Life at Bishops

The following pages will give you a flavour of the day-today life of a student at Bishop Rawstorne, but at the Open Evening or beyond, please feel free to have a chat with our staff if there is any extra information you require.

The School Day

A typical day in the life of a Bishops Rawstorne student is as follows:

Absences

Everything we do as a secondary school has to start with good attendance. Students can only achieve their full potential, develop their abilities and work towards a positive future if they actually attend school and the moment that attendance begins to slide, everything else will follow. No student is allowed to leave the premises during the school day and any leave of absence will only be granted in very special or exceptional circumstances; proof of appointment is required for all appointments.

Parental Communications

Maintaining parental involvement is an essential element of the parent/school partnership and for this we use the SIMS Parent App, and emails. Emails are sent regularly, keeping you up-to-date with school activities, and you can view your child’s attendance, timetable, school conduct, homework and progress reports on the app. Our website is also a source of information for updates on various aspects of school life.

High Standards of Behaviour

Here at Bishop Rawstorne we pride ourselves on the highest standards of behaviour and courtesy which promotes self-discipline, positive achievement and effective learning. Working in a calm, positive and supportive environment has a significant impact on the development of our students.

Tutor Programme

We are proud of our tutor programme which we consider to be the sixth lesson of the day! Your child will have the same tutor and tutor group throughout their school life allowing them to build strong relationships within school which we believe plays a key role in their development. The activities a typical Year 7 student will have with their tutor includes; messages, ‘Thought of the Day’, quizzes, worship, assembly, silent reading and mentoring.

School Lunches

Our dining facility at Bishop Rawstorne is called Beaumont’s Cafe and the catering is run by Mellors Catering Services. Students are able to purchase their lunch, or a snack or drink, from the restaurant or bring in packed lunches. Our kitchen staff pride themselves on providing an excellent well-rounded menu and can cater for students who have allergies or intolerances. Details of the menus, including any specials or themed days, can be found on our website. We use biometric purchasing in school and money can be preloaded to your child’s account for use during the day. Students are also able to pre-order items if they wish.

The school office is the first point of call for contacting group tutors, the pastoral team or members of teaching staff, and parents are encouraged to get in touch if they are worried or concerned about any matter. Often difficulties can be sorted out very simply if they are dealt with straight away - if they are left, they can become crises.

We use iPayimpact for the payment of school meals, trips and many other payments.

A PSHE and mental health newsletter is sent out each half term updating you on the topic foci for the coming weeks, and a school newsletter is sent out at the end of every full term, keeping you up-to-date on achievements, trips, events and activities that have taken place over the course of the term. Previous copies of these are available on our website.

Home Learning

It is school policy to set homework for all students on a regular basis and there are no exceptions. The work or activity set takes into account the student’s ability and is related to the work being pursued in lessons. It has a clear purpose to either reinforce or consolidate classwork, or to be preparation for the next lesson. Homework enhances the classroom learning experience and provides a clear assessment overview of progression that can inform future planning and is integral to students’ long-term academic attainment. The co-operation and support of parents is especially appreciated and essential in helping us to identify students who may be under-achieving.

Meeting Students Needs

Ensuring a Smooth Transition

The transition from primary to secondary school can be an exciting, but also challenging experience for many children. As a school, we work hard to make sure your child’s move from primary to secondary is as smooth and as happy as possible. We will visit each primary school in the summer term which provides the opportunity to discuss with both staff and students their hopes and concerns about the transition from primary to secondary. If requested, our SENCO will also visit individual students who may need special support at secondary school.

We then invite parents and children to a special ‘New Intake Evening’ in June to see the school and meet key members of staff which will include their group tutor. Finally, in July your child will be invited to a ‘Taster Day’ where they follow a specially prepared timetable, enabling them to experience school routines, enjoy our lunches (very popular!) and make new friends. This getting to-know-you process ensures that every child starting school in August has had at least a couple of opportunities to familiarise themselves with school life.  Additionally, they will meet other students and staff they will come into contact with over the following five years.

Safeguarding

Through day-to-day contact with children, schools are particularly well placed to observe signs of abuse, changes in behaviour or failure to develop. Here at Bishop Rawstorne our staff undergo ongoing safeguarding training to ensure we continue to comply with our legal duty and with all child protection policies and safeguarding regulations. If we have a concern about a particular student we will follow our safeguarding procedures, including discussing with the school’s designated safeguarding lead and Prevent officer, and where deemed necessary, with children’s social care and/or the police.

