How do we teach Computing at Ashurst Wood Primary?

At Ashurst Wood children taught Computing in a way that ensures progression of knowledge and skills and follows a sequence to build on previous learning. We have designed a two-year rolling programme using materials from KPOW.

Each term our children are taught how to stay safe online and how to use technology responsibly, being mindful of how their behaviour, words and actions can affect others.

By the end of primary school, the children will be digitally literate and understand the benefits of technology and its limitations and link their learning to the world around them. Computing is an overarching subject and will be used throughout the curriculum where it can serve to aid learning.

Children work towards meeting the National Curriculum expectations. They are assessed against our progression of knowledge. This happens through teacher observation and ongoing assessments in a lesson. Knowledge quizzes and children presenting their work.

How do we teach Computing at Ashurst Wood Primary?

At Ashurst Wood the children have access to interactive televisions in every class along with a visualiser.

We have a shared class set of chrome books, one per child and some tablets.

We also have a class set of micro bits in Key Stage 2 and bee bots in Key Stage 1

Computing is taught discreetly in computing lessons as well as used to support other areas of the curriculum.

What do our children say?

I enjoy making transitions using PowerPoint Algorithms are fun. They make me use my maths brain. I know it is important to be safe when I use the internet! I loved using the micro bits, it is so cool. I can make the bee bot go round a corner.
