Welcome to St Peter’s Catholic Primary School The information in this prospectus is primarily for parents who may wish to register their children at our school and for guidance to new parents.

No prospectus can give a clear and complete picture of the school, its ethos, activities or learning environment and we, therefore, extend a warm invitation to visit the school at your convenience, by appointment with the Headteacher.

Introduction St Peter’s is a Voluntary Aided Catholic Primary School. As a Catholic school the values of the Gospel and teachings of Jesus are at the heart of our approach to all aspects of school life. As members of the Catholic community we believe that every child is precious and deserves the best possible education; an education which allows the child to reach beyond expectation and one that promotes development of the whole person.

7. Children who are members of other faiths. Evidence of membership of the faith provided by a priest, minister or religious leader of a designated place of worship will be required.

FUNDING VOLUNTARY AIDED SCHOOLS Being a Voluntary Aided School brings an element of freedom to us as a school regarding admissions and governance. With this freedom comes a cost. We have to provide 10% towards the cost of School Building Repairs and Improvements. Half of this sum has to be raised by the schools and half is provided from the Catholic parishes of the Diocese. The mutually supportive Diocesan School Building Fund enables our school to access funds as needed and acts rather like an insurance scheme.

The Curriculum By law schools are responsible for providing a broad and balanced curriculum which:

“Promotes the spiritual, moral, cultural, mental and physical development of pupils”; Our school needs to raise approximately £4000 annually towards this building fund. We endeavor to raise this money by voluntary parental contributions.

You can help by agreeing to make a regular voluntary contribution by using a standard order and gift aid forms, which we will provide. Alternatively, you can make a one off payment of £20 annually with gift aid per child. A contribution of this amount is required for each child in order for us to reach our target figures.

At St Peter’s, the teachers deliver the Foundation Curriculum in Reception and the National Curriculum in Years 1 to 6, to meet the statutory requirements in core subjects of RE, English, Maths, Science and I.C.T. and the foundation subjects of History, Geography, Music, Art, Design Technology, Modern Foreign Language and Physical Education.

However, education is wider than this and we aim to provide more than a purely academic curriculum.

The Early years learning concentrates on 7 areas split between prime and specific areas of learning. The prime areas of learning are: Communication and language; Physical development; Personal, Social and Emotional Development; Literacy; Mathematics; Understanding the world; Expressive arts and design. Teaching is often done through play.

Modern and traditional teaching methods are used and we strive to ensure that children’s activities are interesting, stimulating and enjoyable, as well as being relevant to the needs of the individual child.

Learning outside the classroom Experiences of learning outside of the classroom are greatly valued at St Peter’s. Your child will have many opportunities to use Squirrel Wood to explore a whole range of projects from bird watching and shelter building to prayer and reflection time.

EXTENDED DAY CARE

Quality before and after school care is a service which is provided through St Peter’s Catholic Primary School.

The Breakfast Club and St Peter’s Ark After School Club provide wraparound care from 7.45am until 6pm.

These sessions are booked in advance each half term (although additional sessions can be booked weekly) at a competitive charge. Admission forms for the clubs can be accessed via the school office and website.

Educational Visits/Visitors An integral part of our planning and approach to the curriculum is to provide opportunities for our children to make educational visits out of school and invite visitors with expertise into school to talk and work with children. On these occasions it is often necessary to ask parents for a voluntary contribution towards the costs. Any parent who finds it difficult to make a voluntary contribution should consult with the Headteacher prior to the visit.

We do have a school uniform so that everyone can see that your child belongs to St Peter’s Catholic Primary School. We recommend the following school wear and have included some pictures that represent an acceptable standard of uniform.

Jewellery & Makeup Please do not let children wear jewelry. If children have pierced ears, please ensure they wear sleepers/studs only. It is extremely dangerous for them to wear hoops or dangling earrings for school. For PE children need to be able to remove their own earrings.

No Nail Polish/Varnish or any other form of make up should be worn at any time.

EXTRA CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES The school places a high value on the involvement in activities outside the school day.

We are committed to the wider curriculum through our many clubs and activities in Sport, Music, Drama, Art and Chess. All children are encouraged to develop their self-confidence through the Christmas and Easter drama productions.

Peripatetic teachers visit school and all children are given the opportunity to play a string, woodwind or brass instrument. Instruments are loaned to pupils and a small charge is made for tuition. A teacher of French provides French lessons for children during the lunch hour break and after school for a small charge.

THE TEACHING OF RELIGIOUS EDUCATION

The Way, the Truth and the Life religious education program is used throughout the school and the time spent on this area of the curriculum varies from 2 to 2.5 hours.

Each child takes part in a daily act of worship (5 – 10 minutes) and formal prayers are used to open and close the school daily sessions. Sacramental Preparation for Reconciliation, Holy Communion and Confirmation is undertaken by the catechists of St Peter’s and St Joseph’s parishes.

Religious education is further enhanced and given expression through the liturgical life of the church by attendance and active participation in the Mass and the Sacraments through the observance of religious services and festivals.

