Head’s Message

Dear Parents, Carers and Students, As I write this introduction I am in the glorious surroundings of the North Yorkshire Dales with our Silver Duke of Edinburgh groups on their three day expedition. It is a real pleasure to spend time with this group of students and staff and seeing these students achieve something so worthwhile – despite the heat and sunshine which is making the walking challenging! This expedition, and the others that have taken place this year, is just one example of the many opportunities our students have to learn outside of the classroom and experience so much of what is good in the world in the midst of the terror and tragedy which is so prevalent at the moment.

As we come towards the end of the school year I would like to say a huge thank you to all the staff who make the extra-curricular opportunities possible and who give so generously of their time. Some of those events you will read about in these pages and I hope they give you a flavour of what we stand for as a school.

This time of year is always one where we look back to all that has been done, taught, learned and achieved over the school year and as a school we look forward to celebrating these at the Year 11 and 13 Proms and our celebration Rewards Evening and assemblies in July. With exams drawing to a close, Year 11 and 13 can hopefully relax over the summer and we look forward to seeing them on Results Days in August.

So many students throughout the school deserve recognition for their contribution to the school and for faithfully doing the right thing at the right time in the right place, day in day out, and it is always a joy to recognise these students at celebration events and assemblies in the summer term. As we look back it is also right to say a big thank you to those staff who will be leaving us this summer and we wish them well, whether retiring or moving on to new employment.

This time of year is also a time to look forward as we finalise school priorities for next year, welcome the new students at transition events and prepare to welcome the new staff who will be joining us in September. I hope our new students and staff will soon feel very much at home here and share our vision of pursuing excellence in a community they feel proud to belong to.

Please do enjoy reading these pages in our summer magazine and I wish you and your families a very enjoyable, safe summer.

Outdoor Adventures atfor Borwick Year 7 students raise £2,000 animalHall charity 60 adventurous students took a residential trip to Borwick Hall earlier this term where they partook in a range of outdoor pursuits.

Pupils experienced canoeing, assault walls, brushcraft, orienteering, night walks and lots more. They stayed Friday through to Sunday and slept in the 16th century manor house.

Students took part in around four different activities each day they spent at the residential outdoor education centre. All activities were designed to help pupils gain confidence, learn new things and develop awareness of the importance of key life skills such as team building and resilience.

PE teacher Mr Doughty said: “We have been running this trip for a number of years and we always receive a great response from students. Spending the weekend outdoors trying new sports and activities enables them to develop skills, make new friends and discover new interests. This year’s Year 7’s were fantastic. They really got stuck into all the activities and told staff how much they enjoyed the weekend. I’m sure they will take the skills they learnt over the course of the trip into other areas of their life.”

Harry & Joe Bowled Over to Represent Fylde

Year 8 students Harry and Joe were selected to represent Fylde & Blackpool Under 13’s District Cricket Club after two days of competion against boys from a number of other local clubs. They are part of a 15 strong team who played against Blackburn with Darwen at the end of May. Harry, who has played cricket since the age of five, said, “It’s my favourite sport. It’s an honour to be able to play for the district team and I feel very proud”.

Joe said, “I didn’t think I’d get picked, but I’m really proud that I did. I’m looking forward to the game and will just do my best and enjoy playing with a lot of stand-out players”.

Headteacher Mr Waller said: “On behalf of the school community, I would like to congratulate Harry and Joe on this fantastic achievement and wish them well for their future in cricket”.

2017 Prom Highlights The 27th June was a momentous day for our Year 11 students as they enjoyed a plethora of events to celebrate the end of their high school careers, culminating with a glamorous prom.

Following a leavers’ breakfast, assembly and of course Luke Salisbury’s Top Knot Chop, the students departed to get ready for the annual Prom, held at The Villa in Wrea Green.

As expected it was a glamorous affair with students arriving in style and dressed to the nines. A three course meal followed drinks on arrival, before the night continued with a Student Award Ceremony and dancing until late.

