Year R - Spain
We had a brilliant time celebrating MFL Day. We learned all about Spain, and dressed in the colours of the Spanish flag.
We watched some videos which taught us key vocabulary such as how to say good day, ask what somebody’s name is, count to 10, and say different colours.
Afterwards, we learned about Picasso and made Picasso-inspired self-portraits; take a look at our photographs to see some amazing artwork. We also enjoyed making montaditos for snack!

Before lunch, we were lucky enough to have a Zoom call with an English family who live in Spain. We asked them questions about life where they are now, and had a great time talking to them!

Year 1 - Japan
InYear 1 we had great fun celebrating our languages day by exploring the Japanese culture.

During the day we had great fun learning to write our names and counting to ten in Japanese! We also enjoyed making Japanese fans and creating Hirameki art; a technique that uses water colours to create colourful marks all over our paper, once dry we then made the marks into wonderful characters. We also loved learning to play sudoku with our friends and having the opportunity to try a Japanese green tea called sencha and a delicious sweet called mochi.
In the afternoon, we had fun creating our own Japanese zen gardens using sand and natural materials and creating circle art in the style of the amazing Japanese artistYayoi Kasuma.
Year 2 - Greece
Year 2 celebrated the language and culture of Greece.

We were very fortunate to have Alex (Spyros’s mum) who taught the children some basic Greek phrases and some everyday English words that actually originate from the Greek Language. Then the children decorated plates with their names written in the Greek alphabet.
After lunch, the children had fun learning some Greek dancing and then tasted some delicious Greek delicacies that Alex had provided for them. They tasted sour cherry juice, figs, olives, stuffed vine leaves, spinach and feta cheese pie, some Greek biscuits and crisps and Greek yoghurt and honey and rose petal marmalade.
The children had lots of fun and all said they wanted to visit Greece!

Year 3 - Turkiye
InYear 3, we began by learning about the geography of Turkey by drawing maps of the country. We then tried some Turkish food, including Turkish Delight and Cacik dip on pitta bread.

After break, we learnt about the religion of Turkey which is Islam, with a focus on the five fundamental pillars.
After lunch, we learnt some Turkish phrases and were able to have conversations with each other in Turkish.
Finally, we looked at Islamic and Turkish artwork which consists of patterned tiles, and designed and coloured our own.
We had a fantastic day and learnt lots about Turkey.

Year 4 - France
For Modern Foreign Languages (MFL) DayYear 4 celebrated France and the French culture. We:
• Dressed up! It wouldn’t be French day without a nod to fine fashion, after all.
• Used some extra French throughout the day, in instructions for example.
• Had a visit from Hugo’s mum (Johanna) to learn about Paris and we also learnt a French card game. We also got to ask and answer some questions about France and the French culture.
• Played petanque. (French boules)
• Ate French foods (baguettes, cheeses with fruits and dips, brioche and madeleine cakes)
• Learnt about where else in the world French is spoken and how valuable it is to learn the language.
• Learnt about French artist Henri Matisse and created some work in his style, inspired also by our recent trip to Samphire Hoe.
We really enjoyed the day and would like to offer a special thanks to Johanna and Hugo for their contributions to making the day such a success! Merci!

Year 5 - Ethiopia
On Friday the 30th June, it was languages day. Mrs Lee (Hanna’s mum) came into class and taught us about Ethiopia. It was amazing!
First, we learnt where Ethiopia is and its city. We talked lots about the traditions and festivals of Ethiopia and were lucky to see some of the clothes that would be worm to different celebrations. The dresses were stunning!
As part of our day, we tried peppermint tea – some of us liked it and some of us didn’t. In the afternoon, we danced to some Ethiopian wedding music, it involved lots of shaking especially from the shoulders!
Next, we saw and felt some Ethiopian food; it looked so nice my mouth watered; it smelt so lovely too!
Then we learnt about their Prime Minister who had lions in his house and you could hear them roaring! We want to say a huge thank you to Mrs Lee – we all learned so much.

Year 6 - Ukraine

InYear 6, we were very fortunate to be joined by Mrs Campbell and Mrs Thornby who spent time teaching us about the language and culture of Ukraine. We learnt about the Ukrainian alphabet, the different regions and various festivals celebrated.

We had the chance to taste sunflower seeds, a popular snack in Ukraine, and were even provided with beautifully decorated Ukrainian cakes and biscuits!
