Welcome to Year 2

Year 2 Curriculum Enrichment

Dear Parents, Welcome to Year 2. Over the course of this year your child will be encouraged to become more independent in preparation for moving to the Juniors.

Outlined in this booklet is some useful information for the coming year.

E-Mail Please note that e-mailing teachers should be reserved for issues such as:  Informing staff of appointments such as doctors, dentist etc.

Please also copy the office into any email sent to your child’s class teacher.

Informing staff of a change to pick up / drop off arrangements.

(If the change occurs during the school day, please inform the school office, as teachers do not always have time to check their emails regularly throughout the school day.) 



Requesting an appointment to see a teacher.

Addressing minor queries such as questions about homework, upcoming trips, school events, etc.



Emailing a class talk.



The e-mail system should not be used to address issues regarding your child’s education or well-being that would be better suited to a one-to-one conversation.

School Information

Year 5 and Year 2 Buddies

Uniform Please ensure your child’s uniform is clearly labelled with his/her full name. It is easier to track down a misplaced item if the owner’s name is clearly visible. This applies to all items of clothing, including P.E. kits.

P.E. Kit P.E. kits should be brought to school in a Corpus Christi P.E. bag on a Monday morning and taken home on a Friday. If your child does not have their P.E. kit they cannot participate in their P.E. lessons.

Tracksuits will be available to order for the cold weather, however this is in addition to the children’s P.E. kit. Please ensure you send all items into school, as P.E. lessons can be outdoors or indoors. As mentioned above, all items of kit should have your child’s name clearly labelled. Children are encouraged to bring their own trainers into school for P.E. lessons which take place outside, but they are not essential and their plimsoles must remain in their P.E. bag at all times. If children attend an after-school club and take their P.E. kit home, please ensure that it is back in school the following day.

If your child is unable to participate in P.E. for any reason, we require a note from parents explaining the reasons for this.

Money At Corpus Christi School we use ParentPay to make payments for any services that your child may access whilst at school such as school meals, trips, music and other services.

The school uniform shop, stocks items which are Corpus Christi specific and can be accessed through the ParentPay shop via our school website.

School Information

Punctuality and Lining Up Children stand in line order upon entering the playground. After the bell has rung, the children stand in silence. If a child is not in line when the bell is rung they will be marked in the register as late. We encourage parents to say goodbye to their children before the bell is rung and allow them to line up independently.

Hometime Children should be collected from under the shelter in the Infant playground. We ask parents to vacate the shelter when the children arrive to allow room for them to sit and wait to be collected. Your child should let their teacher or teaching assistant know when someone has arrived to collect them.

If you have to make ‘last minute’ changes to who is collecting your child, you must inform the office who will then inform the class teacher. If the class teacher is not aware of a change to pick up arrangements, it will have to be confirmed before your child can leave school premises.

Are you free on a Thursday afternoon and would like to volunteer to listen to children read in school?

The aim of the scheme is to provide children with increased opportunities to read aloud on a one to one basis and to develop their enjoyment and confidence in reading.

If you are able to help by listening to children read, please inform your child’s class teacher so you will be able to be added to the rota for the Autumn Term.

Buddies The children will be assigned a Year 5 ‘buddy’. During the course of the year, the children will be given the opportunity to spend time with their buddy. This might include sharing their work, reading stories together and where applicable, local school trips.

The buddy system has proven to be very successful supporting children making the transition from the Infants to the Juniors.

School Council and Green Team Children in Year 2 take on some important leadership roles.

They have their first opportunity to be elected onto the School Council and Green Team. If your child puts themselves forward for this role and is chosen by their classmates to prepare a brief presentation/talk about it at home, the talk should outline the reasons why they would be well suited to this role. If your child is chosen as a candidate, you will be informed a few days before they are due to present to the class to ensure that there is some time for you to help them with their presentation.

Contact with Teachers How to see a Class Teacher Our aim is to involve parents as much as possible in school life.

Teachers are always pleased to see parents to discuss any issues that may have arisen and are available in the playground most mornings from 8.45am.

However, it may be necessary to make an appointment if you feel that you will need more than just a few minutes of the teacher’s time. You can do this by contacting your child’s class teacher via email. Please remember that during lesson times, the teacher’s time belongs to the children.

Weekly School Newsletter: This is emailed and published online every Friday and contains important information about upcoming events and activities happening in school during the week. Paper copies of the newsletter are available in the school office.

Year 2 Termly Newsletters These are sent out at the start of each term outlining the topics that the children will be studying and the ways in which parents can help support their learning.

