ALPSIT NEWSLETTER Improving Our Schools Together

Hello everyone!

Happy end of term! (Well, for some.)

We have been adding our updates to the Education department weekly newsletters, this is to avoid bombarding you with emails. You will still receive these at the end of each half term and they will continue to be put up on the ASSEMBLE platform, let me know if you need help finding them on there.

We have been very busy this term arranging and attending lots of in person events. The headteacher spirituality and wellbeing residential was launched this term with 26 headteachers joining us at Thornton Hall Hotel for what was a wonderful time for reflection and rest! If you missed this please dont worry there is another to come in April. Places are limited so please book as soon as you can.

The ALPSIT Subject Leader Conference takes place on the 17th of March at The Spine in Liverpool. Hywel Roberts and Dr Debra Kidd will lead the day including a keynote from leadership specialist David Whittaker and an action packed afternoon of subject specific workshops! Dont miss out!

Please note although most of the events and CPD you will find amongst these pages wont incur a cost to your school they are part of your ALPSIT Membership, we are just in a position to put these on for you from our budget. Should anyone from your school book places and not turn up, unfortunately, we will have to charge for these places at a cost of £75pp.

The Literacy Company and ALPSIT 2023 About Us Established in September 2013 by Linda Neill and Catherine Richardson, The Literacy Company is a dynamic team of thirteen experienced and dedicated consultants, business support and marketing personnel who share a passion for English. We work with a range of schools throughout the UK and overseas to enhance the curriculum, improve standards and create positive outcomes for pupils whilst supporting a worklife balance for teachers.

Our aim is to share practical, effective and enjoyable strategies to enhance classroom teaching, working alongside head teachers and senior leaders to support whole school improvement of literacy across a range of schools.

Our Training Offer Supporting rapid progress – Back on track with writing Each 3-session course has been designed to aid teachers in ensuring that pupils working below age-related expectations in writing can be supported effectively in closing gaps and getting back on track in writing. Based on the latest research and recommendations, these sessions will provide year group specific practical advice and strategies that will have both immediate and long-term impact on pupil attainment.

Course Aims: · Identify factors which cause pupils to fall behind · Share the latest research and best practice for teaching writing · Provide practical strategies to support pupils in making rapid progress · Consider changes to practice across school which will impact on pupil progress in future · Support teachers in developing next steps for individual pupils · Provide practical gap tasks between sessions to allow teachers to see tangible progress in their pupils' writing

Subject Leader Conference 2023 CURRICULUM, CREATIVITY AND HOPE: A DAY OF PEDAGOGY, PRACTICE AND OPTIMISM FOR SCHOOL LEADERS KEYNOTE: 11:00 - 12:00 David Whitaker Dave is Director of Learning for the Wellspring Academy Trust. As a former Executive Principal of SEMH Special and Alternative Provision academies, he now works regionally supporting all 28 schools in the trust.

As well as Executive Headship, Dave spent 10 years as a National Leader of Education and teaching school head. He now leads Positive Regard - the trust’s behaviour training and outreach team. Dave works nationally supporting schools with behaviour training, drawing on years of experience working with the most complex and vulnerable of children.

Based on an ethos of ‘unconditional positive regard’ Dave believes schools should use relational practice to make them safe and caring places to learn.

Dave has recently been a member of the DFE’s Timpson Exclusions Review expert reference group, he is a founder member of the HeadTeachers' Roundtable think tank and is a trustee of The Difference. He has also given evidence on alternative provision to the government’s Education Select Committee. He is currently the PRU/AP representative on ASCL National Council. He is a regular speaker at conferences and an active campaigner for educational change. His recently published book, The Kindness Principle, offers advice, guidance and expertise on making relational practice work in schools. He is an associate of Independent Thinking Ltd.

Lisa's book 'Manglish' explores creative approaches to cross curricular literacy and numeracy.

"Solution Focused English Leadership" Lisa will help you to explore the problems you are currently facing as an English leader and teacher.

