REVIEW - Moved to Canada in 1906. Enlisted Victoria, British Columbia, which indicates he was living in that general area - joined the 67th Battalion - the Western Scots. All documents show him born in Leyland. Leyland Parish News November 1916.cank

Jimmy Barnes: b. 3rd July 1897. Admitted to school 27th April 1910. Address: 11, Hough Lane, Leyland. After Balshaw’s he became a manager for a glover, then a clerk for the Motor works. He was killed in 1917. Age 19.

Born at Leyland. 2015 NOTES - Jimmy on Balshaws memorial. 2018 REVIEW - AKA Jimmy Barnes. Probate found as follows, ""BARNES James of Queen's Hotel Leyland Lancashire private A.S.C. died 3 May 1919 at the Military Hospital Preston Lancashire Administration London 7 May to Robert Barnes licensed victualler. Effects £369 14s. 6d."" His score was originally 3, but I have amended this to 5 as he was born and baptized in Euxton. 1911 Census shows living in Leyland - it would also appear that his residence immediately before and after military service was also in Leyland. S prefix to service number in Army Service Corps denotes Supply. Often accompanied with a number, denoting recruitment into the appropriately numbered Kitchener (New) Army

Oswald Berry:

Second Lieutenant Oswald William Berry. Died 8/4/1917 aged 24 9th (Reserve) Battalion (53rd Training Reserve Battalion), King's Own Scottish Borderers Commonwealth War Graves Information: Caberet-Rouge British Cemetery, Souchez, Pas de Calais, France. Panel or Grave Reference: XXVII.F.21. Additional Information: Son of Elias Sumner Berry and Margaret Ann Berry, of 2, Hesketh Rd., Southport. 2018 REVIEW - Born in Leyland to the Berry mill owning family. Went to Canada before the war for a spell but looks like he may have returned. However, we don't know where he was living. Brother Reginald Andrew John Berry served in the Royal Garrison Artillery, Brother Lionel qualified as a pilot 10/08/1915 and was with Royal Flying Corps. Score changed from 2 to 1. NB: Tree is contained within that of ANSON HARRIS. AMENDED (SCORE ONLY)

Jack Bretherton: 1 of 3??

Air Mechanic 1st Class Jack Bretherton. Died 30/12/1917 16851, Royal Flying Corps Commonwealth War Graves Information: Chatby Memorial, Egypt. 2018 REVIEW - RAF Muster Roll shows trade as Carpenter and that he joined on 23 December 1915. His last promotion was on the 1 August 1916 and he was paid 4 Shillings. RFC service record now held. This confirms that he lived at Moss Lane in Leyland. Born in Leyland also.

Bert Cank: Thomas Cuthbert Cank was born on 9th March 1896. His Dad was Manager of Lancashire Pheasanteries and he lived at Woodbine Villa in Farington. He was admitted to Balshaw’s on 11th January 1909 and he left us on 12th April 1911 to work as a farmer. He joined the Royal Field Artillery as a Gunner but died in hospital in Rouen, France, in 1917.

Gunner Thomas Cuthbert Cank. Died 24/1/1917 aged 20 116532, B Battery, 188 Brigade, Royal Field Artillery Commonwealth War Graves Information: St.Sever Cemetery Extension, Rouen, Seine-Maritime, France. Panel or Grave Reference: O.IV.D.9. Additional Information: Only son of John and Louise Isabel Cank, of 7, Balderstone Rd., Preston, Lancs. 2015 NOTES - Waring does not include Balshaws school in his list of monuments. Waring says he lived in Lostock Hall, possibly because he appears on Lostock Hall Memorial - no documentary proof yet though. St. Paul’s memorial shows rank as 'Private'

Albert Clayton: b. 24th January 1898. Admitted to Balshaw’s 20th December 1910. Left Balshaw’s 20th December 1912 to become a Goods officer at London and North Western Railway. Son of a farmer at Lower Farm, Charnock, Penwortham. Served with British Expeditionary Force in France as a Signaller with the R.F.A. (Royal Field Artillery). Killed in France 27th September 1914. Age 16.

