The Hook Experience, information, clip, story etc that sets the purpose for children to create a piece of writing. Put the skills children are going to learn into a context. Our purpose is to….. How do authors write….pose the question of finding out about the text type we are going to learn Pull out the ‘ingredients’ (skills) together to make part 3 more purposeful Gather information children need to be able to write both the text type and the context Gather ideas from examples of this text type – use a teacher model (including elements of GD) of what you expect children to have achieved by the end of the cycle. Direct teaching of the skill ‘ingredients’ children need to be able to write this text type. Quality modelling and opportunities for supported composition. Practise skills Use above 3 parts to write their piece of writing set out in The Big Picture Use Literacy book as a journal, scrap book to create piece of writing independently. Time to draft and respond to feedback to draft during this stage.

The cycle can take as long as it needs to, minimum over a week but could extend to 2 weeks. Parts 2-4 could also be repeated a number of times to build up a longer piece of writing. There should be regular opportunities for assessed pieces of writing to be done – this will be set at a whole school level and will be a stand-alone, ‘cold’ task.
