The Principal's Message It is that time of year again when we send out our annual newsletter and celebrate the achievements and talents of our fantastic students.

Our Year 11 and Year 13 students have taken their exams and now have a nervous few weeks to wait for their results. Having seen both year groups preparing and working towards the exams, I am convinced they will do well; they certainly deserve to do so!!

Insects Swarm The Courtyard At The Samworth Church Academy

Students Travel Back To The Seventeenth Century During A Visit To Djanogly Theatre At the beginning of October 2016, a group of intrepid time travellers ventured back to the seventeenth century to visit a macabre Porter at the Djanogly Theatre in Nottingham.

We witnessed the Messenger tempt Macbeth into killing King Duncan, deliver the news of Macduff’s family’s death and discover the disembodied head of the tyrannical king (which we discovered to be a cabbage bathed in fake blood!).

Meet The Head Boy and Head Girl 2017 - 2018

A ‘swarm’ of ceramic insects has been installed in the courtyard at The Samworth Church Academy, brightening up the space with a range of creatures scuttling up the wall. Last year’s Year 7 students produced the insects using clay and glazes in the summer.

Sixth Form Students On Hand To Lead An Art Workshop At Wynndale Primary School On Thursday 13th October Miss Richmond led an Arts workshop at Wynndale Primary School for Years 1 and 2 students. They were assisted by nine Year 12 Art students, in producing African masks, designed to fit in with a topic students are currently studying.

Academy Students Take To The Stage At Mansfield Palace Theatre The evening of 18th October 2016 saw our GCSE Drama students take to the stage at Mansfield Palace Theatre for the School's Shakespeare Festival. The evening comprised of four performances from a variety of local schools and our students were a credit to the Academy.

The SSF director for the Midlands commended our students for their professionalism and focus. The evening was a great success and yet another opportunity for our students to showcase their talent.

Students Invited To Work Alongside Sculptor, Philip Cox Earlier this year, students were selected for their threedimensional talents and offered the opportunity to work alongside local artist Philip Cox one afternoon after school.

Academy Captains and Prefects Enjoy A Weekend in Derbyshire

..."One of the most enjoyable things is the challenge of turning a sheet of cardboard into something three dimensional"...

Students worked alongside the sculptor to create a range of sculptures in Cox’s signature medium of cardboard.

Miss Richmond and Mrs Fletcher couldn’t resist getting involved too!

Some fantastic work was produced and Philip Cox even invited the students to exhibit their creations alongside a retrospective of his work that was shown in Mansfield in early 2017.

Everest Challenge In The North Yorkshire Dales

Captains and Prefects enjoyed a weekend of adventure in Derbyshire, planning Rounds Square projects for the forthcoming academic year whilst also focusing on how to embed Christian Ethos throughout the Academy, ensuring our students learn to live with the Academy values at the core of all their actions.

Samworth Cadets A Credit To Themselves

There are many ways to conquer the height of Everest; not all of them involve taking on just the one. Samworth Church Academy students began their challenge by climbing 1,715m towards the aggregated total equivalent to the top of Mount Everest (8848m). They climbed 3 Mountains in the North Yorkshire Dales in challenging weather conditions with a fantastic team spirit and a “can do” attitude. Curtis Bagshaw, one of the students who took on the challenge, has already raised over £300 in sponsorship money for his chosen charity “RP Fighting Blindness”. The students have a further three weekends to complete the challenge and a further 7 mountains to climb in the Lake District, Wales and Scotland.

Samworth Church Academy Cadets attended the Forest match on Saturday 5th November 2016 to assist with the Poppy Appeal. They were a credit to themselves and the Academy.

The total collection by the Army, Sea and Air Cadets was a magnificent £1,091.46. Well done to all.

Dance Students Perform at St Alban's Church Year 9 students have been working hard on a site dance project. Students created a spooky themed dance which they costumed themselves and performed at Saint Alban’s Church.

Our very own Sixth form student, Hannah Thickett, was the guest photographer and took some brilliant pictures. Well Done all!

learnt and took part in an Ariel workshop.

We strive to ensure that the meals offered in the restaurant are both tasty and healthy. All food is cooked on site and the menu is selected to ensure there are a variety of healthy options.

Unfortunately we are suffering from the same pressure on food prices as you will be at home. The only way we can maintain the quality of our service is to build these extra costs into our prices. With regret, we will be increasing the price of a meal deal from £2.20 to £2.40 from September 2017.

Teachers Gunged At The Academy The Academy put together multiple events this year that many of the students took part in, spectated and contributed to.

These events include ‘gunging’ three teachers, a non-uniform day in which students wore an item of clothing corresponding to the colours of their schools, cake sales and impersonation challenges.

High School Musical Production A Huge Success

This raised a grand total of £1525.84 for the Children in Need fund.

Wednesday 7th December saw the final evening of our production of 'High School Musical'. The production involved over 130 students performing, dancing, musicians, technical crew, front of house, filming, publicity, refreshments and face painting.

