Welcome back to the start of the summer term! The children look super smart in their summer uniform! Please remember that the expectation for children with long hair is that it is tied back and for those who have their ears pierced, children can wear one plain stud in each earlobe. Children can wear watches, except for smart watches. Thank you for your consideration and support with school uniform.

There is lots to celebrate in this week’s newsletter with the Sefton Beach clean-up prior to the holidays, the Chief Champions representing the school this week at the service for Private Richard George Masters RASC VC at St Cuthbert’s Church and the fantastic news of the football team winning the Southport schools football shield. Well done to all involved!

We are having constant issues currently with parking around school, this is causing numerous complaints from residents. We have had parents also contact school this week, concerned about how other parents are parking and alerting school to this. Please be mindful when you are parking around school for drop-off and pick-up times. Have a lovely weekend – Mrs Payne.

BIKE SECURITY AT CHURCHTOWN PRIMARY SCHOOL

We are really pleased at Churchtown Primary School that so many of our children choose to cycle to school each day as it is a mode of transport that has multiple benefits for their health and wellbeing. We would like to remind those children that do cycle to school of the following:

Safety:

We strongly advise that students wear a helmet to and from school and at all times that they are cycling.

Bike Security:

All children cycling to school are required to use the designated bike zone within school to ensure the safety of the bikes. It is advised that the bike is accompanied with a lock and is secured in school, especially in unforeseen circumstances when the bike may be left at school overnight.

Thank you for your co-operation.

Eco Team, parents/carers & families –Southport Beach Clean Up

On Saturday 1st April, some members of the Eco team, along with other Churchtown families, carried out a Beach Clean-Up with Green Sefton. This is part of the Keep Britain Tidy, Great British Spring Clean. They collected upwards of ten bags of rubbish, mainly containing plastic items from Southport beach.

The Eco team wanted to focus on Marine and Recycling as part of their action plan. The children were interested in taking part in a beach clean litter pick up, so an opportunity with Green Sefton came along and they seized the opportunity to make it happen.

Thank you for making a difference to our local community and a difference to our planet!

Private Richard George Masters RASC VC Headstone Renewal Ceremony

Monday 17th April 2023

Churchtown Primary School were invited to pay their respects as a new headstone was unveiled in tribute to one of the greatest war heroes of the First World War at St. Cuthbert’s Church, Churchtown, Southport

Private Richard George Masters, from Southport, was awarded a Victoria Cross when he saved the lives of 200 wounded British Army soldiers on 9th April 1918.

He had signed up aged 42 alongside his brothers to fight in the war. An injury to his hand meant he was unable to use a rifle, so he joined the Royal Army Service Corps (RASC) attached to 141 Field Ambulance.

He carried out his act of huge bravery at a place known to the British Army Tommies as ‘Hell Fire Corner’ near Bethune in France – the only person to get through to rescue the stricken soldiers despite the area being machine gunned, shelled and bombed by an aircraft.

Private Richard George Masters survived the war and lived until he was 86 years old, dying on the 4th April 1963. He was buried in the cemetery at St. Cuthbert’s Church, Churchtown, Southport alongside his beloved wife, Alice, who died on the 17th June 1943 aged 65.

PARKING AROUND SCHOOL

DROP OFF/COLLECTION OF CHILDREN

Churchtown Primary School is situated on residential roads and we respectfully ask parents to park legally and with due consideration for our neighbours and others. It is never acceptable to think that blocking someone’s driveway is OK for a short period of time.

In addition, we are currently receiving a high number of complaints from other parents who are dropping off/collecting their child/ren. Parents are often double parking which results in cars not being able to pass, thus creating a bottle neck down Sunny Road and onto Cambridge Road.

The ‘drop-off zone’ is to be used to ‘drop-off’ your child/ren outside of the school building. It is not to be used for parking up and walking your child/ren into the school premises.

Please remember to park away from the school and walk or cycle whenever possible, it makes a huge difference to the safety of the children coming to and from school and makes the school run a better experience for all.

We will continue with our staff presence outside the school building to remind parents of their parking obligations where required.

Thank you in advance for your cooperation in keeping Churchtown children and families safe.

New School Lunchtime Menu

We are excited to be rolling out a new school dinner menu from next week, the week commencing the 24th of April

Our fantastic new menu can be found below, with a wide range of delicious food on offer. These menus rotate each Monday during the half term. You can opt for your child to enjoy school dinners on specific days during the week, depending on what their firm favourites are.

School meals cost £2.35 per day, payable in advance (total of £11.75 per week). We are a cashless school so all parents/carers can pay for all school means online via our ParentPay website. Please contact the school office if you require further support with this (either by calling 01704 508500 or via email office@churchtown.org.uk).

Please note, for next week, the menu can also be found opposite (Thursday’s meal differs to the new menu as stated).

New Menu W/C 24th April Week 1 Week 2 Week 3

This weekend, on Sunday 23 April at 3.00pm, there will be a national test of the UK Emergency Alert Mobile phones (and possibly some tablets) will sound and you will hear a loud siren-like sound and vibration for up to 10 seconds. A message will appear on the screen and you must acknowledge it before you can use other features on the device. Only the government and the emergency services will be able to send them and only in the circumstances that are outlined.

The government does not need to know your phone number or location to send you an alert. Here is a link to the UK government website and another link to the Newsround piece which is very informative but also user friendly.

The survivors of domestic abuse often use a secret phone that is hidden. There has been widespread publicity about the potential impact that this emergency alert may have, leading to detection of a phone and thus increase personal risk. The advice from those who support survivors is to opt out of receiving the alerts altogether; this means that a phone will not alert. If this is not possible, switch off the phone or put it in airplane mode. Here is the Refuge Tech Safety Emergency Alerts Advice and it includes the instructions about how to manage technology to opt out of receiving alerts.

Churchtown Primary School have been crowned champions of school football in Southport, after winning the Hanlon League outright. The team finished in first position after winning every game!

The whole team have been incredible throughout the season, embodying the Churchtown values at all times. They have been a real credit to Churchtown in their work ethic, teamwork and overall enthusiasm towards all things football.

What happens if my child has an accident during the school holidays/outside of school?

Unfortunately, children do have accidents sometimes, and if it is going to impact on:

Your child’s mobility around school

Sporting activities

Playtime…

…then we ask that you contact the school office so that the medical team can be informed.

Any child who may need crutches, wear a plaster cast, has had an operation, anything that may impact on their school day and their capabilities, we must be informed. The medical team will then carry out a risk assessment and discuss with you the actions that need to be taken to ensure that your child can return to school and feel confident and safe in their school environment.

If you have any questions at all in relation to this then please contact the school office on office@churchtown.org.uk or 01704 508500.
