How to support your child’s learning at home The Year 6 children will be given set tasks to complete in their SAT’s Revision Books. Please support your child in their home learning and ensure they hand the books in on time each week.

All the children have personal log in details for Times Table Rockstars. Just 5 minutes play a day makes a massive difference to the rapid recall of facts and it is great fun too!

Our Reading Races celebrate our home reading. Everyone is expected to read for 10 minutes a day.

Make sure you know your targets and are constantly striving to achieve them.

Curriculum Overview Year 6 Spring 1 Miss Payne, Mrs Holden, Mr Heseldon, Mrs Malik

English: During this half term, our work in English will be based around the book Gulliver’s Journey, an abridged version of the classic Gulliver’s Travels. This will help us gain a better understanding of challenging vocabulary and we will work creatively using drama and cooperative learning to help explore ideas. We will write log books about our adventures to inspire other explorers.

Creative Curriculum: Magnificent Maya Our creative curriculum theme on the ancient Maya civilization will enable us to delve deeply into history to learn about the lives of people living in Central America from 2000BC through to 900AD. We will focus our learning around the Classic period from 250AD to 900AD as we discover about remarkable cities, number systems, writing and calendars.

Maths: This half term we are focusing on developing reasoning skills in preparation for the SATs. We will learn about sequences, coordinates, translation and reflection, statistics (mean), measurement (temperature) and calculating with fractions. Alongside this, we will be working to improve our mental arithmetic skills using the most efficient methods.

Science: This half term, we will be studying the natural world, particularly how animals and plants can be grouped. We will learn about important scientists who developed classification systems for living things, with an in depth look at Carl Linnaeus. In addition, we will look in depth at the rainforest habitats in Central America and will research the different plants and animals found there.

Geography: We will build on our map reading skills and looking at a range of geographical pictures.

These will be used to explore the reasons why the Maya people choose to build their civilizations in the depths of the rainforest.

History: In History, we will be exploring the Maya writing system and how it was used. Children will also consider how the Maya Civilization impacted on the World today.

PE:

This terms PE topics will cover gymnastics and dance. Children will work independently and collaboratively to develop their own movements and routines to music. Pupils will be encouraged to express themselves while also developing core strength and balance.

:Rights Respecting School Throughout the term, pupils will focus on the children’s right of Article 24. This informs us that all children have a right to the best health care, safe water, nutritious food and clean and safe environment to live in.
