Dear Parents, How to see a Class Teacher

The Year 1 staff warmly welcome you as your children make the move from the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) to Key Stage 1 (KS1).

We look forward to working in partnership with you

over the coming academic year.

Our aim is to involve parents as much as possible in school life. Teachers are always pleased to see parents to discuss any concerns that they may have and are available most mornings from 8.30am without an appointment. However, it may be necessary to make an appointment if you feel that you will needs more than just a few minutes of the teacher’s time. You can do this by contacting the school office, and the staff there will make the necessary arrangements for you.

Welcome to Year 1

School Uniform

Welcome to Year 1! This year is an exciting and important time for your child as they move from the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) into Key Stage 1 (KS1) and the National Curriculum. This booklet aims to give you information about the changes you and your child can expect in September, and ideas on how you can help them to pre-



Parents are asked to ensure that the children always wear the correct school uniform.



Please make sure all uniform is clearly labelled with your child’s name.



Shoes: all children must wear sensible black shoes. Heels should not be higher than 3cm and ideally with a childfriendly, Velcro fastening. Boots are not allowed.



Jewellery: Children with pierced ears may wear plain gold or silver ear studs. No other items of jewellery may be worn in

school. 

Hats, blazers, ties, pullovers and summer dresses must be purchased from the school office. Other items may be purchased from chain stores.



Hair: girls should not wear decoration in their hair other than a plain blue hair band or slides. Hair that can be must be tied back.



Hair extensions may not be worn in school.



Boys should have a sensible hair cut. Long hair, steps, lines or shaved patterns are not allowed.

Lining Up and Collection When you first arrive at school in the morning the children are expected to go straight to their class line order ready to be taken in at 8:45am. The children are put into line order so they know exactly where they are expected to line up every day. The children are not permitted to go on the climbing frame before school and we ask that you say goodbye to your child in the line, encouraging them to line up quietly. The class teacher will also be available at 8:45am when the children are taken into class.

It is important to ensure that your child is collected promptly at the end of the school day. The children will be released to you individually when the teacher has seen the adult responsible for collection. This can take some time so please be patient and do not call your child away without the teacher releasing

Reading in Year 1

Interaction between Classes

Reading in Year 1 is taught through English and phonics lessons as well as in discrete guided reading sessions. The class teacher will continue to give a high priority to the teaching of reading during Year 1. Your child will continue with the Oxford Reading Tree scheme begun in Reception, and teachers will continue to write in your PACT books so that you know what the focus of each session will be and how to support your child’s reading at home. The children will be given two new books each week for the first term and then will be given one new book each week

From Year 1 onwards the classes are generally taught separately and remain in their own classrooms. However all Year 1 children will have the opportunity to play together in the playground and during shared areas in structured play

It is very important that you read a wide variety of texts to your child, including fiction and non-fiction books, magazines, recipes, comics, shopping lists, internet pages etc. Remember to let your child see you enjoying reading too.

Playtime At morning break, the children will take their playtime with the Year 2 in the Nursery Playground. A particularly close eye is kept on the Year 1 children to ensure they experience a relaxing playtime. The playground is well equipped with toys, apparatus and climbing equipment, and staff who are well versed at playground games.

Homework From Year 1 onwards, all children will receive weekly homework which must be completed and returned to your child’s class teacher. Homework will begin once the children are settled after the first half-term. It may encompass English, Maths and weekly spellings to learn. It is sent home on a Thursday and is due in the following Tuesday.

Golden Time On a Friday afternoon, children will receive a session of Golden Time where they will play in the classrooms, shared areas or the playground as appropriate. While Golden Time is given as a reward for hard work during the week, play remains vital to the development of young children, support-

Show and Tell From Year 1, children are invited to give a ‘Show and Tell’ to members of their class on a topic of their choice on a date set by the class teacher.

Children often bring in props to bring their talks to life. They are highly valuable in developing children’s speaking, language and confidence, and are thoroughly enjoyed by the class and staff alike. You will receive more information about Class Talks in September.

What did you do at school today?

Children in Year 1 follow a topic based Creative Curriculum based on the National Curriculum objectives and skills.

These topics will include the subjects listed below. Other subjects are delivered discretely. Lessons in Year 1 incorporate whole-class, group and individual work as well as balancing direct and interactive teaching, and practical and theoretical learning.

Letters and Sounds (Phonics) All children in Year 1 follow the national Letters and Sounds programme, which is delivered daily. This will follow and build upon the work begun in Nursery and Reception, teaching the children increasingly complex sounds and how to apply them to reading and writing.

Our phonics programme is tailored to meet the needs of the children so that they are all working at the appropriate level. In addition, after October half term children will receive weekly spellings to support their learning.

Phonics Screening Check The Phonics Screening Check takes place in all Year 1 classes in June. It checks if all children have reached the appropriate standard in Phonics.

The teacher works one-to-one with the child to read a list of 40 real and pseudo (not real) words.

Pictures of imaginary creatures are used next to the pseudo words to help the children realise that they are not real words.

There will be more information about the Phonics Screening Check nearer the time.
