This week is the final week for many in our Churchtown family. Year 6 have had a fun packed final week in school. This started with an amazing show at The Atkinson last Friday, an emotive leaver service on Thursday and an amazing festival on Thursday afternoon. We wish all in year 6 well in their next steps. Please do come back to say hello. We also have some staff who we say goodbye to, details are further down this newsletter. We thank them all for everything they have contributed to Churchtown over the years.
Thank you to all of our families for your support over the year. We are truly proud of all our children and this is something that you all as families support us with over the years. I hope you all enjoy a restful summer break that is most certainly well deserved. I look forward to seeing you all again in September.

As the school year draws to a close we would like to wish the following staff good luck as they move on to pastures new: -

Mrs Armitage began working at Churchtown Primary School in June 1998 starting as a teaching assistant, being a key adult for a specific child. Mrs Armitage has continued to support both individuals and class groups in her role as TA and has worked from Reception through to Year 6. Mrs Armitage has worked alongside many teachers in the school, teaching small groups throughout the school day. She is always keen to learn new skills to support different age groups and subjects. With being an experienced TA, Mrs Armitage has successfully helped mentor new staff in TA roles at Churchtown. Thank you for all your support to the school in the 25 years you have been here Mrs Armitage!
Mrs Ascroft began working at Churchtown Primary School in September 2000 as a class teacher in reception. Mrs Ascroft has taught in early years and key stage one during her time at Churchtown but worked with children across the whole school in her role as counsellor as well as leading on the amazing work she has done with our Chipmunk children. Alongside Mrs Coysh, together they created Chipmunks supporting children who are affected by grief and those children who are young carers, their work being recognised in Sefton as one of the first of these groups to be started. This led them to support other Sefton schools in this invaluable area. Mrs Ascroft’s impact has been far reaching and has required time, dedication and constant review of her own knowledge around mental health, bereavement and counselling. We wish her well in her continued work as a private counsellor in schools and her own private practise.

Mrs MacGregor began working at Churchtown Primary School in September 2005 and has taught throughout the majority of the year groups as well as being a subject leader in geography and having a very keen interest in mental health for both adults and children. Mrs MacGregor’s new role, which she starts in September, is a teacher of visually impaired children based in Sefton. She is taking a wealth of experience with her and that, coupled with new training, will ensure she carries on being an exceptional practitioner, just as she has been during her time at Churchtown. You have been a joy to work with Mrs MacGregor and I am sure that is echoed by children, parents and staff alike.
Mrs Evans began working at Churchtown Primary School in September 2005 and has centred her teaching experience around year 2, but has also taught in year 1 and 3. Mrs Evans is a champion of every child she has taught and she ensures she stays invested in their pathway whilst at Churchtown. Mrs Evans has always maintained the importance of building strong working relationships with parents. She has been a subject leader and year group leader, as well as being a moderator for the Local Authority for many years, working in all primaries across Sefton, which ultimately has impacted positively on her work at Churchtown. We wish Mrs Evans well in her new adventure as teacher at Newfield Primary School.
Mrs Duncan began working at Churchtown Primary School in September 2006 and has taught in most year groups from year 2 to year 6 as well as being English subject leader. Mrs Duncan is meticulous in her detail as a teacher, ensuring the highest of standards for all children she has taught. Mrs Duncan is exceptionally inclusive with both staff and children and prides herself on keeping parents fully informed of the success of the children in her care. Mrs Duncan is leaving the teaching profession to be a legal clerk for the Crown Prosecution Service. We know you will be fabulous in your new role but you will be truly missed, not just at Churchtown but in the teaching profession. Good luck Mrs Duncan!

Mrs Draper began working at Churchtown Primary School in September 2016 and during her 6 years has taught in KS2 as well as being a year group leader. Mrs Draper’s passion for English and Maths has shone through since she started with one of many examples being the very successful book clubs she has ran for children. Mrs Draper is a champion for creating meaningful first-hand experiences for children, helping them to build their knowledge and experience for the future. More recently, her interest in children’s mental health and wellbeing has come more apparent and has led her to her new role working for Sefton with children at home with mental health issues. We wish you all the best in your new role!

Miss King began working at Churchtown Primary School in June 2021, prior to being a teaching student and doing her placement at Churchtown. Miss King initially did her placement in KS1 but has taught in Year 5 as a qualified teacher, whilst at Churchtown. Miss King has also led on singing and drama at after school clubs, which the children have thoroughly enjoyed as well as being part of coordinating the school’s participation in the Meols Cop dance festival this year. Miss King is going to work as a class teacher in the upper school at Merefield Primary School. Good luck in your new role Miss King!
Mrs Moran began working at Churchtown Primary School in September 2022 and has worked as SENDCo alongside Mrs Sutton, Assistant to the SENDCo. Mrs Moran brought lots of experience to the role at Churchtown and has supported SEND children and their families really well during the year. Alongside this, Mrs Moran has worked closely with staff delivering training and in-class support. It has been exceptionally pleasing to see the growth and development in this area in school. We will carry on all the hard work that has been implemented as Mrs Moran departs to pastures new. We wish Mrs Moran the best of luck in her new role as Director of SEND with the Pope Francis Academy.

On Friday 7th July 2023 our Year 6 pupils took to the main stage at The Atkinson to perform one last time together as a year group. The performance was ‘Pirates of the Curry Bean’.

It was anchors away as the crew set sail for swashbuckling pirate adventure on the high seas in this piratical musical. Young twins Jack & Liza Periwinkle yearn for adventure, so imagine their joy at discovering a real-life treasure map! But when the infamous Redbeard and his pungent Pirates of the Curry Bean steal the map and kidnap their mother, the race is on to rescue her, reclaim the map and find the treasure! Accompanied by their faithful cat Fiddlesticks, the twins join a mad admiral and his crazy crew on a voyage of adventure that takes them from Old London Docks to the mysterious island of Lumbago in the sea of Sciatica! Will they be first to find the treasure chest, or is a surprise awaiting them that's even better than gold?

After months of rehearsals, there was laughter, singing and tears as the performance drew to a close – and what a fantastic night for all involved. It was such a special note for Year 6 to end their journeys at Churchtown on! We are immensely proud of all that our pupils have achieved and we wish them all the very best of luck in their next steps – the door is always open!

We have said a sad farewell to our fantastic Year 6 pupils today. They sang emotive songs during their leavers’ service at St. Cuthbert’s Church, to celebrate their time at Churchtown. For lots of families, this is the end of an era. We wish them all well at high school and beyond and look forward to hearing about their future successes.

The children all received a leavers’ certificate and a personalised keyring to commemorate their time with us. We also awarded prizes to the children in the table below – well done to all of them!

“We started out as branches of a seedling oak tree, over the years we grew tougher but now it’s time to break free.
Just as acorns fall, we will make our own way, but in our hearts and our roots, Churchtown will stay”.