SCIENCE PROFESSOR LEIGH HOATH @LEIGHHOATH Prof Leigh Hoath is head of science education at Leeds Trinity University and is the co-founder of an alliance leading curriculum development concerning climate change education (CAPE). She is Chair-Elect of the Association for Science Education (ASE) as well as being a regular contributor to their conferences and publications. She is an author of science books across the primary and secondary age phases as well as the outreach and engagement consultant to the world’s largest chemical company (BASF). Leigh is also a consultant to BBC Teach where she developed the Blue Planet Live teacher resources and live lesson and most recently created the content for their climate and sustainability focussed campaign ‘The Regenerators’. Despite all these aspects of her work Leigh is most comfortable in the classroom with students and remains at heart a teacher.

Prof Leigh Hoath will highlight how to overcome challenges with the primary science curriculum - the increasing breadth of the subject, key pedagogical debates and the need to develop scientifically literature societies for a better future.

PE MOLLIE CROXON - YOUTH SPORTS TRUST @YouthSportTrust Mollie recently joined the Youth Sport Trust as the Development Manager for the North West, having previously worked as a School Games Organiser, Barclays Girls Football in Schools Lead, County Inclusion Lead as well as Development Coach for Shropshire, Telford & Wrekin. Mollie’s passion from an early age was sport, however this has developed into an interest around the wider benefits PE, sport & physical activity can bring, especially to mental wellbeing.

Working through an example of ‘structures’, we will explore the fundamentals of design and technology through focused tasks and a fun, practical, design and make activity. During the session we will discuss the opportunities for progression across years and key stages. Hopefully it will be ‘buzzing’…

Wellbeing Circles for Headteachers The idea of having wellbeing circles for headteachers was launched at the January Spirituality Conference and received positively.

These will be solution focused circles where headteachers will take time out to spend with other headteachers to focus on their wellbeing and help each other with problems in school and give each other ideas to reduce workload.

All participants will agree to confidentiality.

These circles will be facilitated by Diane Gallagher, a recently retired headteacher of our Archdiocese. We take the wellbeing of our headteachers very seriously and are offering these sessions free of charge.

Pupil Book Study:avoid making assumptions | It became apparent to me throughout my years in education that the most obvious thing we don’t do as leaders or teachers is the very thing we should be doing more of –talking to pupils to check the endurance of learning. The question was how to do that without feeling overwhelmed, underprepared and wasting valuable time asking questions that lack structure and impact. This is how Pupil Book Study began, with the need for an evidence-led systematic toolkit that enables leaders and teachers to focus on evaluating their curriculum, teaching and learning in a precise, research-rich environment. Having modelled and run bespoke CPD for Senior HMI and Ofsted Policy Makers, the impact of Pupil Book Study is positively shaping school improvement and national policy.

Lexia reading skills software research trial: School information sheet Overview In 2023–25, Queen’s University Belfast (QUB) and LexiaUK are partnering with the Education Endowment Foundation (EEF) and RAND Europe to evaluate the effectiveness of Lexia® Core5® Reading (Lexia).

The trial will assess the impact of Lexia on the reading skills of struggling readers in Year 2. This is an exciting opportunity for up to 224 primary schools in England to contribute to educational research.

The findings will help fellow schools like yours make an informed choice when deciding which interventions improve student outcomes based on empirical evidence.

Two cohorts of schools will take part in the trial: cohort 1 (112 schools) is running from June 2023 – July 2024, and cohort 2 will run from June 2024 – July 2025.

The evaluation findings will be reported after cohort 2 have completed the trial in 2025.

Who can take part?

To be eligible to participate in the trial, a school must meet the following criteria: • Have at least one full Year 2 class (i.e., no split year groups) • Not currently involved in any other EEF trial focusing on Year 2 • Have not held a Lexia licence in the 12 months prior to July 2022 (for cohort 1) and July 2023 (cohort 2) • Able to provide the necessary IT technology required to support the intervention.

What is the Lexia® Core5® Reading programme?

