Monday 26th June 2017 Our News!

A big thank you to William’s parents, from The Plant Place, for all of the donations for our vegetable patch. Thanks also to Mrs Duke and Miss Luberda for all of their help with the weeding. It looks great now and the Ducklings will have lots of fun caring for them over the next few weeks and watching them grow and change.

The children all thoroughly enjoyed sports’ day and all tried their very best. We were so proud of them!

Last week the Ducklings started the first part of their Road Safety programme. They know how to stay safe when walking near a road, holding an adult’s hand and walking on the side furthest away from the kerb.

All of the children had their eye tests in school. Any children that need to have further tests will have been contacted via a letter sent home with the children.

In topic time the children have enjoyed reading Mr Gumpy’s outing and The Train Ride. They have been able to join in with the repetitive patterns of the stories and use these to write their own versions. We have made a train in our reading area and they have enjoyed pretending to travel by train, and imagining what they can see through the window! They have enjoyed learning some new songs about riding on a train too!

In mathematics the children have carried out their own traffic surveys, by watching the traffic passing our school on Arundel Drive. It was quite busy! We have used information about how the different ways we travel to school to help us make pictograms.

Outside the children have been predicting and exploring which vehicle could travel the furthest down a ramp. They then used their footsteps to measure and compare the distance travelled.

OUR LEARNING Transport and Journeys This week we will be reading The Journey Home from Grandpa’s. We will find out about lots of different types of vehicles and how they work. We will use the pattern of this repetitive story to help us write our own journey stories.

We will also find out more factual information about different types of transport, so that we can write our own information or non-fiction books about this topic. We will also look at transport today and compare it with what it was like in the past. We will also be sorting transport according to whether it is used on land, in water or in the air.

We will be continuing with the rest of our road safety programme by looking at safe places to cross, Stop, Look, Listen and crossing the road with an adult safely.

We are using the printing technique with different shapes, objects and paint to create pictures of different forms of transport.

In mathematics we will continue to create our own number stories, both addition and subtraction using the small vehicles to help us. We will also be exploring sharing out the vehicles into different numbers of groups, as well as just halving.

In the investigation area we will be exploring how to make the strongest bridges out of playdough and pasta, using real-life examples of bridges from photographs to help us.

Outside we will use the large construction materials to build boats, trains, and so on!

We will also finish building our boats and investigate whose boat can hold the most passengers without sinking, like My Gumpy’s boat did!

The teachers will be working (one to one) with each pupil over the next few weeks to complete our end of year assessments. As a result we will not be guided reading with your child in school.

Please can you ensure that reading still takes place at home, a little each day? Thank you for your help with this.

REMINDERS and REQUESTS! Head Lice We have had a number of reported cases of head lice. Please check your child’s hair each week.

Often using the chemical treatments alone is not enough to get rid of them. All remaining eggs need to be removed from the hair by combing; otherwise more will simply hatch within a few days. One of the best ways to make sure you get rid of them all is to comb through the hair with lots of conditioner and a ‘Nitty Gritty’ comb. These can be bought cheaply online and in our experience are the best!

Warmer Weather Please can all children bring a water bottle to school each day? Sun hats and sun cream (clearly named) are also needed. Please show your child how to apply this carefully or apply a long lasting cream on them before school on days when it is needed. Thank you.

Coats We will need our waterproof coats/puddle suits when we go out to do our Road Safety.

Extra-Curricular Clubs Please remind your child at the start of each day, if they will be attending an after school club, so that they are aware of what their daily routine will be. Thank you for your help with this.

Hosepipe Does anybody have a spare hosepipe and connector that the Ducklings class could have?

Non-Uniform Day Come in your own clothes on Friday in return for bringing cakes or a bottle or a tombola prize for the summer fair.

Summer Fair Saturday 1st July from 1pm Volunteers are needed to help with this lovely day. The list to sign up to is in the school entrance, even if you can just spend an hour!

TALK HOMEWORK Talk for Mathematics Use you toy cars or other vehicles to create your own addition and subtraction stories. Write them down as a sentence with words or with symbols. For e.g. ten cars in a garage, four drive away. Make a list of longer words with two ‘sound parts’ or syllables, for e.g. sunhat, lunchbox.

Look in your reading books or in books at home for words with two consonants at the start, at the end or both, for e.g. grab, band, stamp.

Design and make a strong bridge out of construction materials, such as Lego or Stickle bricks.

Make an information book about different kinds of transport. Give it a contents page or an index. Write real facts about the vehicles.

Talk about everything! Have fun!