Learning Support

The Learning Support Department at Bishop Rawstorne assists students who have a wide range of needs including physical, social, behavioural and specific learning difficulties. We have a highly qualified Learning Support staff with a vast experience of dealing with students with physical disabilities, learning difficulties, behavioural issues, English as an additional language, looked after children, and Able, Gifted and Talented students. These qualifications include areas such as speech and language, and dyslexia specialisms. Working closely with teaching staff, students, and other agencies, we assess needs and create individual education plans to ensure progression for our students who need our support. This might be one to one tuition, small group work, or in class support, differentiating the curriculum as necessary.

The Library Resource Centre

Our library is fully computerised and generously stocked with a wide selection of books, both fiction and non-fiction, together with other sources of information. Students are able to access computers at break and lunchtimes for homework and leisure purposes and to borrow up to two books at any one time for two weeks. There are regular events and rewards and prizes can be earned with our loyalty reward card scheme. Activities, such as crosswords and quizzes and games, are available every day.

Music Tuition Opportunities

As part of our commitment to broadening the experience and development of our students, we have a wide-range of individual music tuition. A team of talented music teachers come into the school to tutor our students meaning we can offer a significant number of musical opportunities, including baritone, clarinet, cornet, drums, flute, acoustic, bass and electric guitar, keyboards, piano, saxophone, tenor horn, trombone, trumpet, as well as vocal lessons. All lessons are given by specific instrument specialists and fees are payable termly in advance.

Careers Education and Guidance

We are proud of our careers guidance service which begins in Year 7 by informing students of the variety of options open to them. A weekly careers’ advisor will visit students in Years 8-11 and an intensive assembly programme from March to May each year helps our Year 8s make the most appropriate option choices. Staff continue to work closely together to identify, and assist your child’s career aspirations throughout their time in school through to Year 11, supporting them in deciding what their next step is. We follow the Gatsby Benchmarks.

Collective Worship

As a Church of England Academy, Bishop Rawstorne has Christian worship at the heart of our everyday life. Our collective worship is driven by our Christian Distinctiveness but it runs much deeper than that. We care about human flourishing and strive to cultivate an atmosphere in which everyone can experience life in all its fullness.

Tutor Group Worship

This takes place in tutor groups led by tutors and students during Wednesday or Thursday afternoon registration. The materials are planned by our worship team and seek to give students and staff an opportunity to stop, have a moment of silence, pray, and to worship God. These times are planned to give them the chance to hear about and explore the Christian faith for themselves, at their own pace.

Year Group Worship

These are times that traditionally we have called assemblies. They still contain notices and give the Heads of Year the opportunity to speak to year groups. But the key feature of these times is worship. They begin with a candle being lit, and then a Clergy Chaplain, a member of staff, a tutor group, or an external visitor delivers a time of thought, reflection, and prayer to engage students in exploring the theme for that week.

Worship Services

These take place several times during the year. They are times to celebrate key school events and Christian festivals. These are Christian in nature and content, and aim to meet each student, regardless of the depth of their faith. Celebrating together is a foundation of our school and brings us together as a community to worship God.

Chaplaincy Team

The school chaplaincy team is made up of senior members of our staff, members of the governing body and local clergy members who work together to develop and support the spiritual lives of our students on a daily basis. This team contributes significantly to the worship and delivery of the programme within the school, offering spiritual support to students, staff and parents.

Ethos Team

This group was established four years ago as a development of the Student Spirituality Council with the aim of being actively involved in the spiritual and worship aspect of school life. They meet half-termly throughout the year and are supported by members of the chaplaincy team.

Outstanding Pastoral Care

We have a strong and powerful tradition of excellent staff-student relationships, which enhances effective teaching and learning. Our students are exceptionally well cared for in an environment which is positive in its approach to young people. Each individual student is valued. Our aim is to enable students from across the entire ability range to achieve their academic potential and to develop into responsible young adults.

The Pastoral Care Team

The Pastoral Care Team at Bishop Rawstorne works to support, develop and inspire students, whilst instilling strong values and a sense of responsibility for their behaviour and actions. We will encourage where needed, empathise when required and enforce rigorously the high standards our academy is known for.

