How to support your child’s learning at home Please ensure your child brings their reading book every day. It is also still important that your child is listened to regularly at home. So that we can monitor who is reading, please ensure there are at least three entries in the ‘Reading Record’, each week.

The expectation for a Year 5 pupil is that they should know all of their times-tables (2x-12x), including decimals – multiplication and division, by the end of the academic year. Please ensure your child practises these for at least 15 minutes per day.

For additional advice about how you can support your child further at home, please contact your child’s class teacher, who will be happy to help.

Make sure you know your targets and are constantly striving to achieve them.

Homework Year 5 children are given homework every Friday to be handed in by the following Wednesday. This will be recorded in their home school journals.

It must be completed to an acceptable standard, which means that it must be at least as good as the work children produce in class. Written tasks must be completed in blue pen.

There will usually be a maths task, spellings to learn and an English or Creative Curriculum activity.

Mr Heseldon runs a drop in homework club on Monday and Tuesday lunchtimes for children who would like some help with their work.

Alternatively, any child who is struggling with their homework can see their class teacher or teaching assistant at break or lunchtime on a Monday or Tuesday.

We have super new journals full of helpful tips to support work at home. Please ensure that journals are signed and handed in each week.

Curriculum Overview Year 5 Autumn Term 1 Miss Shaw, Mrs Mansell, Miss Briggs

English: To begin the new school year, we will be focusing on poems with figurative language. During this unit, we will explore a range of figurative language techniques, assess the effectiveness of given poems and write our own poems. Later, we will be reading the Roald Dahl book ‘Danny the Champion of the World’. During this topic, we will be using our inference skills to explore key themes and issues in the book.

Creative Curriculum: Me, My Rights and I. During the topic of ‘Me, My Rights and I,’ we will be gaining an understanding of the rights of a child, creating a class mission statement and setting personal targets for the children to achieve. In addition to this, we will be looking at personal attributes that will help us be ‘future smart’. Children will develop their reasoning skills, to explain why a chosen attribute is the most important to possess.

UK

We will be developing our locational knowledge of the immediate area and around the world and combining this with Human and Physical features by understanding economic activity and trade links.

As well as our developing our Geography knowledge (see above) we will gain an insight into where our food and textiles come from around the world. We will consider the links needs to trade with other countries, through costing and negotiations. We will also begin to grasp an awareness of how the cost an item (e.g. a banana) has been given.

In Maths, the children will be consolidating their knowledge of place value using decimals and negative numbers.

Calculation skills will also be developed, where they will be applying their knowledge in the context of money and measures.

Science:

Children will investigate the human life cycle, looking at changes at each growth stages and plotting this onto a timeline. We will investigate ‘Living things and their habitats’ by observing life cycles and, which will be ongoing. During this topic we will describe the differences in the life cycles of a mammal, an amphibian, an insect and a bird and be able to describe the life process of reproduction in some plants and animals.

The children will experience Art lessons with a skilled artist, enhancing their techniques in drawing and sketching.

Similarly, a skilled music teacher will focus on the notation of music, in order to develop a performance.

Children will continue to discuss and practice how to stay safe, whilst using ICT. We will be exploring our digital footprint and begin to understand the rules of copyright.
