Curriculum Pathways

Year 9 ‘Deeper’ Learning Through Year 7 and 8 at CHS South you have experienced a real diverse curriculum; you have been able to explore three technology disciplines, study two modern foreign languages and experience four discrete Arts subjects in addition to the more traditional subjects on your timetable.

In Year 9 the focus shifts to developing a deeper understanding of the subjects that you choose to specialise in. You will choose a number of subject areas and the additional concentrated time in these lessons will enable them to ‘master’ the subject and foster a deeper understanding of the subject.

Year 9 – A Foundation for Success • You choose a pathway in Year 8 because we know that it makes students more engaged, more motivated and more successful • You need to be able to leave CHS South with appropriate qualifications, to be able to compete locally, nationally, internationally

• Competition for College and University places is really tough.

Students need to secure outstanding progress and attainment in Years 9, 10 and 11 • For you the key to securing the best possible examination grades to access further education, employment or training, has been laying successful foundations by selecting the right pathways now!

Year 9/10/11 Curriculum The Compulsory Core These are subjects that everyone will have to study: • GCSE English Language & Literature (4 hours per week) • GCSE Mathematics (4 hours per week) • GCSE Science (3 hours per week)

Year 9/10/11 Curriculum The Compulsory Foundation These are the foundation subjects that everyone will have to study: •

Creative Arts ( 1 hour per week )

Digital Technologies ( 1 hour per week )

•

Humanities ( 1 hour per week)

•

Physical Education (2 hours per week)

•

RESPECT (Religious Education/PSHE - 1 hour per week)

Year 9/10/11 Curriculum The Pathways Subjects • In addition to the Compulsory Core students can choose 4 subjects from a

range of grouped pathways. At this stage you are choosing the subject – not the qualification!

• In order to provide a solid basis for Further & Higher education the majority of students will be directed to select at least one subject within the following groups: • 1 Arts (2 hours per week) • 1 Humanities EBACC ( 2 hours Geography or History per week) • 1 MFL EBACC (2 hours French or Spanish per week) • 1 General (2 hours per week)

The Process Pathways Assembly  Today !

Wednesday 27th January : Marketplace open on the website Thursday 28th January –5th February: Pathways Interviews  To ensure that all students are supported in making their decisions regarding their future areas of study, all students in Year 8 will be allocated a 10-minute appointment with a senior member of staff.

These interviews will give you an opportunity to ask any questions about the subjects on offer, or to find support with any concerns they may have. You will be issued with appointment cards for your interview. These are done through the parents evening booking system and you have been added on today.

Monday 8th February: Curriculum Pathways Process Closes  By this date all students will have completed their Curriculum Pathways Form. This will be done on your virtual interview so make sure you are prepared and ready to complete it with your teacher.

The Process Completing the Pathways Form    

Ensure Name and Form are completed clearly Fill all option choices Number them in order of preference 1-4 and then 5 & 6 Make sure TWO reserve choices are given. Give careful thought to these as you may end up studying them!

 Forms must be completed by Monday 8 th Feb at the latest

What next?    

Numbers for each subject will be checked against availability of teachers and rooms We will attempt to accommodate as many first choice preferences as possible Some students may be invited to a consultation meeting Pathways choices will normally be issued in July
