Week 1: Who were the Ancient Greeks?

Geography – locate Greece on a globe / map.

Physical features of Greece and Ancient Greek settlements Locate Greece on a world map and a map of Europe. Discuss features of the country (mainland, islands, mountains, surrounding sea and neighbouring countries). Label maps to show physical features (list on flipchart).

Use Google Earth to find Greece. Ask children to find Athens and discuss its position in relation to things such as mountains and sea. Use 3D view so the terrain is clearer to see. How would this landscape affect the lives of the ancient Greek people? Why would they build a city in the location of Athens?

Annotate Greek landscape pictures, highlighting things that may have affected how the Ancient Greeks led their lives.

History – timeline of key events Look at the ‘Six ages of Greece’ (Oxford Connections page 8-9). Identify key events, places and people.

Work in groups of 3. Add dates to timeline cards using clues stuck up around the classroom.

Order events (discuss how this works for BC dates). Stick dates in the correct order onto border paper. EXT: Research other events / people from Ancient Greece and add own cards to the timeline.

Week 2: What was everyday life like in Ancient Greece?

History – using artefacts to help us understand more about the past.

How do we know about Ancient Greece? Look at artefacts in a sand tray (some physical objects and some laminated images). What do you think it is? What does it tell us about Ancient Greece? Record ideas onto photos of the objects and add to class display. We will revisit these ideas during and at the end of the topic.

Look at PowerPoint for Ancient Greek shipwreck found (Twinkl news). Read together and discuss what this find tells us about life in Ancient Greece,

History – Greek cities and homes A) Children to work in pairs / groups of 3 to research one of the following: homes, food, children or entertainment. Use books, information sheets and the internet to gather facts. Use this information to write a paragraph and produce an illustration to explain this aspect of everyday life.

B) Look at the information about a Greek city (Oxford connections page 18-19). Use this information to design own Greek City. Draw a bird’s eye view map and label the features and at least one use of each building.

Week 3: Did the Ancient Greeks invent democracy?

History – Athens and Sparta including children’s lives and schools in Ancient Greece Research what life was like for children in Ancient Greece. Did all children have the same experiences? Did all children go to school? What did children learn at school?

Use Purple Mash to create information reports about children in Ancient Greece. Choose 3 of the 5 areas from the box on the left to research and write about. Children must write in their own words, not just cut and paste. Add images or clipart.

Geography - city states of Ancient Greece PSHCE & History – Democracy What does democracy mean? Read information together and discuss the different roles of people in Ancient Greece. Sort ideas about democracy in Ancient Greece and democracy today in the UK. As we read information together on the IWB children are to make notes in a venn diagram.

Stop and check ideas at different points of the lesson. Check diagram on slide and see if any key points have been missed. Can we add anything to this slide?

Read information about religion and gods in Ancient Greece from flipchart and PowerPoint. In groups match descriptions of gods with their name cards (Who am I? activity cards).

Read the story of Theseus and the Minotaur (use the version of the story from The Orchard book of Greek Myths). Ask pairs to summarise the story. What are the key features of this myth? Do you know any other Greek myths that share features with this one?

Look at images of Greek pots and discuss what they could have been used for. Identify common design features of ways in which they were decorated. Think about the types of shapes and the images used for their decoration.

Look at examples of other myths. Children to choose one from the list below to retell: Theseus and the Minotaur; Pandora’s box; King Midas: Daedalus and Icarus: The twelve labours of Heracles.

Fill in vase design sheet using ideas from those we have looked at. Use ideas from the IWB and from books to create own designs.

Children to choose a way to retell the story.

Ideas could include the following: a cartoon strip; act out as a group; a mini-book or create a puppet show.

History – understand the characteristics of different Greek Gods Research information about a given Ancient Greek God. Children to follow list on flipchart to make sure they have information for the necessary areas. Use books and the internet.

What do you know about the Olympics? Gather ideas on IWB.

Watch YouTube video about Hoplites. In pairs children need to make notes as we watch the video.

Read facts about the ancient games and the some of the events together. Look at image cards and discuss the events they represent.

Which of these sports are still included in the modern Olympics? How and why may events have changed? Sort cards in the venn diagram according to whether they are part of the ancient and / or modern games.

History – Influences of Ancient Greece on the western world Split the class into groups to take part in a mini Olympics.

Draw and label a Hoplite. Write a brief description of the life of a Hoplite.

History – understand the importance of the Greek soldier and why they fought so many battles Recap what we know about Athens and Sparta.

Discuss the differences between these city-states and think about what this could mean for them.

Look at the events of the Battle of Marathon. As we are looking at them children are to make notes of key events on a whiteboard / post it notes.

Look at key event cards on IWB. As a table arrange these cards into a timeline of the events of the battle.

How could we summarise this? What are the 6 key events that happened? Create a storyboard of what happened in the Battle of Marathon.

Week 9: How did the Ancient Greeks change the world?

History – Influences of Ancient Greece on the western world Use the BBC website in small groups to produce information posters about ways in which the Ancient Greeks influenced world culture and development. Include additional information from other sources.

Organise the poster into sections as listed on the IWB slide. Children could choose to colour code according to this or organise like a mind map. They can be creative in their poster design.

History – Influences of Ancient Greece on the western world Discuss what a biography is and what it would include. Recap the areas in which the Ancient Greeks were influential / highly skilled. Look at the factfiles on the IWB and discuss useful features we could include in our own.

Create mini biographies about one of the following figures from Ancient Greece: Socrates, Pythagarus, Homor, Aristotle, Plato, Hippocrates Use books from the school and class libraries, fact sheets provided and the internet to gather information.

Week 10: Who was Alexander the Great?

History – describe historical events Geography – annotate maps Watch the horrible histories clip about Alexander the Great. Look at the map of Alexander’s conquests. Use atlases to look at where these places are and what they are called today. Go through the PowerPoint together and discuss Alexander’s life and his achievements.

Use information from today to label a map of Alexander’s campaigns using the cards. Use the map to work out the events. Draw arrows and number the cards to show the order in which Alexander’s campaign progressed.

Week 11: What is Greece like now?

Geography – recap physical features of Greece and gather information about human features

Use information sheets, non-fiction books and the internet to gather information about Greece.

Record on fact file sheet in note form.

As a class look at a map of Greece as it is now. Discuss places that people may choose to go on holiday and why these places may be popular. Look through holiday brochures and highlight the Greek destinations on a map. Discuss the information the brochures give us about these places.

Use these notes to produce own mini-book about Greece. Children to add additional information they find which they think will interest their readers.

Children can select their own images to print and add to their finished books.

Week 12: Why do people visit Greece today?

Together define human and physical geography.

Discuss they type of information we could put in each box. Use information sheets, non-fiction books and the internet to gather information to show ways in which the two cities are the same and ways in which they are different.

Work in groups to gather information about the following aspects of Greece; weather and climate; ancient sites; major cities; food; traditions and culture. Use this information to create group PowerPoints about Greece.

This information will be used to create holiday brochures in English.

DT (cooking) – prepare and cook a variety of predominantly savoury dishes.

Research typical Greek dishes using recipe books, information books and the internet.

Use ideas from this to design a menu for a Greek feast. As a class decide on some dishes that we could make in school.

Children to split into groups to make different dishes for the feast.

EXT: design decorations for the feast and decide on an activity to do during the event e.g. Greek dancing.
