Welcome to our latest edition of the ‘Communiqué’ from Archbishop Temple School.

A message from the Headteacher Dear Parent/Carer, When George Gershwin said “Summer time and the living is easy”, he obviously didn’t work at Archbishop Temple School, where we’ve been as busy as ever!

This year, Archbishop Temple School sports teams have not only grown in numbers, but have grown in confidence and consequently have brought home even more trophies than last year. We have over 90 teams in school from Year 7 through to Year 11, who collectively, have played over 250 fixtures since September, with more still to come. One of our most successful teams has been the Under 13 Girls’ Football Team who reached the Lancashire Final, Preston District Final, and got to the last 16 in the whole country. Without a doubt, our most successful team this year, and in the history of the school, is our Year 7 Boys’ Football Team. This group of boys have played over 40 fixtures and won the Preston Cup, the Preston League, the Lancashire Cup and were in the National Final at St George's Park, coming third overall. I would like to thank both pupils and staff for all the hours of dedication they’ve shown in the training and coaching, and also say thank you to all the parents for their support along the way.

Our musicians performed throughout the year at different events. About 120 pupils are currently receiving lessons in school. So far 70 ABRSM (practical and theory) and Rock School exams from Grade 1-8 have taken place this academic year with another set of exams taking place in July. Junior Concert Band performed in the National Concert Band final for the second year running this year. Senior Percussion Group are performing at The City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra Centre as part of the Music For Youth National Festival. Jess Gillam, BBC Young Musician Finalist, gave a saxophone masterclass and short recital earlier this year. The World Music Competition in Holland is fast approaching and Senior Concert Band and Senior Percussion are both performing there. It is true to say that the programme for both groups has challenged and stretched our musicians.

Our exam results continue to be a cause of celebration and a source of huge pride. We continue to be at the very top of leagues tables, despite changes to the way in which achievement is measured. At the core of our

work is achievement in all areas, we are a school which values academic excellence.

We work to ensure that our pupils have opportunities to excel as musicians, as sports men and women, but also as caring and informed citizens.

Our motto of ‘Faith, Nurture, Service’, is far more than mere words, but a philosophy, which underpins everything we do.

Our school continues to be incredibly popular within our local community. The past few years have seen applications for one of our 150 places in Year 7 increase significantly.

I’m pleased that our community shows such confidence in our work, despite the wide choice of schools in this area.

We continue to develop close working relationships with local schools. We were designated as a teaching school two years ago and we formed an alliance with over 40 local primary and secondary schools. This has allowed us to run our own teacher training scheme, do most of our in-service training ourselves and develop our own research projects. This year our teaching school work was reviewed by an Ofsted inspector and we were then offered the additional role of a National Support School, with me designated as a National Leader of Education. This is a very significant recognition of the excellence of the work we do at Archbishop Temple School and an accolade of which I am very proud.

This work also allows us to access additional funding. As you will know from the recent election campaign school funding is currently a serious issue. We are in a relatively strong position as we are an oversubscribed school, but we have already seen cuts of around £100k a year. Reforms proposed during the last parliament to the funding formula would see us as lose an additional £70k per year.

UCLAN VISIT

The Year 8 UCLAN visit is a yearly event that enables pupils to take part in workshops that examine several underlying principles of our society – Law and Justice and Human Rights.

All 154 Year 8 pupils set off on double decker buses at 9am with the teachers. We had our introduction lecture in the main lecture theatre which is really large before splitting off into House groups to meander all around the buildings for each one hour workshop. Each workshop seemed to use an important social issue or topic and then we had to look at it from all the viewpoints and decide what we thought was most important. We looked at many types of prejudice – age, gender, race, class, education and wealth.

Unfortunately, we were not able to experience the mock court trial this year which was a big disappointment but we got to eat our packed lunches together with all our friends from the different Houses and overall, I learnt quite a lot about the importance of our Human Rights System in a world that really isn’t fair.

RAINFOREST ROADSHOW VISIT FROM ZOOLAB On the 13th of June 2017 ZooLab’s ‘The Rain Forest Roadshow’ visited Archbishop Temple School to present some of the most fascinating animals found in rainforests around the world.

MEET OUR NEW LIBRARIAN

At the beginning of our summer term we welcomed our new Librarian, Mrs Dearden. She has bags of experience from working in public libraries and is doing a fantastic job overseeing the library.

We wanted to find out more about her passion for books and literacy.

Tell us a bit about your background.

I’m a qualified librarian, I’ve worked in public libraries for 14 years. I was the manager of a library in Coppull, just outside Chorley for 5 years.

I’m hoping to be a Chartered Librarian in the future. I’ve always loved reading and books, my gran was a huge advocate for reading; she took me to my local library when I was a child, and it’s because of her that I’m a Librarian.

Why is it important for children to read?

Non-fiction books are fantastic, my absolute favourite is The Hare with the Amber Eyes by Edmund De Waal. It’s a wonderful read. It will tell you a story about art, Japan, netsuke, Vienna, the list goes on. Its brilliant, go read it!

