Welcome to Year 3! I hope you all had a lovely summer and I look forward to working with you and your child to ensure we have a happy and successful year. Curriculum this half-term Our main theme for the first half-term will be: ‘The Giraffe, the Pelly and me.’ English will be linked to our theme and a lot of our work will be focussed around the book, written by Roald Dahl. We will mainly focus on writing fables, poetry and recounts, including journalistic writing. In Maths we will be working on our understanding of place value, calculations and geometry. In R.E we will be learning about what it means to be called by God. We will also have two R.E related mini-themes this half-term: Our School Values and Harvest. Our Science topic will be ‘Light and Shadows’, where we will explore light sources and experiment with the formation of shadows. More details about our curriculum can be found on the Giraffes’ class page on the school website. The children are bound to have a wonderful time with Mrs Firth, learning about coding in their Computing lessons. Support in class In class we are lucky enough to have support from Ms Smith and Mrs Webb at various times throughout the day.
P.E Our P.E sessions will be on Wednesdays and Fridays. One session each week will be taught by a specialist coach. Please ensure children have their P.E kit in for all P.E sessions. Parents must provide a note / speak to school if their child is unable to do P.E, otherwise children will be expected to join in. Please provide children with plasters if they are unable to remove earrings.
Homework Children will be given spellings and times tables to learn each week, plus reading (this can be any text of their choice). Children will be set an ‘unhomework’ project each half term linked to our theme. Specific guidelines will be given with each project.
Reading Children will have a 30 minute English Workshop each day and will have at least one guided reading session with the class teacher each week. Your child will have a reading book which they are responsible for taking home each night and changing when they need to. Children will also have a library book which can be changed during English Workshop times. Please try to encourage your child to read at home at least 3 times each week and ensure they have their reading book each day. It is very important that children have their reading record in school each day so that you are kept informed of your child’s progress.
School Website Our class webpage will be regularly updated throughout each half term so you can see all the exciting things your child has been learning.
If you have any concerns about your child’s time at school, please make an appointment to discuss this as soon as possible. Many thanks for your support, Mr Dawe, Mrs Webb and Ms Smith