Howard Gleave: John Howard Newberry Gleave was born on 5th April, 1894. His Dad was a Reverend Thomas Gleave, his mum was Margaret Gleave and he had three brothers and a sister. His war record lists Douglas Vicarage, Parbold as his parents’ address when Howard died which is Church of England. In the 1911 census he is listed at 19 Chester Road, Preston, with his extended family, ten people in total. He went to Balshaw’s from 1904 to 23rd December 1910. He passed his exams and began work as a junior bank clerk at William Deacon’s Bank for three years after leaving Balshaw’s. He then moved to Hosmer British Columbia in Canada in 1913. His address is listed as The Bank of Montreal in Vancouver. In February he joined the 4th Canadian Pioneers regiment (number 103403) firstly as a Private, then in the 67th Canadian Engineers Pioneer Battalion. He arrived in France in August 1916 but he was killed in action with Canadian forces in the battle of Mount Kemell on 1st September 1916: just three days later. Age 22. He is buried/commemorated at Reninghelst New Military Cemetery, Ypres, Belgium.

Lance Corporal William Hampson. Died 20/7/1917 aged 29 53682, 19th (Service) Battalion (2nd County), Durham Light Infantry Commonwealth War Graves Information: Lempire Communal Cemetery, Aisne, France. Panel or Grave Reference: 9. Additional Information: Son of the late John and Cecily Hampson, of 1, Richmond Terrace, Leyland, Lancashire. 2018 REVIEW - lived and was born in Leyland (all records).

Stanley Iddon: b. 11th February 1900. He was the Youngest son of Thomas and Ellen. Admitted to Balshaw’s 10th September 1912. Left Balshaw’s 30th July 1915 to work in an office in Bamber Bridge. His Dad was an Engineer. Stanley became a Flight Cadet with RAF. Killed in training 6th September 1918. Aged 18. He is buried at St Leonard’s Higher Walton.

Flight Cadet Stanley Redvers Iddon. Died 6/9/1918 aged 18 128018, 9th Training Depot, Royal Air Force Commonwealth War Graves Information: Walton-le-Dale (St. Leonard) Churchyard, Lancashire, United Kingdom. Panel or Grave Reference: Near South Boundary. Additional Information: Son of Thomas and Ellen Iddon, of 189, Higher Walton Rd., Walton-le-Dale, Preston. 2018 REVIEW - Brother Colwell Iddon was 49882 Private in the RAMC (Service / Pension Record held) and ended the war as an acting serjeant. Stanley born Higher Walton and lived in Walton-le-Dale and was killed whilst still in training in an Aero Accident.

Harold Jackman M.C.: 94764

Grave Inscription reads: Also Capt. Harold Jackman MC/ Son of the above John Jackman/ Who was Killed near St Quentin/ during the German offensive/ March 21st 1918, Aged 27 years./ He enlisted at Winnipeg in August 1914 and/ came to England with the 1st Canadian Divn./ with which he went France in Feb. 1915 and/ served with them until he was given a Commission in the 7th Kings Royal Rifle Corps July/ 1916. He was twice Mentioned in Despatches and/ was awarded the Military Cross./

Will Marsden: b. 26th May 1898 at High Cliff, Leyland. He attended the Wesleyan Elementary School (now Leyland Methodists). He came to Balshaw’s 26th April 1911. Left Balshaw’s 30th July 1913 to become an

assistant to his father as Master Miller. He joined up with the Loyal Regiment of North Lancashire and was killed in 1917.

Lance Corporal William Marsden. Died 10/8/1917 aged 19 24659, 9th (Service) Battalion, Loyal North Lancashire Regiment Commonwealth War Graves Information: Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium. Panel or Grave Reference: Panel 41 and 43. Additional Information: Son of Mary Marsden, of 5, Beatrice Terrace, School Lane, Leyland, Preston, and the late William Marsden. 2018 REVIEW - Born and lived in Leyland (census etc).

Sidney Mill: b. 1892 in Walton-le-Dale. He lived at Almond Cottage with his mum and dad, Mr & Mrs Robert Mill, and he had a sister Catherine Isabella Mill. He fought with 25th Battalion, Manchester Regiment, Lancashire. Killed 23rd April 1917. Served in France & Flanders. Age 25.

