There has been external support through Lancashire Child and Family Well Being in terms of weekly drop in group sessions for our LGBTQ+ students with the Group Leader stating how impressed by our students and the ethos of the school. We will continue to reflect and listen to student voice regarding to how we best support our diverse community.
A team of students and staff worked together on our UNICEF Rights Respecting Schools Bronze Award which was awarded in May. This represents the first step in our Rights Respecting Schools journey as we promote and realise young people’s rights. There are four key areas of impact for young people at a Rights Respecting School: wellbeing, participating, relationships and self-esteem. Next step Silver!
Celebrating Diversity During 2021-2022, a series of form time presentations and assemblies enabled us to celebrate equality and diversity throughout the year. A range of high profile female speakers, including the Mayor of Rossendale and former student Detective Inspector Bryony Midgley, gave presentations as part of International Women’s Day and we also celebrated Black History Month, National Coming Out Day, LGBTQ+ Month and Autism Awareness Week.

Our last edition focused on how the school was adapting to school life pre pandemic and this academic year has allowed us to experience a greater sense of normality, culminating in enrichment week at the end of the summer term, whereby year groups were on residentials to Lockerbie, Scotland and Waddow Camp near Clitheroe. Geography field trips, music tours to London and Duke of Edinburgh Expeditions have all been back in force and it has been wonderful to see students having the opportunity to participate in wider experiences and the benefits that this brings in terms of their personal development.
This year, there has been a continued and heightened focus in supporting our students’ mental health. During the year, a group of students have been trained as mental health ambassadors with a staff Mental Health Action Group launched with the intention to work towards the Carnegie Centre of Excellence for Mental Health in Schools Award. Students who have required early support have been able to access the Mental Health Support Team (MHST) based at Burnley Hospital, with therapeutic input. In addition, the school has invested in additional counselling provision at school as well as continuing to work with external agencies such as Understanding Autism, Reachout ASC, Positive Action in the Community, Lancashire Child and Family Wellbeing and many more. In mid June 2022, we also welcomed Mrs Eaton to the Pastoral Team as Pastoral Support Manager to work alongside Mrs Fletcher in the same role. A level geographers visited the east coast of England on a fieldwork trip to Yorkshire.

Milly's Smiles, which provides a ‘hospital bag’ known as a Milly Bag for every whose child has been admitted to Manchester, Alder Hey and Leeds Children’s Hospitals with a new cancer diagnosis, and finally, the Alzheimer's Society.
Effective readers of fiction or non fiction texts continually draw upon a complex wealth of prior knowledge about the world and language, as well as their awareness of subject specific genres and vocabulary.
Reading for a Reason
www.brgs.org.uk 3
Research tells us that young people who read for pleasure for just 20 minutes at least once a week make better progress in their learning. It increases their ability to take on new information and boosts their academic attainment in all areas. Even more importantly, it helps improve their mental wellbeing, giving them a sense of achievement and self worth as well as developing their emotional literacy.
It has been wonderful to see our young people return to the large number of extra curricular activities on offer at BRGS. At least 60% of students participate in one or more extra curricular activities. We recognise that logistics and travel arrangements make it difficult for all to participate but are engaging with our students and parents to facilitate even greater participation rates in the future. This newsletter, featuring the achievements of many of our students in their personal development beyond the classroom, provides an insight into the value of these extra curricular opportunities.
It is for this reason that next year BRGS will be focusing on developing our students further as strategic readers and supporting their active engagement with tests. We aim to not only develop subject specific vocabulary and model these effective reading strategies but to also provide active, curriculum based reading opportunities to help students develop their skills and increase their vocabulary and comprehension further.
Extra-Curricular Activities
Lilly (pictured left) in Year 12 received a Young Carers Award for her support of the local community during lockdown alongside her charity volunteering. Lilly is one of the leaders of the BRGS Charities Committee with Honey and Lily (Year 12) alongside significant input from Hattie (Year 13) and the rest of the enthusiastic year group representatives. After a whole school vote, the following charities were chosen to support in 2021 2022: Lancashire Mind (this is continuing relationship with the school also supporting this essential mental health charity during the pandemic);