Termly Parent Evenings A formal opportunity to discuss your child’s progress with their class teacher.

End of Year Written Report This is given out at the end of the Summer Term.

Curriculum Enrichment Curriculum Enrichment We organise a variety of educational visits throughout the year which relate to the topics the children are studying in school. If a packed lunch is required, please ensure it is placed within a disposable bag with your child’s name clearly marked on it. Please note, nut products are not permitted within school.

Children are expected to wear full uniform unless otherwise stated; school hats and blazers are essential.

We encourage parents to join us on educational visits when possible.

Where places are limited, we will allocate these on a first come, first served basis and we will try to offer as many parents as possible the opportunity to join us on at least one school trip during the year. If you are able to join us on a school trip please make sure you are aware of our parent’s guidance for accompanying us on a school trip.

We also invite visitors and theatre companies into school at certain times throughout the year, in order to enhance the children’s learning.

Homework

Uniform

Reading: Your child will be given a reading book from our school reading scheme; this will be changed on a weekly basis.

This book is a teaching tool for group reading, grammar focuses and comprehension. Children will also have the opportunity to take home a book from our school library and are encouraged to read books from their local library and books they have at home, in order to develop their reading skills. Parents are encouraged to enjoy reading with their child on a regular basis. Please sign their reading record and phonics log at least once a week.

Parents are asked to ensure that the children always wear the correct school uniform. Please make sure that all uniform, including shoes and PE kit is clearly labelled with your child’s name.

Spellings: Your child will receive a list of words each Friday to learn for a test the following Friday. Please support your child in learning these words over the week, encourage them to complete the LOOK, SAY, COVER, WRITE, CHECK sheet each day and return it to their class every Friday. You may find some spelling patterns or words are repeated; this is part of the KS1 SPaG’s requirements and helps to reinforce the more common spelling patterns and rules. It is important that the children are responsible for their spelling sheet and they recognise this as a homework activity.

English & Maths: Your child will receive one piece of English and Maths homework every Thursday. This should be completed and returned on or before Tuesday of the following week.

Both pieces of homework will be sent home in a homework folder. Please sign each piece of work to show that you have seen it. Homework will always be explained to the children in class, however, should any confusion remain, please do not hesitate to speak to your child’s class teacher.



Shoes: All children must wear sensible black shoes, ideally with a child-friendly fastening. Boots and footwear with flashing lights are not permitted.



Jewellery: The children are only permitted to wear gold stud earrings.



Coats: School coats must be navy blue and should not display any logos.



Hair: 

Plain navy blue hair bands or slides may be worn



Hair extensions may not be worn in school Boys should have a sensible hair cut. Long hair, steps, lines or shaved patterns are not permitted



Assessment The progress of Year 2 children will be continually assessed throughout the year.

Year 2 children will also sit formal assessments in Reading, Writing, SPaGs and Mathematics which help to further inform teachers and parents about individual progress and attainment.

These assessments take place at the end of each term.

We do not send homework or spellings home during assessment weeks, class assembly weeks and over the school holidays.

Instead the children may need to either learn their assembly lines or relax after school.

There will be a meeting for parents in the Spring Term to discuss the End of Key Stage 1 Statutory Assessments Tasks (SATs) which will take place within the Summer Term.

Phonics & Class Talks Phonics and SPaGs (Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar) The Year 2 children will have a discrete SPaG lesson every Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday (which will cover the spelling patterns in Phase 6 of the Letters and Sounds phonic programme).

Class Talks Class talks replace ‘Show and Tell’ in Year 2. Children are expected to choose a topic which interests them and talk to the class for approximately 5 minutes about this topic. Some children also choose to bring objects in to show the class. In the past some children have prepared Power Point presentations with their family; this is welcomed but it is not expected. Each child is given a date for their Class talk, so they have the opportunity to prepare in advance for their presentation.

Topics in the past have included: family pets, holidays and hobbies.

Below are the Autumn Term dates for Class Talks. Please email the class teacher any presentations as we can no longer use USB keys/memory sticks within school.

How can I help my child?

Writing Writing sentences and checking they make sense.  Practise spelling the common exception words and using them in sentences.

The Curriculum Literacy

Writing



Use adjectives to describe nouns.  Use conjunctions (connectives) ‘and, ‘so’ ‘but’ and ‘because’ to extend sentences.  Practise joined handwriting following the school’s handwriting policy. 

Maths  Use a 100 square, counting forwards and backwards to support arithmetic. 

10 more, 10 less, 1 more , 1 less with 2 digit numbers.



Place value: Identifying tens and units.
