KS3 Geography As our students progress as geographers, they will become increasingly aware of the importance of understanding the world around them and their place within it. Geography at BRGS will give our students the opportunity to: Engage with and enjoy their studies, developing a passion for learning about our rich and diverse planet. Be curious about people and places. Appreciate the world and understand how physical and human landscapes are interconnected. Investigate places at all scales from personal to global. Expand their understanding of places and knowledge of their location. Develop the skills to make sense of people and places using a wide range of geographical data. Investigate the world through increasingly complex geographical enquiry. Think about the big ideas of geography and the global issues that are pertinent now and in the future. The aim of the Geography course in Years 7 to 9 is to enable the students to acquire the knowledge, understanding and skills necessary to make a realistic assessment of how man and the earth inter-relate. The Year 7 students are encouraged to ‘Think like a geographer’ by studying maps and atlas skills whilst thinking about their local area and what makes it special. Further work will focus on the processes which affect the physical landscape and the way tourism is managed in the Lake District. Students will also study the weather and climate at a range of scales. All necessary books are supplied by the department but coloured pencils, glue and scissors would be helpful in lessons to complete tasks and keep exercise books neat and tidy. Some parents have been interested in purchasing atlases to assist their children with homework tasks. This is not necessary but if you consider it helpful, we generally use the Collins Students’ Atlas. The main aim in Geography lessons in year 7 is to inspire students to be observant of the world around them and to begin to ask questions. Our ambition is to develop within pupils a thirst for knowledge and understanding that will engage them in lessons and will remain with them outside the classroom. How Parents Can Help Parents can get involved by encouraging the children to describe their surroundings; discuss topical issues; watch the news; read newspapers and turn off their electrical device to look out of the window!