Religious Education and Prayer & Liturgy Through religious education, pupils study the Catholic tradition and come to an appropriate knowledge and understanding of the different religious dimensions of life. They are given the opportunity to examine their own religious attitudes and to respect the convictions of others.

The Catholic faith perspective is not an added extra, which we teach and offer the children, it is integrated into the whole life of the school and into all the aspects of the curriculum.

Bound together as we are, by the unity of our faith, the children’s education is developed in an atmosphere of caring, sharing and example.

SRE (Sex & Relationships Education) falls within the general framework of Religious Education within the school, and in accordance with the moral and dogmatic teaching of the church. Parents are informed of any special programmes in sex education.

Parents have a legal right to request that their child be withdrawn from lessons in Religious Education or from acts of Collective Worship. This may be done in consultation with the Headteacher.

The Foundation Stage The children at the foundation stage are assessed in all areas of learning at the end of the Reception Year. In order to make accurate assessments the teacher also completes a baseline assessment at the beginning of the year. This assessment is intended to provide immediate information to the classroom teacher as well as a Baseline for measuring the progress of pupils.

The National Curriculum With the introduction of the revised National Curriculum in 2014, from 2016 pupils will no longer be given a National Curriculum level.

Children will be assessed against key developmental steps.

At the end of Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 children will continue to take Standard Assessments Tests (SATS). These tests are marked against the common national scale set out in the National Curriculum.

Throughout the school year your child will be continually assessed to ensure that they are making good progress. The school uses a variety of formal tests in combination with moderated and thorough teacher assessment.

CHILD PROTECTION

School has a responsibility for the welfare of all pupils and has a Child Protection Policy which can be viewed by parents. School has a duty to refer any suspected child abuse to the investigative agencies in the interests of the child.

POLICY ON CARE AND CONTROL

If staff become aware of, or have a need to become involved in, situations where a child may be at risk of hurting themselves or others, or if the behaviour of a child seriously disrupts good order in the school or causes damage to property, staff may need to take steps to intervene physically. In such circumstances staff will follow the school’s policy for dealing with such situations. Any parent wishing to view this policy may do so on request.

Parental Involvement Parents are always welcome in school and are involved in many varied activities. Requests are made throughout the year for parental helpers and meetings are held to explain these activities. If you can spare us some time, however short, to help in school, please do not hesitate to contact us – we would be really pleased to welcome you.

Holidays during term time No child should be taken out of school during term time for a holiday period. Permission to do so is at the discretion of the Headteacher and is only granted in exceptional circumstances. A Holiday Form must be completed before any holiday is booked and permission sought. Any holiday time not sanctioned by the Headteacher will result in unauthorised absences being recorded for the holiday period. Parents who persistently take unauthorised holiday time will be liable to a penalty fine from the Local Authority.

PTFA We have an enthusiastic, lively and very involved PTFA. Besides “fund raising” we have social and educational events.

The Chairperson is Mrs Kirsten Brown, Vice Chairperson is Mrs Abo Elazm and the Treasurer is Mrs Gemma Holderness.

HOME-SCHOOL AGREEMENT A copy of this agreement is available with the prospectus.

It sets out clearly the partnership that is required to fully support your child in school.

Committee meetings are open to all parents, staff and friends of St Peter’s.

Information regarding events is published by the PTFA members through the school website and newsletters which are sent home on a regular basis.

Homework The main focus of home activities at KS1 will be on reading , phonics, writing skills and numeracy, with science and other subjects added as children move up through KS2.

Children should either read to their parents, or listen to their parents reading, for between 10 to 20 minutes a day. Number games and tasks will be set twice a week

At KS2 more substantial activities will be set. In addition children at KS2 will be given homework which requires them to find out information, prepare for oral presentations and undertake written assignments. The precise amount of time set for homework is less important than the value of the tasks. As a guide the following is recommended: Reception Year: Homework is optional. Reading is recommended each evening with a further activity to take 1 hour over the whole week.

Years 1 & 2:

1 hour

Years 3 & 4:

1.5 hours per week.

Years 5 & 6:

1.5 hours per week.

Whilst homework is a valued activity, it is also important that children are given the opportunity to join activities after school such as Brownies, Cubs, Swimming, Dancing, Football etc, Therefore provision is made to allow more that one evening for the completion of homework which takes account of the out of school activities.

As parents we encourage you to: 

Provide a reasonably peaceful, suitable place for doing homework;



Make it clear to your child/children that you value homework, and support the school in explaining how it can help them make progress;



Expect deadlines to be met and check that they are;



Give praise for the completion of homework.

PUPIL PREMIUM FUNDING

The Pupil Premium is funding in addition to the school's budget. Schools are free to decide how to allocate this funding to best support the raising of attainment for the most vulnerable pupils.

In 2014/15 the school received £29 800 in Pupil Premium allocations.

In 2015/16 this will be £21 120 In 2014/15 the pupil premium was used in a variety of ways. These included:  Additional TA support to deliver personalised intervention programmes 

Employing a learning mentor to support vulnerable children and families



1:1 support from a qualified teacher Examples of impact in 2014/15 include:  Identified pupils made at least expected progress with some exceeding their school targets.  Improved emotional and well being of identified pupils.