The show was a sell out every night and our students were all shining examples of commitment, passion and talent. For the Year 11 and 13 students this event marked their final production here at the Academy which made closing night a special and emotional event.

The Performing Arts team are immensely proud and grateful for the support and commitment of our young people, staff and community.

Students Go Head To Head In Round Square Bake Off Twelve Students from two Round Square schools went head to head to produce some amazing Christmas treats in a Bake Off during December.

Students were up against the clock and only had one hour to beat, whip, whisk, blend, bake and decorate their delicious desserts. The winners of the Year 7 chocolate orange cup cakes went to Kieran and Caitlyn from Abbotsholme. Our Year 7 students, Zak Baldry and Arabella Radford, were equally as proud of their yummy cakes. Year 8 students, Ben and Jake, from Abbotsholme came a close second to our own Academy winners Owen Hickman and Alysha Barker with their exquisite biscuits. The grand Year 9 Yule Log finale saw Chloe and Nicole form Abbotsholme as the victorious winners. However, Billie Angel-Dunning and Jessica Hudson were only just pipped at the post. All left happy, carrying bundles of gourmet delights home to share with their families.

Year 8 Students Visit Warner Studios, The Making Of Harry Potter On Monday 5th December, Year 8 Art students visited Warner Studios, The Making of Harry Potter in Leavesdon, Watford. This was a fantastic opportunity for students to observe what goes on behind the scenes when making films like Harry Potter and the hundreds of creative careers that are involved from start to finish from set design, graphics, prosthetics, architecture and many more.

In Year 8 Art lessons, students are working on a project inspired by mythical creatures, researching artists who were involved in the making of the Harry Potter so this was a great opportunity to observe their work first hand, making direct contextual links with their own practice.

Students now have a greater awareness of the huge range of careers available in the creative industries, some having aspirations to pursue a creative career path in the future (1 in 11 jobs in the UK are in the creative industries!).

Global Round Square Membership Presented To The Academy From the 9th – 14th October Head Girl Heather Bacon, Headboy Steven Bridges, Deputy Head Boy Richard Ellis and Deputy Head Girl Eka Dare, Mrs Angela Owen (Round Square Representative) and Principal Mr Barry Found were high up in the Swiss Alps, with fabulous views across snow-topped mountains at Aiglon College, where we were privileged enough to be presented with Round Square Global Membership by His Royal Highness King Constantine.

Dance Group Come 4th In The Great Big Dance Off Our talented ELITE performance group took a unique choreography to the regional finals of The Great Big Dance Off coming 4th out of 45. Well done and keep up the good work!

The conference provided a time for pupils and staff alike to take a moment to consider how we can all contribute to making a difference for the greater good in how we live our lives. In the words of the conference ‘It is the journey that makes us’. Our Student Leadership team came back with lots of ideas they wanted to put into practice to help improve the lives of those in our local community.

Students Practice Navigational Techniques Around Kinder Scout On Saturday 4th of February six Post 16 students spent the day navigating around Kinder Scout as practice for a forthcoming expedition.

The students navigated through snow and deep peat bogs to practice walking on a compass bearing, using land features as handrails, creating mental tick off features, over shoot features and attack points to correctly identify their location in the bleak wilderness.

Kinder Scout is a moorland plateau and National Nature Reserve in the Dark Peak of the Derbyshire Peak District in England. Part of the moor, at 636 metres (2,087 ft) above sea level, is the highest point in the Peak District, the highest point in Derbyshire, and the highest point in the East Midlands.

Year 8 Boys’ Football Team Prove Amazing In The National Cup The Year 8 boys’ football team have been generating some interest around the Academy with their exploits in the National Cup. This competition is like the schools’ version of the FA cup, starting with 674 teams and the boys made it to the last 8, a fantastic achievement.

In a brilliant quarter final the team played against St Bede’s of Redditch. The fixture was hosted by Redditch United FC and was a fantastic advert for school football. St Bede’s were outstanding in the first half but our boys stood up to the challenge. They worked hard, defended well and went in at the break 2-0 up, goals being scored by Clarridge and Clarke. After half time St Bede’s mounted attack after attack but Tom White and the defence held firm until the last ten minutes. St Bede’s deservedly drew level with two well worked goals.

Clarridge then scored a terrific free kick to put Samworth 3-2 up with 2 minutes to go. A sickening last minute equaliser took the game to extra time where St Bede’s quality proved too strong and they came out 5-3 winners.

Students summit to the top of Glyder Fawr

During Everest Challenge 3 in the Snowdonian Mountains students braved the wintry conditions and successfully managed to summit Glyder Fawr. On day 2, students woke to pools of water and wet sleeping bags. Undeterred, they packed their lunches and headed off to tackle Mt Snowdon via the Rangers Path. Donning their waterproof kit to protect them against the wind, rain and hail storms the team persevered, triumphant when they reached the top.

Toasting marshmallows over a log fire was the perfect ending to a very tiring but victorious day.