The Lexia® Core5® Reading programme (Lexia) is a computer-based Independent Learning System (ILS) for reading provided by LexiaUK. Lexia provides personalised practice and instruction in all key skill areas which make a successful reader (R-Y6).

Although some schools use Lexia across the age and ability range, it is more commonly used as a targeted intervention for pupils, which is how we will evaluate the program (with selected pupils from Year 2). Pupils can use Lexia with minimal supervision, but the teacher or teaching assistant overseeing the programme is expected to monitor pupils’ usage and provide additional support as and when required.

A previous EEF-funded evaluation of Lexia found that struggling readers made on average one additional month progress in reading compared to struggling readers who did not receive Lexia. Based on these findings, the EEF have funded this second, larger research project to test the programme's effectiveness when delivered at greater scale.

What does the programme involve?

This technology-led solution allows pupils to work independently on all key areas which make a successful reader (R-Y6). Lexia includes practise and instruction in phonological awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, comprehension skills and spelling and grammar rules. As pupils progress through their personalised pathway, teachers can access progress reports which informs planning and instruction. Furthermore, if the teacher feels additional support is required, a large bank of printable resources can be accessed which includes lesson plans, independent worksheets and class activity exercises.

LexiaUK provides full training and ongoing support to ensure the programme is implemented with fidelity. To enable teaching staff to use Lexia for instruction, the identified lead Lexia teacher, selected teaching assistants, and senior school leaders will be provided with online training. There will be one introductory session and up to three training sessions, which will cover the following areas: (a) setting up pupils on the Lexia system; (b) monitoring and providing instruction with the aid of Lexia; and (c) using data generated by Lexia to inform their teaching. Schools should allot up to 1 hour and 30 minutes for each training session. Please note: to make best use of the programme, the school should plan to ensure Lexia is used regularly and senior management are involved in training and implementation sessions.

Schools selected to deliver Lexia will be expected to schedule four to five sessions per week, over the course of 24 weeks, with selected Year 2 pupils. Each session should last around 30 minutes (including 10 minutes for logging on and off).

Study and funding details This study is a Randomised Controlled Trial (RCT) in Year 2 across 224 schools. Half of participating schools will be randomly allocated to receive Lexia (intervention group) whilst the remaining half will be asked to continue with business as usual (control group). Each school has an equal chance of being allocated to the intervention group or control group.

Intervention schools These schools will be issued with a three-year licence for use with up to 50 pupils and will pay £350 inc. VAT to LexiaUK as a nominal school contribution. This represents a discount of 92% as the bulk of the cost will be funded by the EEF to support schools to participate in this research trial. As part of the trial, intervention schools will deliver the programme for up to 24 weeks, to a selected group of 816 struggling Year 2 readers, as identified by their teacher. Schools can use the additional licences with other pupils over the three years.

Control schools These schools will not receive the Lexia programme but are able to receive £1,000 for full participation in the trial, including completing all necessary pupil assessments. Control group schools make an important contribution to understanding the effectiveness of the programme. Control schools will continue with usual teaching and intervention delivery during the trial (business as usual).

What does taking part in the evaluation involve?

RAND Europe have been selected as the independent evaluators for this intervention. They will assess the impact of the programme on Year 2 struggling readers’ outcomes using a standardised reading test administered by their partners, Elklan.

Professional test administrators will visit schools to administer one to one testing with pupils that schools identified to participate in Lexia. Testers will arrange to visit schools once in summer (2023 for cohort 1, 2024 for cohort 2) and again in the following summer (2024 for cohort 1, 2025 for cohort 2). In total, we expect test administration to take approximately 35 minutes for each child. The evaluation will follow the timeline below, for each cohort:

Requisite to participating in this trial, schools should be willing to share pertinent pupil and staff data, which will be protected by the delivery and evaluation teams in accordance with the Data Protection Act of 2018 and the guidelines set by General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). The detailed list of data that schools are expected to provide will be included in a Memorandum of Understanding, which schools will need to sign and return to formalise their participation.
