WELCOME TO THE START OF YOUR FUTURE IN THE CREATIVE INDUSTRIES Huddersfield New College is an outstanding College. Our Art and Design department offers the opportunity to study the Foundation Diploma in Art and Design, an innovative and intense one year course.

Exploring a huge range of disciplines, you will further extend and develop your creative potential before you select and focus on a personal creative specialism.

Find out about this exciting and innovative course which is ideal if you: • Intend to progress to higher education or a creative profession and want the opportunity to explore and be challenged across a range of specialisms • Enjoy subjects such as Art, Graphic Communication, Fine Art, Ceramics, Photography, Games Design and Life Drawing and wish to explore new and exciting disciplines that support a future career in the creative industries • Would like an exciting opportunity to be challenged and develop new ways of thinking and life-long creative and problem-solving skills • Need to build an outstanding portfolio to support progression and inform decision making about next steps

HOW IS THE COURSE STRUCTURED? • Exploratory This is 7 - 10 weeks of structured progression which is delivered through ‘experience building workshops’ including drawing, contextual studies, graphic communication, fine art, textile techniques, sculpture, ceramics, photography, life drawing and digital applications. This is a real chance to explore exciting new topics and see which suits you.

• Pathway Over 12 weeks, you will specialise in a subject area of choice, and develop your understanding of that area through extending your personal portfolio. You will work through extended personal project briefs.

• Confirmatory The final stage is a Final Major Project. This is delivered and externally assessed and will see you develop your ideas independently. This includes your work being showcased in a special exhibition.

Art Foundation student, Paris, initially planned to progress straight from A Levels to university, but felt that taking a year out to study the subject further at HNC would better prepare her for her undergraduate degree.

She’s spent the past year exploring a range of artistic disciplines, stretching herself to expand her knowledge of a range of media and materials, from photography to sculpture.

Paris is currently working on a contemporary project with moulded concrete, exploring the themes of temporary and permanent structures.

The project was inspired by a recent trip to Berlin with the Art department, where Foundation students visited an abandoned theme park. During the trip, Paris experienced people who chose to live on the fringes of society, and it was this that inspired this unique project.

Paris, says “I’m so glad I chose to take a year to study the Art Foundation Diploma. I’ve discovered so much about myself, and I have been challenged to explore a variety of different artistic concepts that would not have been open to me had I not chosen to study this course; I feel so much more confident in my skills. I really feel that I will now be in a position to make the most of the Fine Art course at Northumbria when I progress”.

Entry criteria Two A2 qualifications at C and above, including an Art and Design subject or a Level 3 Art and Design Diploma or Extended Diploma (with overall grade minimum MM or MMM desirable). English GCSE Grade 4 or above and/or Functional Skills Level 2 Communication.

A successful interview, a strong portfolio of work and a satisfactory reference are also required.
