Extra-curricular Clubs Throughout the year, different members of staff will run a range of lunch time and after school clubs for your child to attend. The clubs change regularly so that we can cater for a variety of ages and interests. Information about clubs will be sent out via letters and will be shown on the Newsletter each week.
Thematic Learning We will learn through many different themes this year. This thematic approach helps us to link our learning across many subjects. Some of our themes will be whole school themes and some are just for our class. Information about our themes is on our class pages of the website.
Curriculum Information Reading In Year 5 we are still learning to read, even though we may be able to read the words easily. We now focus on comprehension of texts and explaining our understanding in a clear way. It is still important to read every day. In class, we will do Shared (whole class) and Guided (group) reading to learn new skills. We should try to do some reading at home – just 5 minutes per day can make a big difference. We use colour bands to make sure books are matched to ability – see our website for details. Every child has a BUG CLUB login and can access hundreds of interactive books online. We also have home reading books and library books for children to enjoy at home. Homework We may sometimes need to do homework to prepare us for a new topic or to consolidate our skills/knowledge. This can be a short piece of homework or an extended project to be done over a period of weeks. It is important that homework is completed on time as it is set to link with our learning in class. Every child has a SUMDOG login to access interactive maths games online. Your child may also have an IDL login. P.E. In Year 5 we attend swimming lessons at Nye Bevan pool every Friday and need swimming costume/trunks, towel and swimming cap. We also have a P.E. lesson in school (every Wednesday) and need a full P.E. kit (Blue shorts, blue t-shirt and trainers/pumps).
Breakfast Club is open 8am-8.40am Complete a registration form if you would like your child to attend After-school Club is open from 3.15-5.45pm Complete a registration form if you would like your child to attend
Assessments Throughout the year we will have our learning assessed in different ways so that our teachers can plan lessons that meet our needs and help us to reach our goals. Our teachers will assess us through the work we do every day and sometimes we may be given short tests. We will develop our test strategies to prepare us for Year 6 and high school.
