Class 3 Curriculum Forecast Autumn Term 2017 English – This term Class 3 will be reading and writing stories with fantasy settings, Fairy Tales and looking closely at Classical Poetry. With these units, the children will have the opportunity to develop their performance skills through drama which will help develop their writing skills. Class 3 will also be looking at newspaper articles and producing a film script. We are having a big push on spellings, punctuation and grammar (SPaG) and this will be taught alongside topics but also as a discrete session. Spelling tests will be on Fridays and will consist of six chosen words to go with their weekly objective. As part of The National Curriculum, the DfE has published a list of spellings for Year 3/4 (see attached) and it is expected for each child to be able to spell those words by the end of Year 4. I will test these termly. Our class novel: Atticus Claw by Jennifer Gray links to our topic this term. Within this book, the children will look at how the author tells a story. Guided reading will take place every afternoon. This is where the children will have the opportunity to discuss a book in detail and to show their understanding of the text by completing fun and engaging challenges. It is important to develop a love of reading as this will help with other areas of the curriculum too. I am very happy to announce that Reading Champions will continue this term after a very successful year. In order to achieve a star, the child must read the whole book (suitable for their ability) and to answer a couple of questions. The three stages: Bronze: 10 books (dip from Mrs Ellis’ dip box) Silver: 20 books: (A treat with Mrs. Ellis) Gold: 30 books (An extra playtime) Maths – This term Class 3 will be looking at number, place value, rounding, ordering and moving onto formal methods of calculation. Later on in the term, Class 3 will be focusing on shape and measure. It is vital that the children are regularly practising their times tables. This will give the children more confidence in their ability and to help speed up answering the question. By the end of Year 4, it is expected that all pupils can recall multiplication and division facts for multiplication tables up to 12x12. Science - Class 3 will be learning about Electricity and Animal Nutrition. The children will learn the basic knowledge relating to this area and will conduct their own scientific investigation in small groups. The focus this term is to work practically and to draw conclusions from the investigations. Computing - This term Class 3 will be creating movies. A green wall will be set up and after editing, the children will be able to choose different scenes. The children will also be programming their own game. They will also understand the importance of E-Safety.
