You have achieved grades C-E at GCSE, including at least a grade D in GCSE Art and Design.

You have an enthusiasm and willingness to explore a broad range of artistic media, materials and techniques.

You would like to develop the freedom to work on assignments of your own choice once you have learnt the basics.

What will I learn?

Contextual References in Art & Design You will examine the work of other artists, designers and craftspeople and use their ideas and techniques to inspire your work.

2D Visual Communication You will work with two-dimensional media and techniques which may include paint, pencil, charcoal as well as software such as Adobe Photoshop.

3D Visual Communication

The Art & Design department has excellent practical resources for all aspects of your coursework and teaching staff operate an ‘open door’ policy so you can always complete homework tasks or get extra subject support in the department, outside of your timetabled sessions. The course is also supported by the Learning Support team and learning mentors.

How will I be assessed?

You will work with three-dimensional materials and techniques which could include wire, card, clay and plaster.

Using Ideas to Explore, Develop and Produce Art & Design You will research, develop and produce a final piece, working to a brief of your own design.

Building an Art & Design Portfolio You will prepare your own work for progression interviews - for employment or further/higher level study.

Working in the Art & Design Industry You will develop your understanding of the Art & Design industry and the job opportunities within it.

There are no exams for this course – all assessment is through set assignments which you submit at various points through the year.

What activities can I get involved in?

You may have the opportunity to take part in visits to local Art Galleries, events and exhibitions such as the Liverpool Biennial. You will also work with and learn from artists and designers visiting the College. You will have the chance to produce work for local and national competitions and see it exhibited both externally and within College at the end of term.

The College has lots of exciting enrichment and C.V building opportunities including the chance to earn the Duke of Edinburgh’s Gold Award, learn a new skill, learn a language, join a club, take up or develop a sport or take on a new challenge. Where does it lead?

If you wish to take your Art & Design training further, students progressing from this course with a Distinction could carry on to study an AS/A2 in either Fine Art, Graphic Art or Textile Art. The creative industries are one of the biggest employers in the UK. Art and Design related subjects are valuable for careers in such fields as advertising, marketing, fashion design, graphic design, architecture, publishing and the media.