Arthur Parker: b. 16th February 1895. Went to St. James’ elementary school. Arrived at Balshaw’s 3rd September 1907. Left Balshaw’s 28th July 1909. His Dad was an artisan at the Bleach Works (possibly in Whittle). After school he became a farmer and then worked at the Bleach Works but King’s College Liverpool is mentioned. He was exempted from school fees. Killed in France 1914. Age 19

Sergeant Arthur Parker. Died 1/5/1917 14811, 12th (Service) Battalion, King's (Liverpool Regiment) Commonwealth War Graves Information: Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France. Panel or Grave Reference: Pier and Face 1D 8B and 8C. 2018 REVIEW - Born and lived in Leyland (Census / SDGW).

Eric William Pierce (misspelt Peirce in the Hall and on the War Memorial): b. 20th November 1894 at Chapel House, Rivington, Adlington. His Dad was Captain William Pierce, an officer in the Merchant Marine, his mum was Maggie Pierce and he had a sister called Olive Margaret Pierce (who married Arthur Howard in 1920 age 20 and possibly remarried in 1939) and the 1911 census lists his maternal Grandad Samuel Thompson and a housekeeper called Annie Booth at their house. He arrived at Balshaw’s 3rd September 1907. Left Balshaw’s 25th July 1911. He was exempt from tuition fees. After school he worked as a Chemist at Lever Brothers at Port Sunlight. Joined the Royal Scots Engineers in Liverpool (Regiment number 113457) and rose to the rank of Corporal. The Balshaw’s school admissions book mentions he served in Galipoli in 1915 but was killed in Flanders, France on 1st July 1916. The Battle of the Somme. Age 22. He is commemorated at the Thiepval Memorial

William Rigby: Could be any of these!!!! 9 of them!

Edgar Irving Robinson: b. 20th November 1898 at Elm Villas, Liverpool Road, Penwortham to Ironmonger, William Robinson and mum, Caroline. Edgar had three older brothers: Frank born in 1894, Harold born in 1896 and Norman born in 1897. Edgar went to Cop Lane Elementary School in Penwortham before arriving at Balshaw’s on 6th September 1911. He enlisted as a Private with 16th Battalion, Manchester Regiment (number 57204) who fought with the Yorkshire regiment according to military records. That battalion saw action at Pèronne and in the battles of the Somme and Arras before being Killed in action at the Battle of Bapaume on 25th August 1918. Aged just 19. He is commemorated at Warlencourt British Cemetery in Pas de Calais

Private Edgar Irving Robinson. Died 25/8/1918 aged 19 57204, 1/6th Battalion, Manchester Regiment Commonwealth War Graves Information: Warlencourt British Cemetery, Pas de Calais, France. Panel or Grave Reference: VI.H.26. Additional Information: Son of William and Caroline Robinson, of Elm Villas, Penwortham, Preston. 2018 REVIEW - Born and lived in Penwortham. Gravestone memorial also at St. Mary's

Charles Leigh Rose: b. 19th December 1894. Arrived at Balshaw’s 31st August 1904, Left Balshaw’s 30th July 1913. Lived at 55, Towngate, Leyland. Dad was a Grocer proprietor (shopkeeper) but he was exempted from school fees due to a Lancashire Senior School P.P. £20 p.a. for 2 years in September 1910. He then won the Stanning Memorial Shield which was also a bursary for £50 p.a. for 3 years (around £4,000 in today’s money). Went to Owen’s College Manchester after Balshaw’s and achieved a Bachelor of Science Degree (2nd Class). Died in the army in January 1918. Age 23.

