Law What is Law? ‘The law’ is the group of rules that have developed to make citizens know what their rights and responsibilities are. This is to make sure people can live together safely and peacefully.

Laws tell citizens what behaviour is acceptable, and what is not acceptable.

People talk about ‘the law’ when they talk about all the laws of the country, and also about the people who put them into force. (Thames Valley Police) Law at BRGS To study Law at BRGS you need a genuine interest in the subject and the ability to work hard. Your studies will be supported by Google Classroom. This will allow you access all learning materials from school at home.

The Law Department also arrange trips, visits and guest speakers which in the past have included a barrister discussing their role and a trip to London to visit Parliament and visits to court.

The Future!

Students who have achieved an A’Level in Law choose to study on a variety of courses at university. The popular choice is an LLB (Law Degree) but students have chosen to study everything from Fashion Design, to Teaching, to Theology.

Your choices at A’Level are often dictated by the course you wish to study at university. Law is a well-respected Alevel and is approved by all Russell Group universities.

Why study Law? It is an obvious choice for anyone wanting a career in the legal profession. The study of law improves your powers of reasoning, clarity of thought, and the ability to analyse. It is taught within so many different professions from medicine, to business, to architecture, to teaching, that to have an understanding of our legal system is always an advantage.

The Law Course at BRGS Component One - English Legal System and Sources of Law This module includes the study of topics like the sentencing of adult and youth offenders, how suspects are allowed bail, the role of magistrates, judges and juries and how civil and criminal cases are taken to court. It also considers where our law comes from and how our law is made. Therefore it looks at the power of Parliament to make law and the influence of judges on the law making process.

Components Two and Three - Criminal Law. Contract Law and the Law of Tort This module includes the study of elements of a crime; fatal offences for example, murder and manslaughter; non-fatal offences for example, assault occasioning actual bodily harm and grievous bodily harm and defences. It also includes the key aspects of the law of contract for example, offer and acceptance, misrepresentation, frustration and damages. Study of the Law of Contract would be beneficial for those students considering a career in Business.

Finally, the Law of Tort the study of which includes liability in negligence for injury to people again would be beneficial to those studying from careers from Medicine to Architecture to Plumbing.