A series of virtual careers events kicked off with a session focusing on studying medicine. Thanks to Dean Hardy at UCLan for his fantastic insight into what it's really like studying and training to be a Doctor. We wish him well in his next step as he becomes a Junior Doctor!
National Poetry Day To celebrate National Poetry Day students across the school were busy creating ‘Blackout Poetry’ by taking a novel and making a profound statement or point from the words they choose to remain. There were many inspirational creations including:
The book is described as a "funny and inspiring novel about friendship, family, and one undersized boy’s ability to think BIG." The blurb is as follows: Charlie Han’s troubles are much bigger than he is. At school he’s branded an outsider, a loser the tiny kid from the Chinese takeout. His only ally is Sinus Sedgely, a kid with a lower level reputation than Charlie himself. Life at home isn’t much better. His dad is more skilled with a wok than he is with words, and his mom is suffocating the life out of Charlie, worried about his every move. But when a new passion leads Charlie to the mother of all confrontations, he finds his real mom has been hiding a massive secret. A secret that, while shocking, might actually lead Charlie to feeling ten feet tall.
Since The Bubble Wrap Boy, students thoroughly enjoyed The Bone Sparrow by Zana Fraillon and then moved on to Things a Bright Girl Can Do by Sally Nicholls: their first historical fiction of the year which fit in perfectly with LGBTQ+ Month.
Year 8 Book Club
During enrichment week, Year 7 had the privilege of meeting author Phil Earle. Now in Year 8, many of these students are enjoying a Book Club run by Mrs Rogerson and Mrs Ingham to discuss one of Phil's books, The Bubble Wrap Boy.
BRGS Next Steps Careers Programme
Year 8 students are enjoying the opportunity to informally reflect and chat about their reading.

Lucy Noone Blake, a former student who is now a Hospitality and Experience consultant specialising in Marketing and PR was our guest speaker. Recently, Lucy set up Pear Communications and works with a cross sector range of independents to global brands in all aspects of hospitality from training, positioning, launches, PR, marketing and social media strategy.
In the National Ofsted report in June 2021 there was a rapid review of report of harmful sexual behaviours in schools and colleges in which they noted “how prevalent sexual harassment and online sexual abuse are for children and young people.”
Senior Speech Night
5
As a result of the national report, after seeking the advice of the Lancashire Safeguarding Team, who we work with closely, BRGS proactively carried out an audit in October 2021, focusing on the issues raised nationally. The results enabled us to develop a clear action plan in conjunction with the school’s School Improvement Partner (SIP) who has worked with the school for a number of years, Zarina Connelly HMI, who advised on our strategy. In November 2021, we were pleased to learn that our SIP commented that the school is “committed to listening and learning from feedback” and that progressive leadership “should contribute to a strong culture of openness”. Our zero tolerance approach to Harmful Sexual Behaviours will continue to be embedded into the school culture with a comprehensive action plan. Our Harmful Sexual Behaviour policy is available at https://www.brgs.org.uk/about us/policies. This also feeds into our Behaviour Policy which will be launched with students in September and will provide more opportunities to reward the many positive behaviours which our students demonstrate on a daily basis.
Senior Speech Night celebrating the achievements of our A level students took place on Thursday 16th December. However, the event sadly had to be held remotely due to concerns regarding the new Covid variant.
Lucy was joined by five of her friends all former BRGS students who were her audience for her speech. Congratulations to all of our former students who were due to be presented with their certificates. We wish them every success. Lucy is pictured below (third from the right) with her close friends from BRGS days. www.brgs.org.uk

