TOP TIPS FOR HELPING YOUR CHILD WITH SPELLINGS 1. Pick a good time – not when your child is tired or hungry. Choose a time when you can support your child and make the learning fun. 2. If you practice them a little and often you are more likely to remember them in the future! 3. Make it multi-sensory! Using all the senses can help words to ‘stick’ in our minds. Try using sand, glue, paint, magnetic/sticky letters, play-dough etc. to make the words. You could use a different colour for the tricky part of the word to make it more memorable. Write the spellings on cakes, make a graffiti wall…go wild! 4. Use Look, Say, Cover, Write, Check method rather than simply copying the words out each time.

5. Encourage your child to really look at the word with the intention of remembering it, a quick glance won’t do! Think of it as taking a photo with your eyes! 6. Write the words on post-it notes and dot them around your house so your child can ‘spot’ them. Find them in books, papers, posters etc. Cut out the letters from magazines and build the tricky spellings with the letters.