She ran in aid of the Snowdrop Project, the first charity in the UK to provide long term community support to survivors of human trafficking. The Snowdrop Project is delighted by the amount that has been raised in sponsorship, over £2400 so far, and thanked everyone for their generosity.

“The Snowdrop Project do amazing work and I am keen to raise awareness of their work and raise funds to support them,” said Miss Walsh. “At any one time there are thought to be as many as 13,000 people in the UK caught up in slavery. The Project has had interest from cities across the U.K. and with extra funding the it is looking to expand elsewhere in the near future.”

Miss Walsh started running five years ago and this year was the first time she had completed a full marathon. She has been overwhelmed by everyone's generosity and support.

PERCUSSION PIECE TO PREMIERE AT PRESTON MINSTER Archbishop Temple School’s Music Department is delighted to announce details of their Summer Music Concert in the beautiful surroundings of Preston Minster on Friday 7th July 2017 at 7pm.

MOCK ELECTION It was great to see so many pupils and teachers voting in our mock general elections yesterday. The elections are an essential part of teaching citizenship and democracy in school. As in the real elections voting was not mandatory but even so there was a remarkable turn out at the mock polling stations set up in school. Pupils and staff had the opportunity to cast their vote at break and lunch-time. Votes were counted by Year 10 pupils.

One of our younger voters, Year 7 pupil Joseph Mackley said, "I think that the mock elections in school provide a great opportunity for pupils to experience voting before they become adults."

Year 9 pupil Thomas McCafferty said, “The mock elections show how different children's opinions are to adults. I voted Green.”

The school’s Senior Percussion Ensemble will premiere ‘In Flight’ by Jan Bradley, a piece commissioned for school and half funded by the NST Travel Group. Jan is a member of the highly regarded percussion quartet 4-MALITY and composer of percussion music. The programme will also feature pieces that the school’s Senior Percussion Group and Senior Concert Band will perform on 14th and 15th July 2017 at the internationally renowned World Music Concert in Kerkrade, The Netherlands.

Current Year 10 pupil Susanna Raj will perform two pieces from her Grade 8 Alto Sax Repertoire and ex-pupils Andrew Woolcock and Ben Jarvis will join piano teacher Robert Rainford to play ‘Chieba’, a piece composed and adapted for the school by Jan Bradley. This magical, musical event is sponsored

PRAYERS FOR MANCHESTER 'Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good' Romans 12v21 These are the words from the New Testament that the Reverend Mark Bradford chose as the focus for a voluntary service of prayer and reflection that was held in school in the week following the terrorist attack at Manchester Arena. The attack was felt even more keenly by the school community because a small number of Archbishop Temple students had attended the Arianna Grande concert. The service, attended by both staff and pupils enabled the school family to reflect upon what had happened and to offer prayers and thoughts for all of those affected.

As well as reading from the Letter of St Paul to the Romans, Reverend Mark Bradford encouraged each one of us to reflect upon how we must work to ensure that good triumphs. A very special moment in the service was when each person present was invited to come to the worship table and light a candle in memory of those who had lost their lives or been affected by this incident. As we returned to our classes for the

afternoon, it was with the very moving image of the worship table full of light and hope and the words of St Paul to encourage us. It was also a wonderful reminder that Archbishop Temple is a diverse and harmonious community where we respect each others differences and celebrate our similarities!

MEET THE TEAM At the end of April Mrs Jackson, Mr Baines and Joe Houghton spent a morning interviewing candidates for Head Boy and Head Girl. All nine pupils interviewed were superb. They were all incredibly impressive, well prepared and a credit to the school and their families.

We would like to say ’Congratulations’ to the successful candidates; Susanna Raj (Head Girl), Ronan Paulraj (Head Boy), Richa Job (Deputy Head Girl) and Joseph Fullalove (Deputy Head Boy) who are now the senior pupil team.

They will be happy to help you whenever they can, and to answer any questions you might have.

YEAR 10 BAE SYSTEMS ACADEMY FOR SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE VISIT The Technology department were invited to take forty Year 10 pupils to the recently opened Academy for Skills & Knowledge (ASK) at Samlesbury aerodrome. This new facility will train all the apprentices and graduates in BAE Systems’ military aircraft business as well as providing life-long learning and skills development activities for 13,000 employees for at least the next four decades. The ASK will also act as a collaborative skills-hub for the North West’s engineering and manufacturing sector and offer an exciting learning education centre for school children from five to fourteen years old.

Here’s what some of our pupils said out their experiences.

The BAE systems trip was very informative and the activities that we were involved in were fun and interactive. I especially liked the activity where we had to communicate without speaking from across the room. I think it would benefit others who were looking at apprenticeships, as they offer many opportunities for young people.

engineers. The staff who showed us around were very helpful and I think future trips to BAE systems will benefit children hugely.

