Parents’ evenings are held in the Autumn and Spring terms. You will be able to discuss your child's progress with his/her class teacher. Your child's teacher will be able to tell you about your child's progress and how you can help your child at home.

Letters will be sent out to tell you of the times and dates available for appointments, and classes will each have sheets for you to sign up to your selected time. A formal written report will be sent home near the end of each academic year.

If you become concerned in any way about your child’s education, it is important that you tell us about this. As a first step you should discuss your concerns with your child’s teacher. If you are still concerned after talking with the teacher, you should arrange to meet with the Head. Obviously, as a staff we will do all we can to resolve your concerns and to ensure you are happy with your child’s education.

There may be some occasion when parents wish to complain about matters relating to the curriculum and collective worship which are the responsibility of the governing body and/or Local Education Authority. Special formal arrangements exist for dealing with complaints of this kind. Copies of a leaflet which outlines these arrangements are available from the school, as are copies of the full arrangements themselves. Advice on how to pursue a formal complaint is also available from Schools Section, Education Office, 5 Portland Square, Carlisle.

All the class teachers are glad of “an extra pair of hands” at any time, especially with reading. The head teacher offers a training session to any parent who wishes to listen to children and become a “reading parent”. Parents can also join FOMIS. Please inform the head or class teacher if you would like to become involved.

Friends of Maryport Infant School (FOMIS) FOMIS raise much needed funds for the school. FOMIS are a set of staff members, parents and grandparents who organise fund raising events such as discos and competitions. They are always in need of willing volunteers; so if you feel you can offer help, in any way please see the head teacher.

Online Learning Journal—Tapestry Our school uses an online Learning Journal to help document and assess each child's learning throughout the school. In order to create a complete picture of each child's abilities and interests we actively encourage parents to comment and add information to their child's journal online. When your child joins the school they will be added to Tapestry and you will be given access in order to upload or view observations of your child's progress.

Governors meet each term, with sub-committees meeting in addition to this throughout the year, to discuss matters such as finance, curriculum and children’s issues, premises, health & safety and staffing. A news letter is sent to parents after each full meeting to summarise decisions made.

School Day Arrival at school The school doors are opened at 8.45am and children should not arrive at school before this time. The head teacher is available most mornings to see any parents with concerns.

School Uniform Children are not allowed to wear jewellery in school for obvious reasons – this includes earrings. If a child has pierced ears they will be asked to cover their studs and remove them for PE. Parents will be asked to sign a disclaimer.

The school doors are closed at 9 a.m. and any child arriving after this time will be required to wait with their parent or carer until the rest of the school return from assembly. The registration period closes at 9.15am prompt. If your child arrives at school after this time, without permission, their late arrival will be classed as an unauthorised late.

AS MANY CHILDREN HAVE ANORAKS, WELLINGTONS, PLIMSOLLS AND SHOES OF THE SAME MAKE, THEY SHOULD BE CLEARLY NAMED TO AVOID LOSS.

Parents are welcome to take their child into the classroom in the mornings and this is actively encouraged in the Reception classes. It may not always be possible to see your child’s class teacher in the morning, and so we ask that you make an appointment to see them after school if you have any concerns you wish to discuss with them.

Pupil’s Property The Authority does not accept responsibility for any personal property left on the premises.

End of the Day When school finishes at 3.15 p.m. your child must be collected from the terrace door that leads to their class.

It is very important that the school is aware of who is picking up every child, every day. If there are any changes to arrangements please let the school know as soon as possible.

Playtimes and Lunchtime The school runs a ‘playtime buddy’ scheme where specific children will look out for those who have no-one to play with. During morning playtime there is always a member of staff on duty and we have three midday supervisors who attend to the children’s welfare during the lunch break.

School Uniform School Uniform There is no legal requirement to wear a school uniform, but the school encourages uniform to be worn. A red, blue or green sweatshirt or cardigan with a blue or grey skirt, shorts or long grey or black trousers are worn by children whose parents wish them to be in uniform.

Sweatshirts and cardigans embroidered with the school logo can be ordered from the school.

Every child should have a pair of pumps and a spare pair of trousers or skirt to be kept in school. PE kit is a pair of shorts, pumps and a t-shirt, in any colour the child chooses. PE in Reception is usually once a week, and in KS1 is twice weekly.

PLEASE PROVIDE A SIMPLE DRAWSTRING BAG to hang on your child’s peg for shoes/plimsolls/spare clothes.

School Day School Meals Under a Government policy introduced in September 2014, children in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 will all get a free meal, every day, however Nursery children will still have to pay for their meals at the cost of ??????? per day. Whether your child pays or not we would still like all parents to complete a Free School Meals Form, to show eligibility for Pupil Premium.

Snacks In Reception children are offered a healthy snack and milk for a donation (currently £1 a week). In KS1 children are also offered milk if they wish to take it (currently 50p per week). All children are also offered free fruit each day.

Term Dates

Health and Safety Security All members of staff, including official visitors, are easily recognised by children as they wear ID badges. School doors and fences around the playground are locked during the school day.

To access school while children are learning, all visitors (including parents) must use the main front door and ring the bell to get in.