Deputy Head, Miss Jordinson said, “Having worked hard throughout their GCSEs, and especially over the last few weeks of exams, the students deserved a night to end Year 11 in style and we hope everyone had a fantastic evening”.

Wonderland Stories Capture Imaginations of ‘Young Writers’ The imagination and creativity of several of our Year 8 students have led to them becoming published writers.

Class 81C were challenged by Ms Fry to enter a creative writing competition run by national organisation Young Writers. Several of the class entered a one hundred word short story on the theme of ‘Welcome to Wonderland’ and six of the entries were chosen to be featured in the upcoming book.

Ms Fry said, “I’m thrilled that so many of our entries have been chosen. It is a great achievement and encouragement for all the students chosen and is testament to their vivid imaginations, creative thinking and flare for writing. We are sure that they will continue with their excellent creative writing and wish them every success!”

Huge congratulations to Emily in CE7, Rebecca in AP4, Jessica in MI4, Charlotte in ME4, Phoebe in AP3 Emily in JU6 on your fantastic achievement.

Girls’ Football team Strike Out at PNE Students from Years 7 and 8 recently took part in a EURO 2017 girls’ football competition organised by local club Preston North End in light of the women’s Euro Championships this summer.

Held at North End, the girls had the privilege of playing on the pitch. PE teacher Mr Doughty said, “the girls were superb as always and a credit to the school. We had two equal strength teams and Team 1 came 3rd place, only losing on penalties”.

Year 7 student Cloe said, “Each team was given a country to represent and we were Belgium. We painted our faces and wore ribbons in their colours. Playing at PNE with my friends on the team was a great experience”.

Students from Year 7 visited Ribby with Wrea Primary School to lead a session as part of the school’s Faith Day. The day involved pupils across all years learning about the six major world religions. Carr Hill staff and pupils led an interactive lesson with a group of year four, five and six pupils looking at the ‘Philosophy of God.’

and some pupils had the opportunity to make ‘God’ using PlayDoh. Carr Hill pupils also read poems and stories to the children to help them understand some difficult concepts about what God is like.

Year 7 Harry said, “It was a lot of fun; I really enjoyed the chance to work in a team with friends.”

The Year 7’s planned, prepared and delivered the activities themselves, with help from RS teacher Mr Churm. They helped the primary school pupils to write acrostic poems and explore the idea of ‘God’ from different religions

One of the highlights of the session was the Year 7’s trying to persuade the primary children that their random object was most like God. Arguments were put forward for how a pineapple, bird and phone are all good metaphors for God,

but the winning suggestion, as voted on by the primary school audience, was a candle nominated by Jennifer.

Mr Churm said, “I was incredibly impressed with the enthusiasm, dedication and creativity of our year 7’s. They were excellent ambassadors for Carr Hill and the primary school children really enjoyed themselves and went away with a better understanding of some difficult philosophical ideas. Well done and thank you very much to all those involved.”

Students Hit the Right Note in Music Exams A group of students have successfully completed music exams, and been awarded with grades ranging from 1-5, following school organised tuition.

Students in Year 7, 8 and 9 have undertaken and passed flute and vocal exams of varying levels. The students are just five of over 30 Carr Hill High School pupils who benefit from one on one lessons during school hours. The school’s music department encourage any student interested in learning to sing or play an instrument to take lessons, which can be part or fully funded in many instances. The school currently offers lessons teaching pupils to play the piano, the guitar, the violin and more.

Year 9 Jess was awarded a grade five (equivalent to a GCSE) in flute. Jess said: “The exam does make you nervous but it’s over quickly. I’m going to start working towards a grade 6 with my school tutor soon.”

Music teacher Miss Dawson said: “We encourage all our students to take up the opportunity to learn an instrument.

As a school we can organise tutors for a wide range of instruments and it doesn’t matter what ability a student is. It is great to see pupils improving each week and then going on to achieve higher and higher grades. If anyone is interested in tuition they should get in touch with me via the school reception.”