Harold Southworth: b. July 1886 to Enoch and Margaret Southworth, brother to Edith Southworth. Lived at 54, Railway Road in Chorley, St. James’ Parish. His Dad died when Harold was 14. When he left Balshaw’s he became a winding master (spinning industry?). He enlisted in the Scot’s Guard, regiment number 10650, a Lance Corporal. He landed in France on 14th January 1915 and was killed only 11 days later on 25th January, 1915. At first it was thought he died in a mine blast or on the front-line trench during an offensive but a fellow soldier reported his end was very different…

A letter from one George Charnley dated 1 June 1915 written from a German POW camp Merseburg which in part says - "Harold Southworth was shot through the head (as he was next to him) also two more Leyland boys in R Holmes and W Collinge”. Harold was 28

He is buried and commemorated at Le Touret Memorial in France:

I just noticed your school web post about remembrance last year, and that one of your students mentioned Harold Southworth. Interested to see this, as he was my grandads uncle, indeed my grandad was named after him.

Died 27/11/1916 aged 20 437654, 15th Battalion (48th Highlanders of Canada), Canadian Infantry Commonwealth War Graves Information: Villers Station Cemetery, Villers-Au-Bois, Pas de Calais, France. Panel or Grave Reference: IV.B.4. Additional Information: Son of Richard and Edith Southworth, of Rossington, Edmonton, Alberta. Native of England. 2015 NOTES - 1916 Canada Census of Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Alberta found. Also found some later passenger lists for his parents. 1911 Canadian Census also found. 2018 REVIEW - AKA WIllie Southworth. Born at Farington and lived in Alberta before joining up.

Harold Wignall was born circa 1882, in birth place , to John Wignall and Charlotte Wignall Harold had 4 siblings: Percy Wignall and 3 other siblings .

Leslie Wood: b. 23rd September, 1896, at 4, Manchester Terrace, Leyland. His Dad was the Headmaster of a primary school and he was admitted to Balshaw’s on 8th September, 1909 and left Balshaw’s on 24th April 1914 to attend the University of Manchester for a student teacher degree. He joined up immediately upon the war’s outbreak as a 2nd Lieutenant for the Royal Welsh Fusiliers and was Killed in Action that same year. 1914. Aged just 18.

Second Lieutenant (Acting Captain) William Leslie Wood. Died 7/5/1917 aged 21 South Ribble WW1 Memorial - 2018 Review 160 15th (Service) Battalion (1st London Welsh), Royal Welsh Fusiliers Commonwealth War Graves Information: Essex Farm Cemetery, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium. Panel or Grave Reference: III.F.2. Additional Information: Son of James and Minnie Elizabeth Wood, of Leyland, Preston. 2015 NOTES - Marked as '3' even though these details do not appear on SDGW - I have taken this from Bill Waring's original research. 2018 REVIEW - Born and lived in Leyland. His father James Wood was the headmaster of a school in Leyland

Rainford Gent Marland: At Balshaw’s 1929-31. RAF. Became a Sergeant Pilot in May 1940 and fought in the Battle of Britain with a squadron on the East Coast before being moved South involved in many operational fighter sweeps over France. He died in the Western Desert Offensive in 1942.

David Gold: CL 1931-36. M.I.A.

John Callely Hesketh: WN 1932-38. RAF.

George Herbert Stratton: b. 4th November 1897 at The Police Station, Croston. His Dad was the Police Sergeant there. Went to Balshaw’s between 1911 and 20th December 1912 when he moved to Chorley In the First World War he joined the Cameron Highlanders as a 2nd Lieutenant and rose to the rank of Captain of the Gordon Highlanders by 1917. After the war he represented the Bleachers Association of Manchester and was well-known in business circles there. He also served in the Second World War, re-joining the army in 1940 attached to the Green Howards. He was wounded by mid-1943 and died suddenly while serving in H.M Forces later in 1943 aged 46, leaving a wife and son.

On19January2010hewasdraftedtoCharlieCompany,40CommandoRoyalMarines,in timetocompleteMissionSpecificTrainingforOperationHERRICK12.

InMarch2010heonceagaindeployedtoAfghanistan,wherethistimehewasbasedat PatrolBaseAirportLoungelocatedontheedgeoftheSanginWadi.CharlieCompanyhas beenresponsibleforthesecurityaroundPatrolBaseAirportLoungeandhasconducted dozensofpatrolsinsupportofthelocalnationals.

AlongwithhisunithecompletedmanyjointclearanceoperationswithAfghanNational SecurityForcesuncoveringmanyimprovisedexplosivedevices,savingmanylivesinthe process.
