Year 3

Half-term: Summer 1

In Year 3, we believe that homework should consolidate the learning that has taken place in school and engage the children to share this new knowledge with their families. The activities chosen below are directly relevant to the Year 3 curriculum in school

Please choose and complete at least 6 activities from the grid over the course of the half-term. Homework can be recorded in the homework book or brought into school in any other form (photos, posters etc) where appropriate. We teach the children to take pride and responsibility for their own work, therefore we expect each homework task to be completed with care and to the best of your ability.

As part of our weekly homework offer in Year 3:

1. Please continue to aim to read with your child at least 3 times a week.

2. We would also like your child to continue to practise their times tables at home

3. To support with our reading and writing work in school, we will now start to send home each week a spelling rule and linked words so you are aware of what is being covered as part of our work in school. This rule will be taught and practised throughout the following week in school and we wanted to send this home so, where possible, children can practise this at home. Children will have the chance to learn, practise and apply this rule in class through a range of activities and quizzes as part of our RWI spelling programme.

Thank you for your continued support.

English – dialogue

This half term we are focusing on writing dialogue. Can you write a conversation between a superhero and a villain? Or you can make up your own characters if you prefer.

Sculpture

In art we are focussing on 3D art and sculptures. Research famous sculptures in the UK and create a fact file or information poster about your chosen sculpture. Here are a couple of famous sculptures to help get you started:

Angel of the North Another Place

Lambananas

The Kelpies

Strike!

Our PE unit this half term is striking and fielding games. Can you make up your own game to play? You must include striking and fielding skills. Write instructions about how to play your game. Have a go at playing it with friends and family.

Reading

Design your own book cover and create a blurb for the back of your cover. Have a look at examples of blurbs and front covers from books you have at home to inspire you.

Fraction Sundae

PHSE

In PHSE we are looking at our planet and how humans can help look after our world. What do you do to help recycle at home or in our community? You could do a beach or park clean to help our local community. You could create a poster or leaflet to encourage people to recycle at home.

Science

This half term in science we are learning about light and shadows. Can you find different light sources in your house? You could make a list, draw pictures or take photos. Write down where in your house you have found your different light sources.

Fraction Sundae

Create and decorate your own fraction sundae! Use a variety of flavours to create your sundae by colouring in the ice cream template and then cut and stick them onto the dish. You then need to write down what fraction of your sundae each flavour is. Challenge yourself by adding toppings such as cherries or sprinkles and write down what fraction of your sundae is decorated in each topping!

Money, money, money!

Later this half term in Maths we are looking at money. Ask an adult at home to show you the different coins and notes. Practise counting money where possible. When you go to the shops, work out what you could buy with £1, £5 or £10. Find out how many ways you can make £1. What’s the smallest amount of coins you can use? What’s the largest amount of coins?

Shadows

Draw a shadow picture. Use a torch or the sunlight to cast the shadow and then draw around it. Colour and label it. Or you could make a shadow puppet and put on a performance for someone at home!