Mr Duckworth is Assistant Headteacher with responsibility for Pastoral Care, and oversees the leadership and management of all five year groups and pastoral issues therein on a day-to-day basis. This team carries out a number of important roles within the school and these include liaising with local sixth forms to ensure a smooth transition to further education, liaising closely with primary schools to ensure effective integration into the life of Bishop Rawstorne’s community in Year 7 and the allocation of tutor groups.

Mr Almond is Assistant Head Teacher, SENCO, and also has responsibility for the KS4 / 5 transition.

Tutor Group System

Tutors are the first point of contact between home and school. The pastoral system is organised in a tutor group system where your child will have the same tutor and tutor group class who will, where possible, stay with them for 5 years. This allows them to build strong relationships within school which we believe plays a key role in their personal development.

Heads of Year

Your child’s Head of Year will also, where possible, stay with your child throughout their school life, providing a continuous and supportive environment for your child. The Heads of Year work closely with Senior Staff, Curriculum Leaders and Lead Teachers, who have responsibility for care and discipline within their areas.

Talented Teaching Staff

We are lucky to have such talented, friendly and supportive staff. We have an outstanding teacher team here at Bishop Rawstorne, blending huge levels of experience with the fresh ideas of teachers who are new to, or in the early years of their teaching careers.

Up-to-date lists of all our teaching and support staff can be found on our website https://bishopr.co.uk/our-school/staffing-structure

All students at Key Stage 4 study the following compulsory subjects to examination level: English Language and Literature, Mathematics, Science, Religious Education and either History or Geography. The majority of students also study a Modern Foreign Language (German and in some cases French as well). The balance of subjects studied is drawn from a comprehensive menu of option choices, including:

‘In addition to the above, there are two subjects which are a compulsory part of the KS4 curriculum at Bishop Rawstorne for which students do not get a GCSE qualification: Personal, Social, Health and Citizenship Education (PSHE) which supports the development of our students socially, morally, culturally and spiritually, and Physical Education. We offer a varied programme of PE activities, both on and off-site and at Key Stage 4 students can determine their ‘pathway’ – either fitness, competition or health and well-being.

Developing Character

We understand that school plays a very influential part in the personal development of its students, and it is important that we do this in a manner that is beneficial to all our young people. We have developed an ethos in our school within which all students can grow, flourish, respect others and be respected. Our aim at Bishop Rawstorne is to ensure that we do all that we can to help our students develop into self-assured, confident, happy, aspirational young people who are developing their selfknowledge and who will become positive global citizens.

• The school is an accredited provider for the Duke of Edinburgh Award and we offer our students in Years 10 and 11 the opportunity to achieve their Bronze and Silver Awards and develop as an individual and as part of the wider team in the areas of volunteering, physical and outdoor skills and expedition.

• As part of our commitment to responsible citizenship, our Student Voice remains an important voice in the school. Students from all year groups represent each tutor group and make their views known to the Headteacher and Governor. They are involved in the interview process for appointments and can help shape improvements in facilities, policies and decision-making processes contributing hugely to the future direction of the school.

• We explore and develop the understanding of faiths through World Faith Day, a celebration of different faiths and traditions where a variety of faith representatives and experts visit our Year 8 students delivering workshops.

• A Cultural Experience Day takes place in July of each year where the whole school enjoys a range of themed activities. In 2022-2023 the theme was Chinese culture.

• The whole school takes part in National Science Week in March which provides students with the opportunity to take part in a range of science challenges and even hold a variety of insects!

• Throughout Europe, 700 million Europeans are represented in the Council of Europe’s 46 member states and all are encouraged to discover more languages at any age, as part of or alongside their studies. Each year we celebrate the European Day of Languages with a broad range of exciting activities for our Year 7 students to enjoy, learning about culture, countries and new languages.

• We provide fundraising opportunities to support local charities and causes which are close to our hearts, including Macmillan Coffee Mornings, cake bakes, appeals and more!

• Our Human Careers’ Library is open to all students and gives them the opportunity to hear first hand about a range of career opportunities and show them what a fantastic choice of career opportunities there are out there.

• Authors, and various external speakers and agencies make regular visits supporting PSHE topics, helping support student’s mental health and wellbeing with informative and often entertaining presentations on a range of issues.

• In Year 9 students can apply to become Student Mentors – these students are allocated to each new Year 7 tutor group and will help guide and assist our new students throughout their school journey.

• All students, when they start Year 11, have the honour and privilege of becoming a Prefect. This role is reviewed by the Head of Year and acknowledges the students’ senior status and provides them with the opportunity to demonstrate their maturity, responsibility and leadership skills to support the wider school community.