The school plans to continue with these strategies during 2015/16

Additional support for pupils identified with Special Educational Needs Provision is made to assist pupils with special educational needs.

Use is made of structured learning materials and apparatus. Every effort is made to develop the skills and abilities of each child to their fullest potential. Each child with special needs has an Support Plan which is monitored and reviewed each term.

We at St Peter’s School exercise our function under Part III of the 1993 Education Act and have regard to the provisions of the Code of Practice 2014 for the identification and assessment of Special Educational Needs Pupils.

The full policy for Special Educational Needs is available in school and on the school website alongside our Local Offer. This provides parents with detailed information . Parents are encouraged to make an appointment to see their child’s class teacher or SENCO (Mrs Hazeldine) if they have any concerns regarding their child’s progress or to discuss supporting any additional needs they may have.

CHILDREN WHO HAVE AN EDUCATION, HEALTH AND CARE PLAN ARE PROVIDED WITH SPECIALIST HELP BY ADDITIONAL STAFF WITH EXPERTISE IN THE SPECIFIC SPECIAL NEED Admission of pupils with disabilities is carried out in consultation with the Local Authority who will provide special equipment and alterations required for easy access to the curriculum. All pupils regardless of disability are treated equally and the full curriculum entitlement is made available to children with disabilities. Advice is sought from the Local Authority to ensure all working in the school are suitably trained to offer this entitlement. A Multi –Sensory Room has been set up to enable inclusion for all children at school.

Classrooms in the infants have been updated to offer good acoustic conditions for hearing impaired. Through consultation with our building surveyor all new building work in school provides suitable updates to allow access for the disabled.

SCHOOL MILK All infant children may have milk at the morning break each day. The cost is £9.00 per term payable in advance. Milk is free to under fives and those receiving income support.

School Meals The school has its own kitchen and all meals are cooked on the premises. At present your child is entitled to a free school meal (KS1) , as part of the Government’s universal free school meal initiative, which provides a free school meal for all pupils in KS1.

For KS2 children school meals must be paid for in advance, usually on Mondays. For pupils who prefer to bring sandwiches, provision is made in Year 1 classroom and the hall following the school meals.

Mrs Roberts cooks excellent meals for us. The children collect a tray and are encouraged to make a choice for their dinner. There are always at least 2 choices for each part of their lunch. We think that lunchtimes are a very important school occasion where the children can sit with their friends and enjoy a “family” atmosphere. It is important that you give at least half a terms notice if you want to change from school meals.

Your child may choose to bring a packed lunch, rather than have school meals. Could you please observe the following to save any problems: Packed lunch boxes to be named on the outside.

All drinks need to be in a cardboard carton, supplied with a straw and stored in the packed plastic lunch box – no flasks, cans or fizzy drinks please.

Dinner money is collected in advance on the first school day of each week.

Please place monies in a sealed, labeled envelope and, if you wish to pay by cheque, please make the cheque payable to “Lancashire County Council”.

School absence MEDICINES

If your child does need to have prescribed medicines during the school day, A support assistant will look after it. An adult should take it to the school office and complete the medicine form at 8.55am. The instructions for use should be clearly marked on the bottle.

Only medicines prescribed by a doctor should be brought to school – no commercially bought medicines please.

LOST PROPERTY This is kept to a minimum if all clothing is marked with the child’s name. A lost property box is located in the school office.

LOST OR DAMAGED The school will ask parents to make a contribution to cover all or part of the costs of lost books or equipment or items damaged through pupils’ carelessness.

School is legally bound to report unauthorised absences. Therefore, it is important that if your child needs to be absent from school at any time you: 

Telephone the school on the first morning of absence between 8.30am and 8.45am. and



You send a letter of explanation for the absence on your child’s first day back at school.

For dental and medical appointments it is necessary to send in the appointment card in advance of the appointment. Any child who needs to leave school for an appointment must be collected from school by an adult.

Medical emergency When we suspect illness or there is an emergency, parents are contacted usually by telephone.

In case of emergency it is absolutely essential that we have a contact number. Hospitals are reluctant to treat children if a parent is not present.

School medical checks Dental inspections are carried out from time to time, but parents are advised to make private arrangements if they think it necessary.

The health visitor and/or school nurse will carry out regular hygiene inspections, check a child’s vision. They contact parents if there are any problems.

During their early years in school a check will be made on your child’s hearing by an audiologist. The medical officer will examine your child as a matter of routine but it will not be without your consent or presence.

Communication with parents Please check the website regularly. Your class teacher will post information and photographs reflecting events and learning of the week. We have a school app which can be downloaded from your app store for free. (Shudio and then choose St Peter’s Lytham). You can also follow us on twitter @stpeterslytham.

All forthcoming events are published on the school calendar on the website.

A Newsletter is published each week to give details of forthcoming events and important school information.

St Peter’s has an open-door policy and we always willing to meet to discuss your child’s progress or any concerns.
