Curriculum Information Reading In Year 5 we are still learning to read, even though we may be able to read the words easily. We now focus on comprehension of texts and explaining our understanding in a clear way. It is still important to read every day. In class, we will do Shared (whole class) and Guided (group) reading to learn new skills. We should try to do some reading at home – just 5 minutes per day can make a big difference. We use colour bands to make sure books are matched to ability – see our website for details. Every child has a BUG CLUB login and can access hundreds of interactive books online. We also have home reading books and library books for children to enjoy at home. Our new reading challenge linked to the World Cup will begin this half term. Children should record home reading in their record and collect certificates and prizes along the way. Homework We may sometimes need to do homework to prepare us for a new topic or to consolidate our skills/knowledge. This can be a short piece of homework or an extended project to be done over a period of weeks. It is important that homework is completed on time as it is set to link with our learning in class. Every child has a SUMDOG login to access interactive maths games online. Your child may also have an IDL login. P.E. We have now finished swimming and this term we will be focusing of target games and invasion games. P.E will be on a Tuesday and a Wednesday although it is useful to have kits in school each day. Children will need: blue shorts, blue t-shirt and trainers/pumps as well as something warm as some lessons may take place outdoors.
Assessments Throughout the year we will have our learning assessed in different ways so that our teachers can plan lessons that meet our needs and help us to reach our goals. Our teachers will assess us through the work we do every day and sometimes we may be given short tests. We will develop our test strategies to prepare us for Year 6 and high school.
Thematic Learning During the first half-term, our theme is: The Shang Dynasty where we will mainly be developing our knowledge and skills in history. For the second half of the term our theme will be ‘How did Benin begin?’ which will focus on history and geography skills. Finally, we will be covering ‘Down Memory Lane’, learning about the sixties and what our school was like during this decade. This will then feed in to our class assembly.
When was the last time your child’s sight and hearing were tested? Children can quickly fall behind if they are struggling to see and hear. If your child wears glasses, please make sure they bring them to school every day.