Driving to school For safety reasons we do not allow cars to be driven up the school drive in order to drop off or collect children. This is in order to safe guard any children and adults who are walking to and from school. We would also remind parents that it is against the law to park on the yellow zigzags at the school gates. this is for your safety and the safety of all the children.

Health and Safety Medicines If at any time your child requires medicine during the school day then please see you child’s teacher. All medicines must be in original packaging and if the medicine has been prescribed it must show the child’s name and correct dates. If your child has asthma then their inhaler or nebuliser can be kept in school providing the school also has an asthma card signed by your GP. Children must be able to use their inhaler independently wherever possible.

Accidents to children All staff attend first aid training which is regularly refreshed. If your child has had a minor injury during school time, we will send them home with a ‘pink slip’ to inform you of the care that they required in case we don’t manage to pass the information on in person. If necessary parents will be contacted at the time of the incident.

Some parents wrongly assume that if a child is injured at school, the County Council is held responsible regardless of the circumstances, and that its insurance will automatically apply.

School Events Children take part in many activities and visits, but there are some annual events that include parents to look out for in newsletters: Children attend church for Harvest Festival, Christmas and Easter.

In December, children put on a Christmas performance Mother’s day and Father’s day are celebrated in school, with one relative per child invited to join in.

Parents evenings take place in both the autumn and spring term.

Sports day, in June, takes place on our school field.

This is not so – The County Council’s responsibility is strictly limited to cases where there was negligence by them – or their staff.

Accidents can happen in school, on the sports field, or during school visits, when the County Council or its staff are in no way at fault and are therefore not responsible. The provision of personal accident insurance is considered to be the responsibility of parents.

Maryport Munchkins 2 Year Olds

Since September 2015 there has been provision for two year old children at Maryport Infants School. There are eight places available.

Two year olds will be offered provision during term time only.

Only afternoon sessions will be available- Monday to Friday 12.15pm – 3.15pm.

Charging Fee Paying 2 year old places: Maryport Munchkins also offers paid places for children accessing the 2 year old provision. Attendance must be booked and paid for in advance. Each session costs £10.

Free Childcare Entitlement- 2 year olds The ‘free nursery entitlement’ is available to any child the term following their second birthday and who meets the criteria of eligibility . 2 year olds are offered 15 hours a week across 39 weeks of the year.

Families are encouraged to continue their child’s education at Maryport Infant School from 2 years through to 7 years.

Other Information Contact Information ANY change of address should be notified to school so that the eventual transfer of the child and his/her documents can be as smooth as possible.

The school offers a text messaging service to parents to update them about future events or school closures. Please make sure we have your current mobile phone number if you wish to be contacted.

Copies of relevant documents Curriculum programmes of study, class timetable, your own child’s personal records, and other relevant documents are available in school for you to see. Please ask the Headteacher.

The Governors wish to see the Curriculum enriched as far as possible for the benefit of all pupils. They recognise that whatever public funds are made available they will never be sufficient to fund all desirable activities at the required level.

These sessions run from 1:30pm—2:45pm. Parents / Grandparents stay with their child and explore the provision and join in with games and snack time.

They, therefore reserve the right to: Charge parents for activities offered as an optional extra wholly or mainly outside school hours.

Reclaim from parents the cost of wilful breakages, damage and loss of school property.

Charge parents at cost, or in kin, for materials if parents have agreed in advance to own a finished product.

Seek voluntary contributions from parents to fund special activities either within or outside school hours and to provide incidentals relating to those activities.

It may be that an activity cannot be funded without voluntary contribution and the activity might not take place if sufficient money is not contributed There is no obligation for parents to contribute and pupils will not be treated differently according to whether or not their parents have made any contribution in response to the request.

Attendance Attendances The school is proactive in encouraging good attendance and the school’s attendance policy recognises that regular attendance at school is very important during this Key Stage of your child’s education.

Parents and carers are responsible for ensuring that children attend school regularly, punctually, properly equipped and in fit condition to learn.

If a child is prevented for any reason from attending, or is going to be late, parents are requested to call the school by 9.15am on the same day – by phone call or message, and follow this up in writing on the child’s return. If the school does not hear from the parent/carer of absent children by 9.15am, the school will contact the parent/carer wherever possible to ascertain the reason for the child’s absence.

Head teachers may not grant any leave of absence during term time unless there are ‘exceptional’ circumstances. Any application for leave of absence will need to be considered on an individual basis, but leave of absence will not be granted for the following reasons: 

Absences Notification of absences If your child is prevented for any reason from attending school, or is going to be late, we ask parents to call the school by 9.15am on the same day—by phone call or message and follow up in writing the reason for absence on the child’s return. If we do not hear from you by 9.15am we will contact you to ascertain the reason for your child’s absence.

Dental and medical appointments If you make these appointments privately, it would be appreciated if you tried to ensure that they are in the school holidays or as late in the day as possible in order to avoid interruption to school work.

If your child has an appointment during the school session please collect him/her from the class teacher. Please sign your child out of school in the book outside the Head’s office.

Standard Assessment Tests for Year 2 children are held during May and school cannot authorise absence for holidays for Year 2 children at this time.
