learn about the concept of gravity and how it acts a force between the Earth and falling objects. After that, the children will identify the effects of air resistance, water resistance and friction, that act between moving surfaces. We will also be learning about key scientists, such as Isaac Newton and how he developed the theory of gravitation.
Art:
In this collection of lessons, the children will learn and develop their skills in retro-futurism. The children will be able to explain what this is by the end of the unit. This is all about revisiting the 1950s and 60s to see what they thought the future would be like. They will be producing a collagraph using printing techniques.
English:
We will be using the quality text 'Malamander' by Thomas Taylor to write a range of genres this half term. We will be identifying the features of exemplar texts and then applying this when writing a range of texts including character descriptions, setting descriptions and poetry.
Our grammar lessons will focus on features that need to be included in each piece of writing and a wider range of punctuation will also be taught. Spelling and handwriting will also be a key focus.
PE: In P.E this half term, the children will be having lessons in athletics or swimming.
RE:
In RE we will be exploring the question 'Why do some people believe God exists?.' We will define the terms theist, atheist and agnostic and outline a Christian, Muslim and Jewish understanding of what God is like. We will present different views on why people believe in God or not.
Geography: In Geography, we will be using the 8 points of a compass and using 4 and 6-figure grid references. The children will be using symbols and keys on a map to build their knowledge of the U.K.
Computing:
Music:
During this half term, we will be rehearsing our songs to perform in the harvest festival celebration in St. Cuthbert's Church. In addition, we will be learning and practising our songs in preparation for our 'Young Voices' concert.
Year 5 – Autumn 1
Spanish:
This half term's Spanish unit is Presenting Myself / Me presento. We will learn to count up to 50 in Spanish. We will also ask somebody how they are feeling, their age, name and where they live. In addition, we will learn how to say how we are feeling, how old we are, what our name is and where we live. We will apply rules of adjectival agreement when saying our nationality.
During this half term, our topic is Online Safety. We will understand how apps can access our personal information and how to alter the permissions. We will learn to be aware of the positive and negative aspects of online communication and understand how online information can be used to form judgements. We will discover ways to overcome bullying and understand how technology can affect health and wellbeing.
PSHE:
PSHE: During this half term in PSHE, the children will be learning about the difference between a fixed mindset and a growth mindset. They will also be exploring feelings and emotions.
MalamanderIn our school, we follow the 1 decision scheme to teach our PSHE. Through PSHE, we see the children develop and grow – building positive relationships with their peers. Our school values are discussed often.
During our PSHE lessons in Year 5, we will explore: feelings & emotions, peer pressure, inclusion & acceptance, the concept of ‘Enterprise’ and we will begin to talk about puberty.
This year, Year 5’s ‘Relationships, Health and Sex Education Week’ will be w/c 18th March 2024. Prior to this week, parents will be informed of the arrangements/content via letter or Parent Workshop.
As the children enter upper KS2, we continue to encourage the children to become more independent in their learning, whilst also taking ownership of their belongings and items needed for school (e.g. homework/reading journal).
Children are encouraged to take pride in all that they do and pay particular attention to their presentation of their work!
We promote a ‘Growth Mindset’ to all that we do. Children are encouraged to embrace challenge and understand that ‘failure is something that helps us learn’.