Enrichment Week Round-Up

BRGS former students sent to the frontline were remembered: the 19 to 38 year olds not much older than the students themselves. Many women from the local communities joined in the war effort: working in the Land Army, in munitions, in nursing. Thirty six of our students did not return. The Rolls of Honour with the names of the students and teachers of Newchurch Grammar School and Bacup and Rawtenstall Grammar School who gave their lives in the First and Second World Wars were read followed by the presentation of our wreath by uniformed cadets at the school's memorial in the main entrance.
The stories and readings focused on the following: • the importance of loyalty and having the courage to follow your beliefs; • affirming that there should be no barriers to common humanity; • reminding us of the futility of war. Students were encouraged to continue to search for these stories of the unremembered. To take a moment to recognise the unnamed, forgotten heroes, from all races, backgrounds, genders and religions. The service focused on the importance of understanding that we all live, for the moment, under one sky, and it is our responsibility to remember them all, in our striving for peace.
For those of you interested in finding more about the former students who lost their lives, former BRGS colleague, Anne King, has researched their history to ensure that their stories are heard and shared. Her book, They Left the Valley Behind: The Boys of Bacup & Rawtenstall Grammar School Who Died in World War One is available through Amazon and Anne has kindly donated a copy to the school archives so that we can continue to remember them.
BRGS Remembers
In November 2021, our Remembrance Service focused on the diversity of human life that has been drawn into war, and celebrated their contribution to World War I and World War II.

Richard Addis, Editor of The Day and organiser of the competition, said:
Thea who has won a short story competition hosted by online daily newspaper, The Day, in the 17 18 category as part of the launch of Celebration Day.
Congratulations to Year 12
Winners of the competition were chosen to have their work read out by a star studded selection of celebrities, made up of Lennie James, Harriet Walter and Gemma Arterton. Winners will also receive a £100 Amazon voucher, an iPad, £500 Amazon voucher for their school and a certificate. All winning entries can be viewed on the online gallery here.
Thea wrote a story about Margaret’s brave and inspiring footsteps. As part of BRGS's enrichment programme focusing on personal development in the sixth form, Thea is currently focusing on creative writing and this inspired her to put forward her entry.
Celebration Day is about celebrating life and love, celebrating legacies that are positive, inspiring and enriching. The writing competition asked school children aged 5 18 and their teachers to connect with the oldest person they know and interview them about who influenced them in their childhood, and then write up the story in the most creative way possible. From over 500 entries, The Day’s editors selected five winning pupils from each age category and one winner for the teacher category. From stories of great grandparents and the traditions and tales they passed down, to teachers who ignited a passion for learning, the winning entries paid homage to people who have shaped lives.

“The competition not only helped students showcase their writing skills, it helped connect them with their roots and learn about how life was growing up for the people they care about. It has been heart warming to surface stories that might otherwise have remained untold.”
International Women’s Day World Book Day saw Key Stage 3 students participating in an English competition focusing on female protagonists in literature in support of International Women's Day. The hall was festooned with Votes for Women signs and the Suffragette Flag alongside the names of inspirational females in the world who were proposed by students throughout the school. The competition encouraged students to select a female fictional character and create a bookmark and then summarise in supporting commentary why their character should be recognised as a strong literary character. The winning entry from each year group was printed professionally.

Most notably as the KS3 English lead, Mrs Szafranski has shaped the experiences of hundreds of students through her innovative leadership and curriculum design. Her lasting legacy will continue to do so for years to come. We wish her the very best in her new position.

Message from Mrs Grehan: Mr Peat joined the History department just before Covid began its journey of chaos. He embraced every single challenge with enthusiasm, energy, grace, and a good dose of humour. I think every student he has taught at BRGS, whether as a History teacher or form tutor, will agree with me that he injected passion and flair into his teaching and was always someone they could turn to if they needed help in any area of their school life. We wish him and his family every success in their new life in France and hope that he picks up the language quickly!

The weather was gloriously cold with clear skies and plenty of mud due to rainy antecedent weather at Marl Pits. The scene was set for the Rossendale Schools’ Cross Country Competition. Slippery conditions meant some runners slipped at the start when the horn sounded but all gave it 100% in their respective races. Students from Year 7 11 participated with the competition organised thanks to Rossendale Schools Sports Partnership. Pictured is our Year 7 team which includes district champions from the day Ruby and Isaac! Very well done to all.