The exams last anything up to 30 minutes and vary depending on the grade students are hoping to achieve.

Thinking of Manchester Students from across all years were invited to a special art event in the aftermath of the Manchester bombing.

The event was organised by art teacher Miss Wignall to pass on messages of sympathy, condolences and support to all those affected, and as an act of solidarity, not only with the people of Manchester, but also the wider community, including other local schools.

Miss Wignall said “many of our students have been deeply shocked by this tragic incident, and I wanted to give them an opportunity to talk openly about how they are feeling, as well as them being able to pass on messages of support through sharing their work on social media, demonstrating our support for Manchester and the people of the Northwest. Art in its nature is very cathartic and it was encouraging to see that by the end of the session a lot of the students were leaving really less anxious about the situation.”

Students Grow a Crop at Gardening Club From celery to chrysanthemums and sweet peas to potatoes, our green fingered students have been enjoying sowing seeds and reaping the rewards.

Every Monday and Wednesday afternoons after school, a team of budding gardeners have been working hard at the school allotment and various other locations within the grounds to grow a plethora of fruit, vegetables and flowers. The students get to take home the produce to enjoy with their families.

Mrs Gould, who runs the initiative said, “It’s a great way for students to learn new skills, work as a team and enjoy the benefits afterwards. We’re always on the lookout for new volunteers so if you’re interested in joining us please come along”.

Lord Lieutenant’s Cadet meets the Prince of Wales Year 12 student Ben was invited to meet the Prince of Wales at BAE in Samlesbury as part of HRH’s tour of the Ribble Valley. Ben was introduced to Prince Charles by Lord Shuttleworth (the Queen’s personal representative for Lancashire) before accompanying both men on a tour of BAE. Ben said: “I shook hands with Prince Charles and chatted with him for a few minutes. He asked me about what I was doing now and what I wanted to do in the future. I told him I was keen to join the army and he said we needed more people like that.

He was what I expected and came across as any normal person would.”

Ben was selected to be the Lord Lieutenant’s cadet in September 2016. Cadets are selected in recognition of exceptional achievements and attend a number of functions alongside their Lord Lieutenant. Ben was also invited by Lord Shuttleworth to Blackburn Cathedral for the installation of the Dean of Blackburn, as well as attending a private drinks reception for the installation of Robert Mitchell Webb JP as the High Sheriff of Lancashire. As part of his role, which began in September 2016 and finishes in September 2017, Ben will attend a number of prestigious events by invite from the Lord Lieutenant.

Snapshot: A Year in the Life of Head Boy Year 13 Jack, was elecetd Head Boy for this academic year. Here he tells us about his experiences and highlights.

I was over the moon after receiving the prestigious role of Head Boy and was really looking forward to the task at hand despite the weight of responsibility of being a positive role model to the younger students and representing the school to the best of my ability.

Throughout my time as Head Boy I have had the opportunity to be involved with many aspects of school life. Public speaking in assemblies and open evenings has really helped with me to overcome the hurdles of having a stutter and boosted my confidence, and being involved in planning and organising various events has developed my leadership and organisational skills.

Throughout my time as Head Boy I have thoroughly enjoyed working alongside the Head Girl, Alice and our Sixth Form committee. We had regular meetings to discuss and plan events or things that were going on in the Sixth Form. Our final assignment was to plan the Year 13 Leavers’ Do at Solita’s in Preston. We look forward to it with much excitement and have very faith it will end our school careers on a high. It has been a great year for me, and I’d like to take this opportunity to wish Eliza Tiffen and Ben Wilson good luck as they take over the roles from September.

local community Politics Students gain Industry Insight Year 13 students had a glimpse into the world of politcs when a local MP visited the Sixth Form to share some tips and advise for our budding politicians.

Students studying for their Government and Politics A-Level, had the opportunity to find out more about what a career in politics is all about when local MP Mark Menzies visted. They were also given tips and advice about studying for their upcoming A-Level exam.

