Why do we have expected grades?

Most schools share a ‘target’ or an ‘expected grade’ with students and parents so that they can see how they are doing COMPARED TO THEIR INDIVIDUAL POTENTIAL This allows the school to; Congratulate students who do even better than expected Support students as soon as they start falling behind their potential BUT We need sensible attitude and approach towards ‘expected grades and standards’

Does it matter if we say ‘targets’ or ‘expected grades’ or ‘expected standards’?

How do the standards in Y7 & Y8 relate to the grades in Y9, Y10 & Y11?

Our Y7 and Y8 standards link broadly to GCSE grades If your work is meeting the ‘higher’ milestone in Y7 and you keep making good steady progress you should continue hitting the ‘higher’ milestone in Y8 and

then the milestones for a grade 6 through Y9, Y10 & Y11.

Don’t become ‘fixed’ on one grade Everybody has potential to improve to the next grade

Remember changes to SATs and GCSEs systems mean there will be some slight changes each year

How are the expected grades worked out?

The government ‘collects’ every exam results for every Y11 student in England They compare the GCSE result to the Reading and Maths SATs results for the same student when they were in Y6 five years earlier!

For different SATs results they work out the average GCSE results from Y11

We use the word ‘expected’ because, students who performed to the same level as you in Y6, achieved ‘ON AVERAGE’ this grade at GCSE BUT many students at LSA beat that expected grade!

Will my expected grades be the same in all subjects?

Most students have a similar SATs score in Reading and in Maths e.g. Level 4 in reading and Level 4 in Maths ( 103 and 106 ) therefore they should have the same expected grades for all subjects BUT Some subjects have had better or worse results overall across England.

This will give you a different expected grade for these subjects.

AND Some students have a much stronger Maths SAT or Reading SAT score and have a different expected grade for Maths or for Language based subjects.

How will my expected grades be worked out from my SATs results?

How will I know if I’m meeting my expected grades?

During lessons through the year, teachers will explain the quality of work they are looking for. They might say ‘to meet the milestone for higher you need to …’ or ‘this is a grade 7 question’ Main assessments are marked against the standard milestone / grade milestone Near the end of each term your report will show standards/grades and ‘colours’ Blue indicates an assessment above your expected range Green indicates an assessment within your expected range Purple indicates an assessment below your expected range

What’s the best attitude to have regarding expected grades?

Don’t get fixed on one grade or standard. Don’t say ‘I’m core’ or ‘I’m a 5’.

We would like every student to get the best results they can.

However well you are currently doing, keep trying to improve.

‘Purple’ subjects need a special focus to ensure you work hard and follow advice.

If you are ‘green’, be proud! You are broadly on track! Still look for strategies to improve.

If your work is at the lower end of your range you should have a good chance to improve.

A ‘blue’ for any subject is a fantastic position to be in.

Can you keep this up, do even better and use the same successful strategies in other subjects?