Yola Threadgould The BAE visit was a great experience. We got a chance to see what different roles there are at BAE. We learned that it's not just about engineering (around 60% of the jobs) there are lots of different possibilities. I enjoyed the trip very much as I got a taste for a potential career in engineering. We tried out a virtual reality set and see what they do and how they do it. We saw lots of the facilities which showed me how they do what they do. What really made the trip great was participating in activities, so it was an educational but also fun trip.

UNIFORM REMINDER Could you please check your child’s school uniform in preparation for the new school year.

All children in years 7-10 should be wearing a clip-on tie – no other tie is approved school uniform. Girls’ skirts should be just above the knee. Too many girls are wearing skirts that are too short.

SPORTS WEEK The PE department celebrated Sports Week, 26th—30th June 2017, with an array of inspiring, fun sporting activities.

On Monday professional free running and parkour team, the Street Monkeys, spent the day with pupils guiding them through front and back flips in the sports hall. Maddie Murray, Year 9, broke the school record for the high jump earlier this year. She jumped 1.48m, beating the record (set in 2014) by 3cm.

Isaac Mabaya, Year 7, also broke the school record for the 400m. He ran it in 66s beating the current record set in 2007 by a whopping 3 seconds. A future Olympian in the making perhaps!

TOWN SPORTS ATHLETICS 2017

Well done to all the young athletes who competed in the Town Sports Athletics 2017.

Every one gave 100% effort and they were magnificent ambassadors for the school.

WORLD CHAMPION INLINE SKATER VISITS SCHOOL As part of the Sky Sports Living For Sports Programme the school had the opportunity to bring in World Champion and World Number 1 Inline Skater Jenna Downing to work with our students.

Jenna worked with our gifted and Talented students in Year 7 for the full day. She started working on team building activities and looking at her 5 keys to success. After the students found out more about what it took to become a world champion they were able to put on their own skates and learn from the best. All the students had a great time and took lots from the day.

YEAR 7 BOYS’ BASKETBALL FINALS After a fantastic run of results, becoming the county champions, the Year 7 Boys’ Basketball team qualified to play in the English Basketball National Finals at the National Basketball Performance Centre in Manchester. Archbishop Temple School were there to represent Lancashire and teams arrived from all over the country including London, Devon, Kent, Birmingham, Northumbria, Merseyside and Manchester.

It was a festival so there was no overall winner however the boys competed in 4 games against the top sides from across the country, winning three games and losing one ( W43-22, W37-26 W36-22 and L33-35). In addition to this the boys also participated in shooting challenges and in a wheelchair basketball session.

The boys represented the school fantastically well with skill, desire and hard work resulting in three being selected for regional development squads.

TWO ATS PUPILS REACH THE FINAL OF THE NATIONAL FOOTBALL CUP

Lauren Tunstall told us how she felt about getting through to the final.

At the beginning of March we reported that two pupils from Archbishop Temple School, Lauryn Wood and Lauren Tunstall, assisted Lancashire Under-14s Girls Football Team in reaching a sixth consecutive national cup final.

“I was absolutely over the moon when we succeeded in getting through to the National Cup Final,” said Lauren Tunstall. “It’s a great opportunity to sit in the home players dressing room of a massive football club and then to walk out representing your county.”

ATS FOOTBALL SUCCESS AT THE PRESTON FINALS The Under 14 Girls' Football Team and the Year 7 Boys' Football Team competed in the Preston Finals at Deepdale stadium on Saturday 6th May 2017. Both teams were involved in closely contested games against Broughton High School.

First up were the girls, after dominating the first half, and failing to score, they came out for the second half and conceded three quick goals in 10 minutes. The girls responded magnificently well and clawed it back to 2-3 but unfortunately ran out of time.

There were some magnificent performances on the day most notably from Charlotte Lewis, Lauren Tunstall and Menna Shirras.

YEAR 7 GIRLS’ FOOTBALL TEAM IN LANCASHIRE’S TOP FOUR

The Year 7 Girls' football team competed in the Lancashire Final on Friday 24th March 2017. They performed exceptionally well with some great performances against St Augustines Catholic High School, Corpus Chrtsie Catholic High School & Bishop Rawsthorne Church of England Academy.

Unfortunately they did not win but to reach the top four in Lancashire is a great achievement.

YEAR 7 BOYS’ FOOTBALL TEAM REACH THE TOP FOUR IN THE COUNTRY The Year 7 Boys Football Team recently went to the Rotary National Football Finals at St Georges Park after qualifying from a regional group in April. The boys travelled down in the morning and played six group games winning five and narrowly losing one against teams from all around the UK. After the group stage the team progressed through to the semi-finals and came up against a very strong team from North London and unfortunately lost. This was a magnificent achievement from the boys who have surpassed all expectations in reaching the final four in the country! After the competition the boys and their families were fortunate enough to get a tour of St Georges Park and gain an understanding of what it takes to be an

international footballer.