• All prefects also have the opportunity to apply to become Senior Prefects in Year 11 – shortlisted prefects are selected after an interview process with the Headteacher, Deputy Headteacher and Head of Year, and have additional duties in supporting the school.

• Our Head Students are chosen from short-listed Senior Prefects, and are voted for by all members of staff.

• We have regular library events, such as reading challenges, Scholastics Book Fair, Lancashire Book of the Year, World Book Day celebrations, reading club and author visits.

Celebrating Student Achievements

Here at Bishop Rawstorne we have developed an awards programme designed to reward achievements in school and to also celebrate student accomplishments outside of school. It provides students with a clear pathway for achieving badges and awards whilst making sure they are attainable for all students.

• Students can receive Reward Badges for great classwork, homework and for general attitude around school and once they have reached a badge level threshold (bronze/silver/gold/platinum) they will receive a Reward Badge which they wear on their blazer.

• There are 7 types of ‘B’ for Bishops Badges that are available for recognition of activities outside of school work, each one recognising a slightly different achievement: Character, Ambassador, Charity, Community, Enterprise, Arts and Sport.

• Headteacher Awards provide an extra challenge and students will receive a Headteachers Badge once they have gained 3 or more ‘B’ for Bishops badges, for competing nationally, or if they have been nominated directly for doing something else that is exceptional - at the Headteachers discretion.

Further details of our reward programme can be found on our website https://bishopr.co.uk/parents/awards.

You will see that some of the key examination measures include a second value in brackets. This is because in 2020/2021, schools were asked to provide Teacher Assessed Grades (TAGs) as the basis for awarding GCSE and equivalent grades in 2021. Our Year 11 leavers in 2022 sat their GCSE English Literature in 2021 (which was awarded as a TAG). For DfE school measures, any TAGs from examinations sat before 2022 it was decided would not be included in school accountability measures (they obviously still counted for the students).

This late decision had a detrimental affect upon our school accountability measures, and furthermore suggested a step down from the last examination year of 2019. Therefore, we have provided the measures in brackets so you can see how we would have performed if school accountability measures remained unchanged.

You will also note that there are no accountability measures for 2020 and 2021. As a result of Covid, qualifications were awarded as Teacher Grades. Our students did very well from this, but they were not awarded as a result of a formal examination window, and therefore are not being presented for comparison.

Admissions

Bishop Rawstorne is a highly popular local secondary school that offers an excellent all-round education within a thriving Christian community. It is the school of choice for families who live within our foundation and named parishes, but we also take students from a broad geographical area. In the first instance students are awarded places either through faith commitment or geographically, but once places are allocated at the start of March each year, some families choose to go our waiting list in order to get a place or choose to go down an appeal route. At the start of the academic year 2022/2023 we had 193 students on roll in Year 7. Some places in Year 7 were offered as late as the start of September 2022, so it is worth persevering!

How do I apply for a place for my child at Bishop Rawstorne?

To apply for a place at Bishop Rawstorne Academy for August 2024 please visit the Lancashire County Council website https:// www.lancashire.gov.uk/children-education-families/schools/ apply-for-a-school-place/ and fill in the online form by 31 October 2023.

You will also need to complete the Supplementary Information Form which can be found on our website https://bishopr.co.uk/ parents/admissions and return it to the Governors Admissions Committee at Bishop Rawstorne, by 31 October 2023.

Should you wish Faith Commitment to be taken into consideration please ensure you fill in section 5 of the form. Foundation places are offered on faith grounds to members of Christian churches and other major world faiths. Please note that it is the Faith Commitment of one or both parents that is considered and not the Faith Commitment of the child.  For Faith Commitment to be applied, parent(s) must attend a church service at least fortnightly and for at least one year before applying for a place at Bishop Rawstorne.

Places are offered to those seeking a school with a Christian tradition. Where there are more applicants than places within a criterion, distance will be used to allocate places with those closest to the school given priority. Parents are asked to work down the criteria in order from 1.1 to 1.12 to see which criterion or criteria their child(ren) may be placed at.

The school’s Admission policy, including full details of the criteria can be found on the school website: https://bishopr.co.uk/parents/admissions and we highly recommend you check this before applying. Copies of all these documents can also be obtained from the school.

Parents are informed about secondary school allocations on 1 March 2024.