Politics teacher Miss Clarke said: “Here at Carr Hill we value the importance of giving students opportunities to meet people working in the industries related to their courses. Meeting an MP gave students an insight into the day to day realities of a career in politics”.

When asked about how to become a politician, Mr Menzies advised them to, “be prepared for setbacks. Becoming an MP may seem impossible on the face of it, but with hard work and determination it is possible.”

Drama Students wow at Weeton Primary School Year 13 Drama Students visited Weeton Primary School recently as part of their Performing Arts qualification.

The performance was a piece of ‘Theatre in Education’ which students had devised as part of their studies to encourage young people to think about healthy eating.

After the performance they recieved feedback and were critqued as part oftheir final assessment.

local community Students raise money for Mosquito Nets Two Sixth Form students have raised enough funds to buy over 25 lifesaving mosquito nets for families living in SubSaharan Africa.

Year 12 students Abigail and Paige decided to help make a real difference to the lives of people living in the third world by hosting a bake sale in school, raising money for the charity Malaria No More. Despite Malaria being preventable and curable, it’s estimated that one million people die annually from the disease, 90% of those cases occurring in Sub-Saharan Africa.

The life-saving mosquito nets cost £2.50 each and Abigail and Paige have already raised enough funds to buy over 25 nets. The students intend to raise further funds via a number of other fundraising activities which will take place later this year. Abigail said: “I feel really happy knowing that we’d done a little bit to help stop people less fortunate than ourselves getting ill.”

Assistant Headteacher Mr Napier said: “Not only have Abigail and Paige helped to make life a little more bearable for people living in countries at high risk of malaria, they have also enhanced their CV’s and future prospects by actively engaging in extra-curricular opportunities made available by the school.”

local New community Recuits for Carr Hill TV We’ve had a really successful first year producing a bi-weekly Carr Hill TV production. It’s a short news bulletin which is produced by the sixth form students to give a snippet of life at Carr Hill. The bulletin is shared via social media platforms You Tube and Facebook.

Going forward we’re looking for new recruits to join the team, so if you have a flare for presenting or producing video media, or you’re a budding journalist looking at gaining experience in news features or editing please get in touch with Mrs Bowie-McLean in The Hub to regisiter your interest.

Picture Perfect for Year 13 Art & Photography Students A culmination of two year’s work

by Year 13 Art and Photography Students has been on show in the Art department in anticipation of a visit from the exam moderator.

The students presented one project which was personally chosen and driven by themselves, resulting is a very diverse selection of work showcasing the wide range of interests and skill of our students, and a 15 hour timed piece in response to criteria set out by the exam board. There was exceptional work from Abigail who even visited an eye hospital to fully understand the complexity and beauty of the human eye.

Dear Parents, Carers and Students,

The end of the academic year is inevitably a busy time in our Sixth Form calendar.

The weeks have been filled with a wide range of preparations as students prepare for their final A-level examinations and complete Diploma portfolios. Colleagues at the school have provided high levels of support for our students as they approached their exams and, I am pleased to report that our students have responded to this support by undertaking their exams with a determination to succeed and a real sense of maturity. This is highly commendable given how stressful this time can be for young people.

Our approach to the end of the academic year also signals the end of an era when we say a fond farewell and good luck to our year 13 students, who will be officially leaving us this summer moving into employment, apprenticeships and university courses. The celebrations have been incredibly special again this year. Students and colleagues have come together to celebrate our students’ successes and achievements during their time at the Sixth Form. Over the course of recent weeks we have held a series of events that I know that both students and staff have taken great pleasure in attending. It is therefore important to acknowledge publicly the efforts of our departing students and their significant contributions to the school during their time with us.

As you read this magazine, you will see the many and varied success stories in this edition. It would be remiss of me not to state my huge appreciation to staff for all of their efforts this academic year. The staff team here at Carr Hill Sixth Form have worked tirelessly to support students, and I’m sure that you will join me in saying a huge thank you for their on-going outstanding efforts and contributions.
