Children will take a walk around their local area (Middleton) to spot houses built by Edgar Woods. They will stop to complete observational drawings and complete a Map Bingo activity, ticking off local monuments that they come across. We will stop for a picnic at a local park Local.

During picnic, the children will share what they like/dislike about their locality and what makes it special.

The children will explore the life and works of Edgar Woods.

They will design and make houses out of recycled materials in the style of Edgar Woods.

They will create timelines of landmarks from around Middleton.

They will develop their map skills and locate specific places on a local map.

They will explore the work of LS Lowry and mimic his style to become artists themselves.

They will explore The Gunpowder Plot and who Guy Fawkes was.

Now and then – Playtime of the past Touchstones visit.

To celebrate, the children will display their work in the style of an Art exhibition for their parents to come and view. We will share our artistic representations of Edgar Woods’ architecture and Lowry’s landscapes.

Follow our Creative Questers into the Museum to explore how toys and games have changed (or stayed the same) from Victorian times to present day! Hunt for objects, solve questions and record their findings.

Bring in old toys from home.

Children share their memory boxes with their parents. Take photographs to include.

Week 3: Which landmarks are important to people in Middleton?

History– Middleton Heritage Trail Use leaflets and sources from the books and the internet to find out what the Middleton Heritage Trail is.

Use the PPT to discuss how Middleton has a rich history. Find places on a map and recognise significant landmarks.

History – Significant Landmarks Show pictures of familiar landmarks on the IWB and name.

Share pictures with text and ask groups to summarise why each building is famous or significant in Middleton. Write key facts on the IWB. Pupils to draw the places in their books and write key facts about them.

Memorable experience – Local walk/picnic.

Geography – Local Mapping During picnic, children share what they like/dislike about their locality and what makes it special.

Week 6: How have toys changed over time?

Week 7: Who was Guy Fawkes?

History – Toys: Now and then Energise Bring in something from home that they had when they were a baby; a toy, a book, a bottle, baby clothes. Make a class collection and discuss how they could be sorted into sets. Ask parents and staff to do the same and compare.

History – The Gunpowder Plot – Who was Guy Fawkes? Problems for the Plotters!

What could Guy Fawkes have used? Think about some differences in how people such as Guy Fawkes lived, compared with today.

Children start collecting items to put in a memory box. Make a list of things they would like to include to take home to parents. Bring a shoe box into school.

History – Learn about changes within living memory.

Look at pictures or artefacts of everyday or familiar items from the past to consider what they might be. Describe how they might have been used.

Compare and contrast the items form now and then.

Use cooking utensils/equipment, cleaning items, entertainment items (cameras, radios etc).

Research and find out how the Gunpowder Plot started and some of the problems the plotters encountered!

Role play what happens next and solutions to their problems!

Week 8: What will you put in your memory box?

Art and Design Decorate the outside of their shoebox with colours, papers and materials. They could include photocopies of pictures of their families. Pad the inside with materials and cushion to protect their precious items.

Write messages on small cards to include.

Write about things they love and enjoy.

Attach luggage tags to all their items explaining why they are special.

Wrap photographs in special string and ribbon. Print out pictures of them with their friends.

Geography – Mapping It Out!

Art and Design – LS Lowry – Who is L Lowry?

Research and find out key facts about the artist.

Establish how he is from an area close to Manchester which is Salford. Compare two paintings by Lowry discussing what each one is showing and which techniques the artist has used.

Look at key artwork and establish that Lowry only used 5 colours. He would mix these colours and use black and white to add tint and shade to these colours.

Create a cityscape painting by mixing colours.

Art and Design – LS Lowry - Perspective Look at different paintings and establish that perspective is how things look close and far away.

Those which are close are normally bigger and those far away are normally smaller.

Paint a background with a scene using a perspective.

Art and Design – LS Lowry - Buildings Think about Lowry’s cities. Look at the buildings you can see which we are going to recreate for our painting. Use pen and sugar paper to recreate the buildings, drawing key features such as windows and doors.

Look at the key features of a map and recap previous learning.