Sporting Successes Celebrated During Sports Awards Evening 2017

A Level Drama Students Stage Their Final Production A Level Drama students performed their adaptation of Peter and Wendy week commencing Monday 15th May 2017.

The play combined physical theatre and spoken language to create a very mesmerising performance piece. This was the final performance for the students after 7 years of Academy life and showcases their exceptional talent.

Mrs Ashley said how proud she was of these students and what a pleasure it had been to teach them.

Students Market Thorntons Chocolate To A French Market On Friday 24th February, all Year 8 students took part in a Business and French Industry day supported by Young Enterprise and Thornton’s Chocolates as well as volunteers from Nottingham Trent University and a French National who supported with the language skills.

Visitors and staff were blown away by the quality of the presentations, teamwork and creativity shown by our students on the day. Six teams were selected as winners by a team of judges and received a chocolate trophy. All students were rewarded for their efforts with a small sample of their chocolate product.

Students Develop Their Route-Finding Skills In The Peak District Twelve students were out walking on Saturday 4th March 2017 for 7 hours developing their route-finding skills including position fixing, using tick off features, reading map symbols, using features as handrails and contour reading.

The students walked 16 kilometres completing a loop from Baslow through Chatsworth, Rowsley and Endensor. Students worked well as part of a team and now feel ready and prepared for their practice expedition.

Outstanding Performance By Year 7 and 8 Netball Teams Throughout the season our Year 7s and 8s have participated in the local Central Venue League over 4 different tournaments playing against teams in our area. On 28th March 2017 we played in the final leg with both the Year 7s and Year 8s playing with our competitive and supportive Samworth cheer.

Passionate Students Committed To Helping Others On Thursday 16th March 32 students took part in a full day of professional training with Restorative Justice 4 Schools. The students who took part were selected from over 70 applications and all wrote of their passion and commitment to helping others.

The day explored a range of scenarios along with techniques for active listening and signposting problems; the skills developed throughout the day will not only benefit others but will also provide the mentors with valuable skills for life.

Students Gain Valuable Experience From Park Ranger

On 28th and 29th March 2017, Year 7 students attended a trip to The Tropical Butterfly House. Students were able to observe animals, sketch them in their habitats and gain information on where these animals originated.

Students also got first-hand experience from a park ranger who led sessions on ‘Minibeasts’ and ‘Fur, Feather and Scales’. This gave students an opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of the animals and allowed them to handle them to get a grasp on the textures and features which made those creatures unique.

U15 Girls Rugby Team Crowned Winners Huge congratulations to the U15 Girls rugby team who were crowned WINNERS of the RFU National Area 4 Competition on Wednesday 29th March, making them one of the top six teams in the country. The team won all four of their group matches convincingly, only conceding one try and scoring just under 20 tries. They then went on to win their semi-final 4-0 and the final 4-1.

Not only did the girls play an outstanding level of rugby but they also showed great sportsmanship and team work throughout the day.

Students Demonstrate Green Fingers In The New Potting Shed Gardening club students are making use of the new potting shed donated by the Samworth Church Academy Endowment Trust. They have been busy potting cherry tomato plants kindly donated by our students' families. Students were sad to discover that the courgettes died during recent frosty conditions but have planted some new seeds, including runner beans, which will germinate in the new potting shed.

Academy Hosts 2017 Round Square Adventure Conference On 8th June 60 visitors from Round Square schools in the European Region arrived at The Samworth Church Academy for our third Adventure Conference.

The visitors from France, Germany, Denmark, Romania and England were all greeted by our student leadership team of prefects and captains for lunch and a tour of our academy. The delegates all got together in the sports hall for a game of hockey led by Mr Preece and the PE department which was a lot of fun and exhausting.

The delegates then took part in an art activity organised by Miss Richmond where they worked collaboratively on wooden tiles to create a conference picture of the world which can be found in our dining room. After a delicious evening meal of international dishes, delegates danced to the conference concert led by our students and Mr Dilkes. After that it was off to the labs for some “Mad Science� where Mr Robinson got the students to turn copper coloured two pence pieces into gold coins. Students were treated to a tour of Chatsworth House and gardens and after lunch taken to Cholmondeley Castle in Cheshire for a bushcraft adventure , taking students into the wild and giving them real back-to-nature experiences.

Upon return and after a delicious Sunday meal, students attended a disco back at the Academy. The following day, everyone was sad to leave the new friends they had made as they all departed.

Annual Hanging Basket Competition Judged By Mrs Caroline Samworth Samworth Church Academy students recently took part in the annual hanging basket competition. Students were encouraged to create their own distinct baskets which now garnish and add colour to the front of the Academy building. Mrs Caroline Samworth was invited to judge the competition.

Mrs Samworth inspected the baskets and asked each student to describe their basket arrangement and what had inspired them with their basket design. As usual, all students had created wonderful baskets and they were all thanked for their efforts. The quality of baskets made the selection of a winner a difficult decision, but after careful consideration, Lydia Price Killick was chosen as this year’s winner. Lydia, along with the other students, were congratulated and presented with certificates and prizes by Mrs Samworth.
